Lifetime has canceled "Army Wives" after seven seasons, the network announced Tuesday.

Because the series was not renewed for an eighth season, Lifetime has decided to put together a two-hour retrospective special with castmembers that will honor the series. The special will air early next year.

"There is no denying how special Army Wives has been to both Lifetime and the television landscape," Rob Sharenow, Lifetime's executive vice president and general manager, said in a statement.

"By taking on a very relevant and timely issue, it has brilliantly captured the challenges our military families endure and the bravery they and their loved ones display while serving our country."

"Army Wives" lost Kim Delaney in Season 7, leading to an injection of new castmembers, including Brooke Shields, Ashanti and Torrey DeVitto.

But the new blood didn't bring in ratings. Only 2.26 million viewers tuned in for the premiere, while 2.41 watched what turned out to be the series finale.
