View Full Version : 100 Reasons Why "The Simpsons" SHOULD Cancel

Are you like me wishing "The Simpsons" to end? Well...with the death of Marcia Wallace (which came 15 years after Phil Hartman's death) I wonder if anyone can give me 100 reasons why "The Simpsons" should cancel. I'll get the ball rollin'...

1-Death of Marcia Wallace and Phil Hartman...they brought many recognizeable characters, but without them the show may or may not go well.

2-Repeated Episodes...There high similarities between "Bart vs. Australia" and "Blame it on Lisa".

3-Price Tag...Sure, this show is a Cash Cow, but the show is starting to get expensive!

they should have stopped it back i the late 90's, they have long since run out of good ideas.

James28

4. The need to make room for brand-new animated shows... Once a long-running scripted show ends as a first-run show, it usually means creating, building and pushing some newer or completely new scripted shows in its place.

5. The show's cast and crew... They need to move on to other projects, especially at the ages the voice cast is at (50 to 70). One of the main voice cast died while "The Simpsons" is still a first run series... That would not be a risk worth taking.

6. The "Floating Timeline"... A character stays the same age indefinitely, especially to the point of becoming "non-existent" or not being born yet at the time of his original introduction. Not a good thing. In any show it would be better if the children and characters did get older, with the children being in their 30s by now (and Lisa would be married).

Highly agree with #6...In one episode where Lisa sees her future, it's 2015 and It's almost two years from 2015 and Lisa Simpson is STILL a whiny 8/9-year-old! Also, there was an episode where Homer Simpson was in a Barbershop Quartet called "The Be Sharps" and 10 years later...Homer is a young adult and in a Grunge Band!

That's ridiculous! The Logical World of Disney makes more sense than "The Simpsons" now! (Disney Logic is a reference that uses something nonsencical, like Donald Duck never wears pants yet puts a towel around his waist after taking a shower or bath...or if Donald Duck isn't wearing clothes, he covers his Naughty Bits...yet NEVER wears pants)!

Back to "The Simpsons"...

7-Animation Domination...In the 90's, there were other Prime-Time Animated Shows like "Fish Police", "Capitol Critters", and "Family Dog"...they all sucked. But then came "The Critic", "Dilbert", and the 1st Run of "Futurama" and "Family Guy" which got bombarded under "The Simpsons".

James28
11-25-2013, 07:22 PM
8. NFL Football overruns: Anytime there is an NFL Football game on FOX in the late afternoon, The Simpsons always has to have its 18-49 demo and viewership spike up to over the 3s and 6+ millions, and in other times, their rating would be in the low-mid 2s and less than/around 5 million

Thats one thing thats bothered me about The Simpsons, consistency. Like mentioned above, Homer is in The B-Sharps, then he's in a grunge band. Homer had no hair in 1990, yet when they flash back to 1990, he has hair. I think it was the one with the creator of Family Guy was in it.

James28

^^Nah, I'd rather have 30 seasons of CSI: Las Vegas, or 20 seasons of Big Bang theory.

9. Number of shows that came and went during its original run: During The Simpsons's original run, around 20 long-running live action shows came and went, such as Beverly Hills 90210, The X-Files, That '70s Show, 24, and House, M.D. Even King of the Hill and MADtv came and went, also. Hundreds more long-running scripted shows on other networks came and went as well, i.e. Home Improvement, Everybody Loves Raymond, NYPD Blue, Friends, Will & Grace, 30 Rock, and The Office.

10-NOT edgy or controversial.

In the 90's, "The Simpsons" had a lot of controversey when it came out. From Bart Simpson's "Underacheiver...and proud of it, Man" to George Bush Sr. saying that families sould be "...more like the Waltons and less like The Simpsons". Bart added this..."Yeah, the Waltons were praying for an end of The Depression too".

I was one of the children who couldn't watch "The Simpsons"...now almost most kids watch "The Simpsons"!

11- Because they'll never top the finale of Season 27!

James28
12-10-2013, 10:52 PM
11. Lack of Ongoing Story Arcs: Usually in a TV series, there are multiple ongoing episode-to-episode story arcs that can begin and end at anytime throughout its original tenure. If that TV series announces it is ending for good, then usually all those story arcs/storylines are closed. For a program that has a tenure this long (26 seasons), The Simpsons consists entirely of standalone episodes with no ongoing story arcs, and it is unknown how closure can be provided when its original tenure ends.

12. People born after The Simpsons's 1889-90 premiere have already reached or are reaching adulthood. Or in some other cases, people born after The Simpsons's 1989-90 premiere not even living to see adulthood, dying of accidents, cancer, etc..

13. Failing to find the perfect number to end its original run on: Is it stated that the so-called "Golden Age" of The Simpsons ended around Season 10 or the year 2000. A film came out in 2007 and after 20 years, the series remains popular. Now in its 25th season, The Simpsons's viewership remains high for FOX, having around 5 to 6 million viewers. But it is true that no scripted TV show's original first-run tenure truly lasts forever. After this season, the gap between The Simpsons and the next-longest-running active scripted TV series on broadcast television will potentially get huge than it already is. The Simpsons's first-run tenure should be finished with the 26th season, and it shouldn't be renewed after that. Too much of one scripted TV series is not much of a good thing while there are several others out there. At least there are enough installments to keep The Simpsons running in syndication for a long time.

14. Two long-running stalwarts of the FOX Network are now gone from the FOX Network: Cops and America's Most Wanted. Cops left the FOX Network and was picked up by Spike TV in 2013, and America's Most Wanted moved to Lifetime in 2011 and ran there for a couple of years before being cancelled again. Now sports coverage has to be broadcast on most Saturdays (when Cops and AMW used to air).

15. Avoid a potential move to another channel for new episodes: Sometimes shows hop from one channel to another for original episodes, like Futurama airing on Comedy Central or American Dad! jumping to TBS. A situation like that is unlikely for The Simpsons, due to the costs and the age of the series.

16. Potential series finale likely to bring a big audience for the network: Other top shows' series finales (like Cheers or Seinfeld or Friends) had bigger-than-usual audiences (over 40+ million). I would estimate that there would be around 20 to 30 million tuning in for The Simpsons's last new episode (which would probably last an hour long, and preceded by a retrospective); Plus, it could also bring big bucks for the network, advertisers would be charged a premium for the airtime.

The Simpsons is just a cash cow at this point, PLEASE put them out of their misery! Havnt laughed at a single episode since circa 2000. Even then, the show should have been canned around 1997-98.

I believe that it was great from 1989-1998.

After that, all the original writers left because they felt the show had run its course.

Also, I didnt realize but some of the episodes from 2004-to maybe 2010 are really funny. I always thought that those seasons were not very good but there were some good episodes.

Also, they could still tap into some storylines instead of recycling them. Ex.

What if The Flanders kids have a girlfriend?
More storylines involving Snowball 2?
Moe's parents
Barney's parents
Why Lisa likes Ichy and Scratchy when she's a Buddhist and vegetarian. Doesnt seem like she would like that show.

Also, I wish they would tone Lisa down. I get her beliefs and all but now she's a borderline nosy, whiny, know it all.

IMO, if they really want to do a second The Simpsons film, I guess it would probably happen somehow, regardless of whether the Simpsons series continues to produce first-run episodes. Such a film will likely take several years to develop and produce, so it'll depend on if any of the six cast members and a few current crew members are willing to do the film (and are still alive by then), and if they can come up with the right plot.

I have been thinking about the "10 Ways for The Simpsons to Improve Itself" article and I have some opinions on four of these suggested "ways".

Regarding the #1 suggestion, the introduction of season-long story arcs that would be a nice idea to make the show better, but I think it's too little too late. IMO, the show should have started doing it around Season 10.

Regarding the #2 suggestion, shortening the season length, As the show ages, I don't think the cast and crew can have the ability to do a full season of 22 episodes in future seasons. 13 is too little, though, how about 18, or maybe 16?

Regarding the #3 suggestion, character development actually sticking, There are so many changes to a character of this show (mostly a permanent-looking change such as a marriage or divorce or the kids moving up a grade) that will probably end up getting reverted in the next episode.

Regarding the #8 suggestion, that the show stop trying so hard to be current, with the show's characters staying the exact same age for over a quarter-century, there's bound to be some anachronisms, such as a popular theme or trend or celebrity at the time of the episode's airing, mainly the episode airing in the early 2000s or after.

MrCleveland
05-05-2015, 09:23 PM
Here's One...

It's no longer Matt Groening's Show. If he had the say-so, he'd cancel The Simpsons around 2002, and without Sam Simon the show went downhill...it showed by the 13th season.

It's now Al Jean's Show and he'll have it on until Cleveland wins a Championship!

I guess I'm one of the few who hasn't seen a huge appreciable drop in quality in the show. It is as good now as it was in the mid to late 90's? No, it's not. But when you compare it to other long running shows and their drops (like Family Guy and American Dad), it's nowhere near as bad.

The one thing that kind of irks me is the amount of guest stars they use now; way too many and it's such an obvious gimmick. And I think really they have to be running out of storylines; the one that posited the reason Homer is slow witted is because he had a crayon stuck in his brain was a real low point for me and showed they were getting a bit desperate.

Overall, though, it's still not terrible. But yeah, best to go out with some standard of quality left. Stuff like Family Guy is just embarrassing at this point.

FOX scheduling sports on Fridays for literally the entire 2024-25 season (college football, then college basketball, then the revived UFL) and still no room being left on FOX for a second animation night gives me a fresh reason why The Simpsons needs to stop airing first-run for good. Family Guy is supposed to be delayed until midseason this year, and it still can't get a date on FOX's January/February 2025 Midseason Schedule. This might be the last straw.

I thought FOX would schedule a second night for their current animated shows in 2024-25 (with either Family Guy or Bob's Burgers anchoring it) because of The Simpsons not being willing to voluntarily end its run and make room for the network's younger animated shows, but I'm disappointed that that isn't happening at all. And now, Family Guy is instead in danger of moving to streaming-only (specifically Hulu), or ending its run altogether before The Simpsons does, and I really don't want either of those scenarios to happen for real.
