I’m posting this in countdown format. This is a list of my top 10 favorite sitcoms and my favorite episode for each show. This is NOT a list of the best episode or most classic, but rather my personal favorite.
#10. Futurama
“Roswell That Ends Well” - Fry and the Planet Express crew accidentally go back in time to the 1940s. A paranoid Fry tries to keep his young grandpa from getting killed. Um, stuff happens and Fry ends up with a new grandpa by the end of the episode. ;)
#9. Andy Richter Controls the Universe
“Crazy in Rio” - In my opinion there is no bad episode of this series (there are only 19) but it wasn't hard to choose a favorite. This one has been my favorite since I first saw it. This is the episode with guest star Conan O’Brien as Andy’s crazy boss.
#8. The Office
“Dinner Party” - One of the funniest and most awkward episodes is this one. Michael and Jan invite Jim, Pam, Andy and Angela over for a dinner party (Dwight invites himself and brings an odd date with him). During this get together Michael and Jan’s friction cases the guests to be uncomfortable.
#7. The Honeymooners
“A Matter of Record” - Like Andy Richter Controls the Universe, this series also doesn't have a bad episode (of the classic 39). At this moment in time, I’m choosing this particular episode as my favorite. Ralph yells at Alice’s mother which causes his wife to leave him. He then makes an apology record to get her back. It doesn't sound funny when I describe it but as any Honeymooners fan knows, it IS funny.
#6. Hey Dude
“The Legend of Jed” - This was my favorite episode as a kid and I went a couple decades without seeing it and I laughed just as hard recently as I did when it first aired in the early ‘90s. It’s from the final season and thus features both Ted and Jake (for those who don’t know, Ted left the show and was replaced by Jake only to have Ted return later on). Jake is about to be fired for screwing up so often so the gang create an imaginary employee to blame all of Jake’s mistakes on.
#5. Ellen
“Two Mammograms and a Wedding” - This is a funny episode where Ellen tries to make a new friend since she feels sad as Paige prepares for her wedding. I love the quote by the woman giving Ellen a mammogram… “I say if a woman has hard and lumpy breasts just SAY she has hard and lumpy breasts!”
#4. Wings
“This Old House” - Joe and Brian’s childhood home is about to be destroyed after strong winds cause it to be unsafe to live in. The Hackett brothers and Helen go there for a send off but realize the house has more bad memories than good. Another episode that doesn't sound funny but is.
#3. Boy Meets World
“Graduation” - This is hard because as much as I love this show, no episode pops out as my favorite. The episode I’m choosing as my favorite is the season five finale. This is a fun episode. It features the return of Minkus, Frankie and Joey plus Mr. Turner is referenced as being in “the other part of the school.” I love Eric’s obsession with keeping Mr. Feeny at John Adams High which results in him singing To Sir, With Love to his beloved mentor in front of everyone at the graduation.
#2. Taxi
“Latka the Playboy” Obviously, the most classic episode has got to be “Reverend Jim: A Space Odyssey” and I completely understand why. It’s one of my favorites, too. However, I prefer this episode where Latka changes personalities and becomes Vic Ferrari for the first time. It’s just a really funny episode and being an Andy Kaufman fan, it’s an important one.
#1. NewsRadio
“Public Domain” - I almost put “Smoking” as my favorite episode but in the end, I chose this one. “Smoking” is probably the most classic episode of the series but as I mentioned before this is a personal favorites list - not a most classic episode list. In this episode, Dave is going crazy trying to keep things calm in the office since the efficiency expert (played by Lauren Graham) is trying to make changes. She already fired Matthew and he keeps coming back trying to get rehired. Bill has his piano in the office and spends all day singing political satire songs. Meanwhile, a camera crew is there filming Jimmy James for a documentary.
