Now I'm back from the world of the World Wide Web and ready to do a:
Spectrum Analysis of Grand Canyon ep.
Let's do Spectrum Analysis.
Part 1
The Grand Canyon ep is one of the more Famous Brady vacation shows in the History of Brady Grid. Let us hearken back to the day that Mike told the Family:
We're going to Grand Canyon.
Brady Word reveals that this would be a 3 Parter:
Acts of the Grid 4:1
Now the Grid was set for a Special Brady Trip, which in the Vernacular was Righteous to the Marrow that is Bones. Lo this was the Brady Credo; yea it was one of the Commandments of that Eminence Sherwood Schwartz that:
Acts of the Grid 4:2
This will be a 3 Parter for All Nations on Roone Arledge's Masterpiece ABC to be Blessed By. And Sherwood said: Robert my son, the 1st Part will consist of that Hated Slapstick w/Jim Backus (Mr. Howell) playing the Prospector. The Part 2 will consist of Grand Canyon Experiences, and the 3rd Part Character Development & Heritage (of Native Americans and Brady Grid) Amen.
Acts of the Grid 4:3
And then that Shakespherian Actor Robert Reed got angered and said to Sherwood: It is not Masterpiece Theater, for the Prospector's Bit is CheeseWiz; besides I Hate Gilligan's Island. Oh Anoited Designer of the Grid, could we tell Backus to go Home?
Acts of the Grid 4:4
That old man; that Eminence Sherwood Schwartz said to Robert: It is written in the Script that Backus Must Play the Part of the Prospector, and we're paying him the sum of AT LEAST $500 A DAY! Now as a Wise Man would say (for Mike got his Wise Sayings from Sherwood Himself) Time Is Money!
Skip Farnum's Manifest Translation says:
You're costing me Bread, Understand? Now get into the Living Room & I'll be with you in a Minute! Motivating. AAAAHHH!
Acts of the Grid 4:5
So Robert Reed, fearing that Revelation of Gay Behavior would precede him to the Hollywood after being fired said "No I HATE this Prospector Crap! But being that one of Shaksphere's Tenants of Acting was "To be or Not to Be that is the ?" I'll do it w/Compromise (for Reason & Logic Are the Wonders of Brady Bunch Living)
Acts of the Grid 4:6
Now Here is Wisdom: Let there be a Pivotal Scene in the Film where the Brady Grid can be seen going to the Toilet. For this is the Ultimate Suspension of Reality (for the censors of ABC had taken the Brady Toilet out) in Brady Land. Please Sherwood? Pretty Please?
Acts of the Grid 4:7
Then Mr. Brady Bunch himself said: SAG (Screen Actor's Guild) send me a Man from the B Actor Pool to play the Gas Station Attendant. All Brady Grid Members will get a Toilet Break in Today's 1st Show!
Acts of the Grid 4:8
Then the Brady Grid cheered w/Delight & Glee as now they would get to Whee Whee! Be excited about Grand Canyon Living that is (Whee!). In particular Greg got even more excited when Sherwood said: Let's also schedule a B List Girl Actor to man the Grand Canyon Tollbooth (for Greg was always excited about actresses).
But His Excitement waned when SAG said: No action today from B Pool. So they just had a regular Park Worker play that part (she was cute though. Its the girl w/the blond hair at the park entrance/tollbooth in Part 2).
Acts of the Grid 4:9
An assistant to the Producer said to Sherwood (Time to get cracking; this is costing! This is Costing!). And that Intellectual Money Man Sherwood said OK!
Amen.
In short Brady Grid Study reveals that Part 1 of the Grand Canyon show would have a Built in toilet break during the show.
Now as per Kingsfan Data: Yes Brady Bunch goes to the toilet in this ep (an alt.tv.brady-bunch person had asked about this. I LOVE IT when Brady Fans ask Pertinent Questions; it makes the Grid become Alive.) so now you can breathe again.
Pure Oxygen In
Carbon Dioxide Out
Amen.
Not much happens in the 1st Few Minutes of Grand Canyon Part 1 (kinda like Cheers, its a cure for insomnia) except Mike's saying to the boys that we'd be learning about the Hopi, the Navajo, and basically Indian Heritage. So just when REM is setting in (and I don't mean the average Rock Band; I mean Rapid Eye Movement) I wake up. For:
We pick it up w/Brady Grid driving off in the Brown Station Wagon & Camper? Anyway a cute bit ensues when the car drives off w/out the Camper! We can assume that Brady Bunch went to the bathroom before they left, for there was Another show where the Brady's were camping at Mt. Claymore. A cute bit in that ep had Marcia & Jan & Cindy AND the Whole Brady Family going to the Bathroom. Ah except for Mike; his Bladder was Strong. For Strength is a Prerequesite for Grid Leadership.
All right. So we stop at the Gas Station w/the B List Actor (Quick Brady Fans: Who was he?) and it is Definitely Understood that Each Girl & Boy went to the Bathroom at the Station; 1st the Blade (girls) then the Ear (Alice) and then the Boys by Supposition (don't kow for sure). I am assuming All Brady Members went Wee Wee during this moment. Now:
Note the Brady Confirmation Here at the Last: Mike (or Carol) ask if there's anything interesting to see. Gas Station Man says: Nothing outside of that Ghost Town up the Road. Mike asks How to Get There (Who says Men won't ask for Directions?) and we go into:
Brady Debate.
Carol says: We won't make the Camp before Nightfall (or it might have been Mike; remember at the outset that Brady Parents Work Together anyway). Then Greg says: Let's camp out in the Ghost Town. Notice that Carol & the Kids are Looking at Mike for Brady Confirmation (for he's the Head of the House; he's on top of Grid) and Mike says: OK.
Mike's OK can be either Brady Life interpretation (Its OK to precede to Camp; remember the scene where Mike Hollers ALICE!!! ? They had to get to camp)
Or Mike's OK can also be Sherwood Schwartz interpretation (Its OK to begin Ghost Town Scene in the script. "Don't let no old ghost git ya!" the gas station man said.)
Amen.
So Let Us Now Be Clear: The next part of this ep (last of Part 1/first of Part 2) involves the Ghost Town, where some very & I mean VERY SURREAL THINGS OCCUR. I'll get into that in a Separate Thread, for this is a 3 Part Spectrum Analysis.
So from the Gas Station scene where they drive off to when they LEAVE THE GHOST TOWN, let me say Right Now that this is:
A Dream Sequence like Dallas. Remember JR got shot? JR came back to Life in a Later Season? Victoria Principal was Hot.
This is www.jumptheshark.com Law:
Any TV Series that plans Vacations "jumps the shark".
Any Dream Sequence a la Dallas "jumps the shark"
Amen.
For Jump the Shark is the turning point of a TV Series; be it good or bad. And this is a Potential Shark Jump for the Man of Barnes (Ghost Town)
Now most Bradyologists will say the Cousin Oliver & Hawaii eps were "Shark Jumps" for Brady Bunch but the Grand Canyon Ep IMO was NOT a Shark Jump for the Most Part:
Some of Part 1 was Good (getting to Grand Canyon)
Last of Part 1 was a Shark Jump (Ghost Town). I'll get to that in my next thread: Spectrum Analysis Part 2
1st of Part 2 was a Shark Jump (still at Ghost Town)
Rest of Part 2 (about last 15=20 Minutes) was Righteous
All of Part 3 Was Righteous.
Amen. This is my Opinion of how each episode Rates. Mostly Righteous except for the Ghost Town Stuff, which come to think of it, wasn't that bad. It was surreal that. But the comedy was goody good, much like that driver in Thunderbolt & Lightfoot that chauffers Clint Eastwood & friends around (good movie & book; Fancy That!). Now what was his name?
Goody:D
In conclusion, My Way of Dealing w/the CheeseWiz Ghost Town Segment is to Consider it as a Dream Sequence just like Dallas had. From the moment after they went away from the Gas Station till they set up shop at Grand Canyon Camp (they had the Camper remember?). Here's what I reckon happened:
The Brady's leave the Gas Station & go straight to camp. They do what Brady's do best & commence their regular Brady Life until Bedtime (that's why they had camper; Brady Grid is Full of Reason). ALL THE BRADY'S DREAM ABOUT THE GHOST TOWN (Togetherness!) AND THEN THEY WAKE UP. Amen. The Ghost Town is written in during the Show as Comedy Filler (pre John Ritter) for Laughs in what I can now Deduce is a Dallas Style Dream Sequence In My Mind.
Plus it was in their contracts; they had to play the part. Remember Brady Word Study from earlier? I will consider Part 2 Spectrum Analysis of Grand Canyon ep in light of the Ghost Town being a Dream Sequence/Comedy thing.
Too right and all.
And so we pick it up w/Brady Grid driving through the Grand Canyon Park in Part 2. They look at the sites, get ready for the Mule Ride, etc. Groovy! Reality is Restored in Brady Life. Get to that in part 2 as well.
So the Grade on Grand Canyon Part 1 Was:
B + + (Ghost Town part is a C - )
this concludes part 1 of:
Analysis Spectrum.
Part 2 will feature the Ghost Town, my Problems w/it, and the rest of well Part 2.
