For "The Simpsons", the 21st century began with the death of Maud Flanders. Now after 14 years, the producers intend to kill off another regular character.

Executive producer Al Jean admitted as much in a recent phone conference with the press, promoting Sunday's 25th season debut of "The Simpsons".

"I'll give you a clue that the actor playing the character won an Emmy for playing that character, but I won't say who it is," Jean said cagily.



In fact, virtually all the major characters have been rewarded with an Emmy over the years.

He was much more forthcoming about the season premiere, 'Homerland', a spoof of, yes, "Homeland". In it, Lisa believes that Homer has been "turned" by terrorists for his access to nuclear secrets at the Springfield plant.



Fittingly enough, "Homeland's" third season premiere and the "Simpsons" spoof air on the same Sunday night.

"It was a complete accident," Jean says of the timing. "But we're very friendly. The producers at Homeland have offices that are literally 100 feet away. They were really helpful with DVDs. Our composer, Alf Clausen, talked to their composer, Sean Callery about how they do that show."

The only one I want from that list to go would be Barney. He has become worthless.

I wouldn't have Edna killed off because it would be in poor taste after the passing of Marcia Wallace. I think the best way to say goodbye to her character would be to say that she accepted a teaching job in another city or something along those lines. It would be a good way to remember Marcia and to also bring in a new teacher for Bart.

After “Bob Newhart,” she went on to appear on several game shows and on “ALF,” “Full House” and “Bewitched” as well as “Murphy Brown,” “The Brady Bunch,” “Taxi” and “Murder, She Wrote.”

She appeared in more than 100 episodes of “The Simpsons” as Bart Simpson’s teacher, who eventually marries Ned Flanders.

Wallces was active in SAG politics as a national board member, supported the merger with AFTRA and had been elected in September to a national board seat on the SAG-AFTRA national board.

She also appeared in films such as “My Mother the Werewolf,” “Teen Witch” and “Ghoulies III: Ghoulies Go to College.” Wallace appeared onstage in productions including “The Vagina Monologues.” She was diagnosed with breast cancer in 1985 and published a memoir “Don’t Look Back, We’re Not Going That Way!”

She is survived by a son.

She was best on That's My Bush as Maggie.

Not only do we not know who gets whacked, we don't even know what episode it will be.

looks like I was wrong, according to Wikipedia it's called "Four Regrettings and a Funeral" and it airs on November 3, 2013. Furthermore the summary says:

That leaves out my number two guess, but still leaves my number one guess:

Abe Simpson

Unless there are two deaths, and the death on Nov 3 is not the major character who will be killed off, in which case it could be Montgomery Burns.

If I was going to make a bet (which I'm not) I'd say it is Abe Simpson.

I couldn't believe when I saw the news. A beautiful woman and I love Edna. She was sexy!! R.I.P. Marcia and Edna.

So, what do you think, is tonight's death the one they're talking about?

I read that they are retiring the Edna character since Marcia's death, so they might as well have the character die as well.

Usually, if a character is retired, no explanation is provided onscreen. That's what you get when a series doesn't have character development and story arcs. If this were a soap opera, I'd have Ms. Krabappel die of breast cancer, too.

On Family Guy, the portrayer of Peter's mother died, so in an upcoming episode, they'll have Peter's mother die as well.

Well, I guess not, As far as I know Chip Davis was never even on the show before so nobody won any awards for portraying him.

I guess the episode with the death is still yet to come.

They must have really done a rush job on that tribute to get i ready for tonight's episode!

In The Simpsons, a supporting actor dies, and the characters the actor portrayed on the show just get "retired" and no on-screen explanation for the characters' departure is provided. What would happen in the six main cast members had died while the show is still running? Would any of the characters they voiced just get "retired" without explanation then?

The Grim Reaper is booking a round-trip ticket to Springfield — wherever that may be — for "The Simpsons‘" Season 26 premiere this fall.

Executive producers Al Jean and Matt Selman on Tuesday dropped a few new details about the impending death, including how permanent the character’s goodbye will be.



“This is going to be a bigger deal than King Joffrey on Game of Thrones – the Yellow Wedding!” Jean said during a conference call.

“The character that dies is portrayed by an actor who won an Emmy for playing that character. People who reported on it then reported we were killing an ‘iconic’ character; I’d like to say it’s a great character, but I never used the word ‘iconic.’ It’s a terrific character and it [happens in] our premiere this coming year.”







But just because a character is dying, that doesn’t mean he (or she) won’t pop up in a future episode.

“We always have kind of a flexible reality,” Jean admitted, suggesting we could see the departed in a Halloween episode or in a dream sequence.

“What we told the performer is, ‘This does not mean the end of your participation in The Simpsons,’” Selman added.

(And, for the record, there are people on the internet who have “figured out” the correct victim.)







Fortunately, there’s more than just gloom and/or doom in "The Simpsons‘" future.

This Sunday marks the show’s 550th episode (Fox, 8/7c), which will transform Homer and rest of Springfield’s resident into LEGOs.

Several exciting events are also being planned for Season 26, including a Futurama/Simpsons crossover episode, 'Simpsorama'.

If you think the next new episode of "The Simpsons" will be casualty-free, you’ve made a grave mistake: The anticipated installment that features the death of a familiar face has been slated as the season 26 premiere.

The season premiere, which is titled 'Clown in the Dumps', airs Sept. 28 on Fox.



Speaking to EW last fall, executive producer Al Jean promised viewers “an emotional story” and dropped just a few hints about who will wind up pushing daisies.

One, the actor who voiced this character claimed an Emmy for his/her performance in the role, and two, the character has appeared in more than two episodes.

This is a hard one. I dont think it will be Krusty. Maybe one of the secondary characters? Surprised they would be doing this considering that Mrs. K has been killed off as she died in real life.

The episode sounds like an obvious, which is Krusty. I don't believe it'll be him. However, I do hope it's Sideshow Bob. That whole plot has gotten old and stale.

Maybe it'll be Krustys' dad.

It could be anyone. I wish it would be either Agnes or Rev. Lovejoy's wife. Cant stand either of them. Agnes could die and continue to haunt Skinner which would be funny. Imagine if Agnes dies and Skinner still has to take orders from his mother from beyond the grave?

Executive producer Al Jean is being tight-lipped until the very end regarding which "Simpsons" character is going to be killed off in the Season 26 premiere on September 28.

One promise he’s keeping, “When we kill ‘em, they stay dead.” Meaning, unlike "Family Guy", which killed off Brian the dog for three weeks, don’t expect this character to be resurrected despite the fact that they’re a cartoon.

Speculation has swirled for some time by fans that it’s cult character Krusty the Clown getting the ax, clearly evident in the episode’s title 'Clown in the Dumps', but Jean said in a conference call today, “We gave it that title for a reason; some have guessed the death correctly, and some are really off.”





The episode’s description reads, “Springfield is rocked when a resident dies; Krusty feels insulted during a comedy cable-channel roast and decides to retire; and Lisa steps in to protect Homer when she believes he’s on his way to getting hurt.”

Jean also refused to specify on the call which character David Hyde Pierce would be voicing during the Season 26 premiere. Many online accounts say it’s a character named Felix, though Pierce traditionally has provided the voice of Cecil Terwilliger, the envious brother of Sideshow Bob.

"The Simpsons" has killed off a Springfield resident. On Sunday's Season 26 premiere, the long-running Fox comedy said goodbye to Krusty's father, Rabbi Hyman Krustofsky, voiced by Jackie Mason.

After the opening credits assured viewers that the anticipated death would not be Homer, the story turned to Krusty the Clown, who was depressed after being roasted by comedians.

As he was visiting his disapproving father for advice, his dad dropped dead mid-sentence while saying, "You've always been ehhhh..."





When asked why the show chose to axe the character, executive producer Al Jean told TVLine, "I just thought it would be a good story about someone who's had a tough relationship with his father — having Krusty's father die without him ever getting that warmth or connection he really wanted, then finally finding it in a surprising way. If we could get a sweet moment out of that, that's all we wanted. We didn't want a crazy death, or anything shocking, just true human emotion."

As for any future deaths, Jean added, "We're never going to kill off Homer, or even Krusty. This show is always running in syndication, and we don't want you to feel bad every time you see an old character that you loved. ... Totally inadvertently, and very sadly, now whenever I see Mrs. Krabapel, I'm always a little sad, where I never was before."



Rabbi Krustofsky first appeared on "The Simpsons" in 1991 and has been voiced both by Mason and Dan Castellaneta, who voices Homer and Krusty, among others.

anyone that was upset by this is more a victim of the media over-hyping this than anything else; it was a good episode and it handled the subject well and still managed to be funny.

It was very good.

It was good but was disappointed it wasn't Sideshow Bob.

I might have to watch the episode again because I thought the episode was ok. Not great but ok. I thought the Family Guy crossover was a lot better.

Btw, I dont mind who died. I think Krusty is a major character on the show.I disagree with fans who say otherwise. If it was Superintendent Chalmers then who have a better argument but Krusty has been around since the beginning.
