The Spinoff was a television staple from the 70s to the 90s. A well conceived vehicle for an already established character was seen as a drop in the bucket for network executives back in the day. It was a pretty simple formula. You have a popular show, take an ancillary, supporting character, and you build a show around him or her in a different locale. Rhoda. Facts of Life. Frasier. These series all showed that in the right hands a successful supporting character could be a brilliant LEAD character. But alas, becasue of a few ill conceived bombs in recent years (I’m talking to you Law and Order:Los Angeles, Joey, and Caprica), networks are a little gun shy when it comes to spinoffs.

But there were so many times in recent years where a spinoff was warranted, NAY, necessary and the TV execs just dropped the ball. Once a premise is out there, many fans would flock to the show, just to see what this character might do in new situations. Add the spice of family, past failed romances, or work/childhood rivalry, and it’s really not that difficult to conceive of a set of circumstances when there could be MANY successful spinoffs! So(insert drum roll here), I give you 10 Television Spinoffs That Should’ve Happened (But Didn’t) SPOILERS AHEAD…

(Author’s Note: unless you’ve “been under a rock, in a cave, on Mars, with your fingers in your ears, you know that The Walking Dead will get a spinoff soon. I think the series should focus on just how things got SO horrifically bad.)

I would have tuned in the spinoffs to The Simpsons and Star Trek. They looked really good.

I'd choose the spinoffs to The Simpsons, Star Trek, Boardwalk Empire Capone, and Friends Phoebe and Ursala would have been funny.
