View Full Version : People on UM that reminded you of someone else?
Oldschooler81 11-04-2013, 04:47 PM There was a psychologist (Margaret Singer from UC Berkeley) briefly interviewed a few times (like on the Arthur & Nick Karopoulos segment). As a kid I thought she was a total dead ringer for the librarian from Ghostbusters, lol!
Also, the girls from the 1983 Swedish Hitchhikers segment made me think of Bananarama in the "Cruel Summer" music video (which came out just the next year in '84).
SheRaaa 11-04-2013, 05:32 PM LOL I can totally see why you'd think the swedish hitchhikers looked like Bananarama, haha.
I always thought Tammy Leppert resembled a young Heather Locklear.
One of the re-enactors in the Audrey Moate segment looked like/sounded like a southern redneck version of Roseanne Barr.

Yep, I think it's 'cause Bananarama were also hitchhiking with truckers in that video!
Do you mean the grumpy older lady with the shotgun in the trailer? Yeah, if Roseanne lived in the '50s and was a Republican, that's how she would've been. Can you imagine her on her sitcom talking to Becky's boyfriend David that way?
flytrapp 11-04-2013, 05:52 PM LMAO @ Bananarama! TOTALLY think the Swedish Hitchhikers resemble them in that video, especially the photos of the Swedes on/in different trucks. Apparently it was a cruel summer for them, too (I know, insert eye-roll here).
Funny Tammy Leppert was just mentioned - the racist biatch from Big Brother USA 13, Aaryn Gries reminds me of Tammy, except Tammy is much prettier (and probably a nice human being).
The actor (and composite sketch) who plays the murderer in the Blind River Rest stop segment reminds me of actor Eric Allan Kramer...he's not very famous, but if you check out his pictures online you might be able to see what I mean. Heck, it could even be him on UM.
Pat Farmer (aka satanic grandma) reminds me of Angie Dickinson in Dressed To Kill.

Glad people agree with me on that! The real Maria Wahien especially resembled the Bananarama girls. I just checked and Cruel Summer came out in June 1983 in the UK, even if it wasn't a big hit until '84 in the USA. Almost makes you wonder if Marie & Maria had seen the music video or heard the song when it was a brand new hit. If not, it's an eerie coincidence.
You're totally right on the others too! I even kinda thought one of the Blind River killer's composites looked slightly like Doc Brown from Back to the Future.

I believe Cruel Summer became a hit in the USA in 1984 because it was on the Karate Kid soundtrack (and in the movie, obviously). Wanna know something else eerie about Cruel Summer and the Swedish Hitchhikers? Cruel Summer was written mostly by Siobhan Fahey (1/3 Bananarama)....and it came about because Keren Woodward and Sara Dallin (the other two Nanas) went away on a summer vacation/trip/adventure without Siobhan. (Keren and Sara had been BFFs for years before even forming the group). STRANGE that the two Nana chicks took off for an adventure, so did Marie and Maria, and now 30 years later we are discussing the similarities between them.

No kidding, I didn't realize that, but that's cool to learn! :) Alot of 80s songs are so poppy and catchy that you often miss their deeper meanings. When you listen to the lyrics, it's actually about being down and out, bummed that your friends ditched you over the Summer. I bet that's what Sibohan was thinking when she wrote it!
If Marie & Maria survived and made it back to Switzerland, it makes you wonder what they would've had to share about their American trip. From all accounts, they seemed to be having the time of their lives and just tragically ran across a madman like "Loren". :(
flytrapp 11-05-2013, 10:01 PM I agree, it looks like Marie and Maria were having a total blast! Terrible, terrible shame what happened to them....and because of UM segments like this, I've spent my whole life being afraid of hitchhiking, using secluded pay-phones, visiting a convenience store at night, etc. I swear, UM has scared me into some pretty straight-laced behavior LOL. I'm sure I'm not alone in that category!
MegtheEgg86 11-05-2013, 10:09 PM I feel like Jack Brown looked a lot like Elton John:

I can see that, too! Although in the pic posted on the UMwiki page, he looks like David Letterman LOL.

Jack did look alot like 70s/maybe early 80s Elton! The segment said he was 47 when he was killed in January 1984, and I'm sure he hadn't had his birthday yet, so he must've been born in 1936. That picture was probably fairly recent at the time too, the guy was a young looking 47!
Ironically, the guy playing him looked nothing like him! He looked (to use another musician) like if Bruce Hornsby had a receding hairline.
Necco 11-05-2013, 11:44 PM Larry Dickens was the spitting image of Matthew McConnaghey.
