Comedy actress Marcia Wallace has died. She was 70, a week shy of her 71st birthday. “She passed at 9 PM last night due to complications from breast cancer of which she was a long and proud survivor and advocate for women and healing,” said Wallace’s close friend Cathryn Michon, who co-wrote and directed the actress’ final movie, the upcoming Muffin Top, in which Wallace co-stars alongside her son, Michael Hawley. “Ironically it was during breast cancer awareness month during which she was always a funny ray of hope for so many. I’m devastated.”

Wallace is best known for voicing Bart’s teacher Edna Krabappel on the Fox animated series The Simpsons, for which she won an Emmy, and for playing receptionist Carol Kester on The Bob Newhart Show. “Cheers to the hilarious, kind, fab Marcia Wallace, who has taken her leave from us, Wallace’s Simpsosns co-star Yeardley Smith wrote this morning. “Heaven is now a much funnier place because of you.” Wallace also was a frequent game show panelist who appeared on more than a dozen shows, including Hollywood Squares, The $25,000 Pyramid, To Tell the Truth, Match Game and Family Feud. “In the 70s, Marcia Wallace made it cool for women to be funny. She was my hero before she became my friend,” writer Nell Scovell wrote on Twitter. Wallace’s death is unrelated to the the announcement earlier this month by The Simpsons executive producer Al Jean that a regular character which earned the actor who voiced him/her an Emmy will be killed off next season.

Marcia appeared twice on The Brady Bunch: in the second season's "Getting Davy Jones," and in the third season's "Will the Real Jan Brady Please Stand Up? "

Marcia appeared on several episodes of the Canadian game show Acting Crazy, in the 1990's, She added a large dose of zaniness to the parlour game of charades. :D

Marcia also appeared on Full House as Mrs. Carruthers and she was so hilarious in it as well

and she was also in an episode of Bob Newharts short-lived sitcom that he did with Judd Hirsch GEORGE & LEO where some cast members from Bob & Judds other sitcoms guest starred.

She was a funny actress and really added to the Bob Newhart Show. Something likeable about Marcia. I think she had little acting experience before that show and yet did a fine job among that talented group. I have her book. She was fun on Match Game too and was good friends with Brett Sommers. Sad to hear that Marcia passed away.

I know her as Carol Hester. If I wrote the obituary it would have been titled "Star of Bob Newhart Show passes away...."

Was she at one time obese? My mother told me once that she was and lost a lot of weight.

I primarily remember Marcia Wallace from her appearances as Mrs. Carruthers on Full House and as Dodo on Charles in Charge and Mrs. Lyman on ALF- a great and funny actress who will definitely be missed. May God bless and comfort her family during this sad time.:(

And she did a number of voices for cartoons, including ones like Darkwing Duck, The Addams Family (1990s cartoon), Captain Planet and the Planeteers, Aladdin, Camp Candy and others.

it's Carol KESTER not Hester and yes, she did used to be obese.

I've never seen the Aladdin series, but she was pretty good in the few smaller roles she had in Darkwing Duck. Marcia definitely had one of those voices that is instantly recognizable, so much so that it brings a level of familiarity to whatever you happen to see/hear her in. It was a rare talent and she used it well. Quite sad she is no longer with us.

This morning GSN showed some tribute episodes of Marcia and added her photo and the message "To Our Friend, Marcia Wallace 1942 - 2013, May You Rest In _______, With Respect And Affection From Game Show Network" as a funny and kind comment.

Bob Newhart remembers 'The Simpsons'' Marcia Wallace, his 'very funny' series co-star

Bob Newhart calls Marcia Wallace's passing "a surprise."

The actress, who first gained wide fame as receptionist Carol Kester on 'The Bob Newhart Show" in the 1970s -- and later grew her fan base as the voice of Edna Krabappel on FOX's "The Simpsons," which earned her an Emmy -- died Friday, Oct. 25.

"She was in the hospital and was kind of getting up," comedy icon Newhart tells Zap2it, "and her sister called Ginny (Newhart's wife) and me to ask us to call Marcia and help build her up. The next thing, we went up to Seattle to visit my daughter and my new granddaughter, and we found out she was gone. We had no idea it was that serious."

A recent first-time Emmy winner for CBS' "The Big Bang Theory," Newhart has fond memories of how Wallace came to be a part of the long-popular ensemble that also included Suzanne Pleshette as psychologist Bob Hartley's (Newhart) schoolteacher wife Emily, Peter Bonerz as dentist Jerry Robinson and Bill Daily as airline navigator Howard Borden.

"The original pilot had Suzy and me," Newhart says, "and Bill Redfield from 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' Jerry was another psychologist, but he was into the more occult kind of things. And a lot of it centered around our living in a co-op and the meetings in the building, with Bill as the head of the tenants organization.

"Between that time and the time we actually went on the air, they added Bill Daily, who was a good friend of mine in Chicago. And, as I've heard the story, either Mr. (William) Paley -- who owned CBS -- or Mrs. Paley was watching 'The Merv Griffin Show,' and Marcia was on and was very funny."

The next move came from Paley "or Mrs. Paley saying something to Mr. Paley, which was as good as being Mr. Paley," Newhart muses. He reflects that if it indeed was socialite wife Barbara "Babe" Paley, "She said, 'That girl's funny. Maybe you ought to use her in that new pilot.' And he said, 'Good idea.' Of course, whatever Mr. Paley wanted, he got. And that's how Marcia ended up on the show."

Newhart returns to "The Big Bang Theory" Thursday (Nov. 7), again playing former TV science-show host "Professor Proton," the role that earned him his Emmy for an appearance last season. He appreciates the sitcom's writing, an aspect he believes also is a major part of "The Bob Newhart Show's" legacy.

"It's funny. From time to time, I'll see an episode and wonder, 'How does this end?' I can see I'm in it, so I obviously shot it ... but I'm just another viewer. Some of the lines were just wonderful."

Thank you for pointing that out. I might have missed it, as I usually record them and see who's on the show before watching. (Sometimes I just delete.)

To whomever mentioned Marcia's weight issues: read her book. It will tell you all the problems she had with her weight over the years, from obesity on down. When I met her for the 3rd time, about 4 years ago, she had picked up a lot of extra weight.

Minor TV celebrities did a lot of those 1970s game shows, but you had to be good (usually) to be on Password or $20,000 Question. Doubt if a boozy Richard Dawsom would make the best partner. He would end up saying "Piss off Mate" and start groping the wife.

This woman will always be Carol to me, and if I wrote her obit, I would have mentioned more about Bob Newhart and less about The Simpsons.

RIP Marcia. Thank you for all the laughter through the years.
