Although all three shows had moments of humor I would say The Waltons was the most dramatic of the three with Little House a close second. It's hard to beat the drama of the great depression followed by WWII!!

Okay, wait. "The Waltons" and "Little House on the Prairie"- okay, yes, both are set in historical times and certainly have some serious and tough topics that they deal with- and these are both dramas, which are generally made up of serious and tough topics that tug at your heartstrings and so forth. (Though even dramas can have some comedic moments, as these shows certainly did.)
However, "Step by Step" is a sitcom and it is meant to be mostly comedic. Yes, it does deal with some serious and tough topics at times- and even deals with some in a comedic manner- but the really serious moments are more the exception than the rule.
So basically, I can see comparing "Little House on the Prairie" and "The Waltons", but not adding "Step by Step" to the mix. I mean, yes- you can technically compare it, but the comparison is going to fall pretty flat since it's not in the same genre.
In any case I like all three shows just fine, though I've seen much more of "Step by Step" than the other two. (I have read through at least some of Laura Ingalls Wilder's "Little House on the Prairie" books though- those are children's literature classics!):)

Little House on the Prairie is a emotional sitcom for me its like one sad episode after the other it has a realistic feeling to it that most shows dont have.

Little House On The Prairie is not a sitcom. A sitcom is a "situational comedy", Little House On The Prairie is a drama, like The Waltons.

The Walton's and Little House were dramas and I liked Little House way more than the Waltons which I thought was boring. Step By Step was a comedy and didn't deal a whole lot with serious issues that I remember.

Yeah, The Waltons and Little House on the Praire , both period dramas, are always being compared. Step by Step was a present day half-hour sitcom.

Eight is Enough might be closer to comparing, but that show is considered a dramady (drama/comedy), and was also present day.

LHOTP went a little overboard with tragedies! TW for the most part was more realistic.

I prefer The Waltons over Little House, but yes there were some weak episodes towards the last couple of seasons. It's still a fantastic show that I will never tire watching.

I guess it helps if you like history, but I do think the drama and family relations transcend time on both "Little House on the Prairie" and "The Waltons". I do enjoy history and so I think both shows are cool and interesting microcosms of the time they're representing. (Which is a number of years for "The Waltons".):)

You are obsessed with step by step, which is okay. Everyone has their favorites, but it is not a drama. Having a moral or lesson does not make it a drama. If it did then Happy Days, Diff'rent Strokes, Fresh Prince and practically every family sitcom from the 80s and 90s with life lessons and 'very special episodes' would be considered dramas which they are not.
