Murder She Wrote Reboot NBC Octavia SpencerEXCLUSIVE: NBC is looking to revive one of the most successful series in TV history – Murder, She Wrote — with a brand new take from writer Alexandra Cunningham and producer David Janollari that has Oscar winner Octavia Spencer succeeding Angela Lansbury in the lead role of an astute amateur detective. The new hourlong project, which has received a put pilot commitment, is a re-imagining of the long-running CBS series. Described as a light, contemporary procedural in the vein of Bones or Fargo, it follows a hospital administrator and amateur sleuth (Spencer) who self-publishes her first mystery novel. Set in a day where sensational headlines inundate the news, this woman’s avid fascination with true crime leads her to become an active participant in the investigations. Former Desperate Housewives executive producer Cunningham is writing and will executive produce with Janollari. I hear Lansbury has been approached to be a part of the reboot. Universal TV, whose namesake predecessor produced the original series, is producing with studio-based David Janollari Entertainment.

This would mark the first series regular role for Spencer, who won an Oscar for The Help. She previously worked with NBC chairman Bob Greenblatt and Janollari on the 2001 Sci Fi Channel series The Chronicle, which the two exec produced and she recurred on. Spencer’s involvement in Murder, She Wrote stems from an exploratory meeting she took with Greenblatt. “I’ve always considered myself an armchair detective and in a recent meeting with Bob Greenblatt, he asked me what type of character would be able to lure me to TV. Naturally, I said ” J.B. Fletcher” meets “Colombo”… And here we are,” she said. “I’m ecstatic to have the opportunity to work with Dave Janollari again, and Alex Cunningham a brilliant writer who shares my love for all things mysterious and Angela Lansbury.” Cunningham also spoke of her and Spencer’s shared passions. “Octavia and I are both huge true crime buffs, amateur criminologists, and fans of Angela Lansbury,” she said. “To get the chance to reimagine Murder, She Wrote for a dynamic and multi-faceted actress like Octavia is a thrill and a pleasure.”

Created by Richard Levinson, William Link and Peter S. Fischer, the original Murder, She Wrote starred Lansbury in her record 12-time-Emmy-nominated role as Jessica (J.B.) Fletcher, a middle-aged, widowed successful murder-mystery writer who solves real murders in her spare time. The series premiered in 1984, ran for 12 seasons and spawned four follow-up TV movies as well as a spinoff series, The Law & Harry McGraw. Like other reboots, including CBS’ Hawaii Five-0 and TNT’s Dallas, the new Murder, She Wrote will likely keep the popular theme music of the original series, which won an Emmy for composer John Addison, giving it a 21st century makeover. (You can refresh your memory below.)

Spencer, repped by WME and attorney Karl Austen, recently wrapped production on Black And White opposite Kevin Costner and is about to begin filming the James Brown biopic Get on Up while also promoting her debut novel, Randi Rhodes, Ninja Detective: The Case of the Time-Capsule Bandit. WME-repped Cunningham, who is under an overall deal at Universal TV, previously wrote and executive produced NBC’s well received adaptation of the British series Prime Suspect. Before that, she was a key member of the Desperate Housewives team for the first six seasons, rising to executive producer. Lansbury is with Mavrick Artists. This marks the latest high-profile project for Janollari, who has made a slew of sales in his first season as a Uni TV-based producer, landing two put pilot commitments.

Another consequence of what has become similar to a pre-"Paramount case" situation: NBC wants to reboot a TV show that never even originally aired on their network (though was produced by NBC's sibling company Universal TV). I hope this doesn't get ordered to series for next season; if it does, I hope it ends up getting cancelled after a few episodes due to low raitngs and bad reviews. I wouldn't want to waste my scheduling on reboots of old TV series.

And another thing: Does the reboot have to air on NBC?

They can't seem to learn from history. They remade Bionic Woman, Knight Rider and Ironside and all three bombed. This also sounds similar to USA's Kojak reboot that also didn't last long.

Being such a HUGE fan of the original---if and when this is picked up, I hope it's dropped quicker than a Paula Deen Sponsor. This remake is so wrong for so many reasons. They need to get Angela to do a new TV movie instead of trying to do this garbage.

Exactly. Angela is still around, just use her for some TV movies instead of making another useless reboot!

Angela Lansbury was such an important part of what made the original series successful that it seems ludicrous to try to remake it with another actress!!

I love Murder, She Wrote- and I agree. Angela Lansbury is Jessica Fletcher. Do a new TV-movie with her starring and that I would watch. But I don't care to see a new remake version of the series with another actress. Oh well- at least the entire original classic series and TV-movies are all on DVD now- so fans can always rewatch those instead.

I read on Deadline (http://www.deadline.com/2014/01/murder-she-wrote-reboot-nbc-octavia-spencer/) that NBC's planned Murder, She Wrote reboot is not going forward.

Personally, I see reboots of old TV series as "bad for business".

I'm glad this has been canned! I hope Angela does a new TV movie instead of this horrid remake.

True, but I think the proposed show would have been banking on the popularity of the "Murder, She Wrote" name to attract viewers. (Though they still could have used a similar formula and perhaps had Angela Lansbury guest star as Jessica Fletcher- that might have been neat.) In any case, I'm just as glad that it's cancelled- I can't say I'm too surprised. It seems like there have been a number of these revival versions of older television shows and relatively few have actually survived and done well. Of the various ones done over the years, a few that I think have been successful would include the 1988 version of "Mission: Impossible" and the 2010 version of "Hawaii Five-O". There are probably others I'm forgetting about, but it seems few and far between. (I would almost want to list the various "Star Trek" series, but the follow-up shows are really more spinoffs than revival shows.) It didn't last long, unfortunately, but I was happy to see "Hunter" back on for a revival series in 2003, which used the same actor and actress from the original series in their same roles- and that makes a huge difference for these things, I think. Oh yeah- and the 2012 version of "Dallas" has done pretty well too. (Again, note- they kept some of the same actors and actresses.)
For all the failed attempts, I think that list could stretch on for quite a while...... 2008 "Knight Rider" series, 2007 "The Bionic Woman", 2005 "Kojak", 2011 "Charlie's Angels", etc...
