10/1/13
We have a winner! Smokey, a Labrador retriever mix who was revived by firefighters after they rescued her from a burning home, has been voted the country’s top firehouse dog.
Smokey received more than 68,000 votes from TODAY viewers in the contest, which yielded hundreds of entries nationwide. She was one of three finalists ultimately selected by producers of NBC’s "Chicago Fire". The three pups paid a visit to TODAY’s plaza with their handlers last week.
Smokey became a fire dog in Jacksonville, Ill., after she was found inside a home engulfed in flames.
"Smokey’s lifeless body was brought out, and with the efforts of fire and police, she was brought back to life," wrote her handler lieutenant Todd Warrick.
She now helps kids learn how to stop, drop and roll. Her win will secure her a cameo appearance on an upcoming episode of "Chicago Fire".
