Is there anyone in Hollywood with a more unassailable personal brand than Tom Hanks? The man has had a hand in a staggering number of hits. His signature Hanksian character -- a hard-working, long-suffering everyman whose struggles and fundamental decency make him instantly relatable -- is his alone. No other actor can fill a Hanks role like Hanks. Captain Phillips, which opens on October 11th, is absolutely a classic Hanks role: competent, authoritative, but human to the core.
But for all the top-shelf Hanks to be had, there is a deep bench of very sub-par Hanks. Maybe it's inevitable; he's prolific, and there are bound to be duds if you produce such a steady stream of huge movies.
Here, amid the well-deserved fanfare, is a list of Hanks' worst films. It's rarely his fault, and we'll always be huge Hanks fans. We don't hold these bad movies against him. If anything, we're just happy to be reminded that his decision-making isn't perfect.
Mr. Television 10-09-2013, 06:06 PM At least they didn't list most of his 1980's movies which I loved. I wish he would do more comedy. Of the list I thought The terminal and Ladykillers were very good.
visaman666 10-09-2013, 06:28 PM Oh give me a break! I loved The Polar Express! I saw it 3 times in 3D IMAX. I have seen Charlie Wilson's War several times on TV. I thought it was funny and moving.
robyrob 10-09-2013, 09:09 PM list:
10. Cloud Atlas
9. The Great Buck Howard
8. Charlie Wilson's War
7. The Terminal
6. The Polar Express
5. The Ladykillers
4. Larry Crowne
3. He Knows You're Alone
2. Angels and Demons
1. The Bonfire Of The Vanities
I love Tom Hanks' early comedies but have no interest in him as a dramatic actor; the only of those movies I've seen were The Terminal and Angels and Demons, they were alright, but anyone could have played those roles.
Mace Dolex 07-18-2014, 05:53 PM I'm glad The Burbs' and Turner & Hooch aren't on the list.
Mr. Television 07-18-2014, 06:08 PM I'm glad The Burbs' and Turner & Hooch aren't on the list.
Those were 2 good movies especially The Burbs.
isiahthomas 09-16-2014, 02:46 PM I don't like his dramatic movies either because his 80's comedy movies are better. I didn't like The Ladykillers. Bachelor Party, Dragnet, The Money Pit, Big, Turner And Hooch are his best movies. He did a couple of dramatic movies in the 80's called Nothing In Common with Jackie Gleason(RIP)and Every Time We Say Goodbye(I don't think too many people know about this movie).
Yong Fang 10-23-2014, 05:22 AM Tom Hanks basically did a cameo of The Great Buck Howard, playing the father to real life son, Colin, who was the manager of Buck Howard. Why is this on the list?
The Ladykillers was hilarious. Yes, it was a stupid movie with lots of swearing. Was supposed to be a stupid movie. Score.
Has Tom Hanks ever play a bad/evil person in a film? I dont really count Ladykillers because it was a goofy, slapstick film.
isiahthomas 11-21-2014, 04:06 PM I don't think Tom has ever played a bad guy. I forgot about Forrest Gump LOL. I love his character in that. He made me laugh the way he ran hahahahahahahahahahaha. The Ladykillers sucked. He's done 3 movies with Meg Ryan. Meg used to be hot in the 80's. She should've never got plastic surgery done to her face LOL. I saw her in the movie The Women which was one of her last movies. Her husband had a affair with Eva Mendes and when she found out about it, she was mad. Can you blame her husband for wanting to mess with Eva? LOL. She saw Eva in a women's clothing store and she confronted Eva about the affair. When I saw the sexy outfit Eva had on that she was trying on in the dressing room, I said wow. I think most men would take Eva over Meg LOL. I love Eva Mendes and I got a few pictures of her on my bedroom wall.
Have ya'll seen Tom's Punchline and Volunteers movies? I saw Punchline with Sally Field and John Goodman. That movie wasn't that funny even though it was about comedians performing at a comedy club. Sally wanted to be a comedian even though she was a housewife with kids and John didn't want her to be a comedian. So she got Tom to help her with some jokes since he was a successful comedian. Damon Wayans was also in that. I haven't seen Volunteers but I know John Candy was in it and so is Tom's wife Rita Wilson. I forgot about The Burbs. I saw it but I don't remember that much about it.
Yong Fang 11-23-2014, 06:27 PM Well, the Larry Crowne Affair, he worked with Renee Russo, must be nice to look at be up close with her all day.
The Great Buck Howard was a great movie. It stars John Malkovich as a vain but declining celebrity hack, and his young manager (Colin Hanks, son of Tom) who has to put up with his crap all day long. Tom played the father, who was disdainful of his son's career path.
robyrob 11-23-2014, 08:10 PM i honestly don't think Tom Hanks has any regrets - he's just too successful to be worrying about a few movies that were less than blockbusters, but for the most part were all still decent.
besides, if you try to mock or tease him about them he will just buy you off or have you killed.
isiahthomas 11-24-2014, 02:43 PM What's the name of the movie Tom Hanks did with Julia Roberts when she played a school teacher and Tom had went back to school to get his high school diploma I think? Tom directed the movie. I liked it. I know Tom was happy he kissed her because she's a beautiful woman and I love her smile and lips.
isiahthomas 11-24-2014, 02:53 PM I just went to imdb.com and I saw the name of the movie is Larry Crowne. Rene Russo wasn't in that and it's not called Larry Crowne Affair. Cedric The Entertainer, Taraji Henson, Pam Grier were also in Larry Crowne. I don't remember Pam being in that.
MathUser 07-16-2016, 05:53 PM I loved the Terminal. I think I only saw it once but it was very entertaining.
Edward216 07-19-2016, 02:17 AM They totally forgot Joe Versus The Volcano.
Ed.
Chocolate Moose 07-19-2016, 09:47 AM I just watched A League of Our Own. He was sort of a bad guy in that.
king of comedy 07-19-2016, 04:58 PM I loved Big and Volunteers was hysterical.
