View Full Version : Best Lineup Ever
Sean Snow 09-14-2001, 10:40 PM What do you think was the best line up ever? I think it was the Spring 1979 ABC Tuesday Nite Lineup:
"Happy Days"
"Laverne and Shirley"
"Three's Company"
"The Ropers"
------------------
From the great Carol Burnett Show:
"As the Stomache Turns"
Marianne: Well, look! It's Pocahantas Purneli, the town halfbreed! Half indian, and half dressed! Come in Poke!
Pocahantas: Maryanne, I know there's something desperatly missing in your life!
Maryanne: How did you know?
Pochantas: I saw it in your eyes, I read it in your face, I read it on your bumpersticker that says "Welcome, Shriners"!

LucyFan 09-14-2001, 10:50 PM I agree. I think the HD/L&S/3's Co. line-up in the late 70's and early 80's was the perfect line-up for its time.
For Nick at Nite, I think the best line-up was the fall 1998 one:
9:00pm- The Brady Bunch
9:30pm- The Wonder Years
10:00pm- Happy Days
10:30pm- Laverne & Shirley
11:00pm- I Love Lucy
11:30pm- Bewitched
12:00am- The Mary Tyler Moore Show
Penny Lane 09-15-2001, 10:00 AM Saturday nights in the early 70'!
All In The Family
The Mary Tyler Moore Show
The Bob Newhart Show
The Carol Burnett Show
Hard to improve on that!!!
There was a show called "Arnie" on at that time between two of these shows. It starred Hershel Bernardi and Sue Ann Langdon. Anybody remember this one?

TV Guy 09-17-2001, 11:28 AM NBC Thursday nights (1986-87):
"The Cosby Show", "Family Ties", "Cheers", "Night Court", "L.A. Law"
CBS Sunday nights (late 70s, early 80s):
"All in the Family/Archie Bunker's Place", "One Day at a Time", "The Jeffersons", "Alice"
I agree with Sean Snow, who picked ABC's late 70s Tuesday lineup, and with TV Guy, who mentioned NBC's 1980s Thursday shows, as far as those being two of the best TV lineups ever. My all-time favorite happens to be ABC's Friday night lineup from the early 1970s, in which the shows themselves have become icons of the Baby Boom generation. The lineup looked like this from about 1971-74:
8:00 Brady Bunch
8:30 Partridge Family
9:00 Room 222
9:30 Odd Couple
10:00 Love American Style
Now there's a group that offered something for everyone of all ages. You don't see that kind of thing today. In the 1980s, ABC began their TGIF lineup, which was successful for a while, but those shows were nowhere near the calibre of the ones above and ABC has yet to equal them no matter how hard they've tried.
While I was looking at various sources to see some of the fall schedules that TV has presented through the years,I came across an interesting mix of sitcoms that made up ABC's Thursday night schedule for 1962-63. This lineup may not have been the best, or most fondly remembered, (it only lasted one season), but it just may be the most underrated lineup in TV history. Take a look:
7:30 Ozzie & Harriet
8:00 Donna Reed
8:30 Leave it to Beaver
9:00 My Three Sons
9:30 McHale's Navy
Again, something for everyone! This would make a great prime-time lineup for TV Land, don't you think?

Yes, absolutely remember "Arnie". It was a pretty good show, I thought. I think it ran for two seasons. But, just wanted to point out that M*A*S*H was also in the CBS Sat night lineup (at 8:30 pm) for at least part of the early 70s. So you had All in the Family, MASH, Mary Tyler Moore, Bob Newhart, and Carol Burnett. Wow!
Several people have pointed out strong top-to-bottom one night lineups, but I think CBS's early 70s line up stacks up well with anything before or since. I remember I'd be glued to the TV from 8:00 on!
It's funny though how few really solid lineups there have been in the history of TV, certainly not too many that everyone can agree on, as far as having great shows from start to finish. Also, it's weird that most of the lineups mentioned, as strong as they seem today, didn't last very long together. I guess shows were moved around to give strength to other nights, but CBS had a great lineup for many years in the 70s with the shows mentioned above.
