Monday Night Football (MNF) is a live television broadcast of the National Football League. Originally airing on the ABC network from 1970 to 2005, Monday Night Football was the second longest running prime time show on American broadcast network television (after CBS' 60 Minutes) and one of the highest-rated, particularly among male viewers. ABC aired a total of 555 Monday night games. Monday Night Football moved to the ESPN cable network in 2006, ending a 36-year run on ABC. ABC and ESPN are both owned by The Walt Disney Company. Monday Night Football can also be seen in Canada on TSN and RIS, in most of Europe on NASN, on Five and Sky Sports in the UK, in most of Australia on One HD and in some regions of the world outside the U.S. on ESPN International. A Spanish language version airs on ESPN Deportes in the U.S. and on ESPN International in Latin America.

I feel MNF ended when it wasn't seen on ABC, not everyone in the USA gets ESPN, but they get ABC.

During the Halftime Highlights segment of Monday Night Football on September 24, 1973 Cosell said "Look at that little monkey run!" when describing a 97-yard kickoff return by Washington Redskins player Herb Mul-Key during the Sunday game against the St. Louis Cardinals. There was no outcry over this comment.

However, during a Monday Night Football telecast on September 5, 1983, Cosell said of Washington Redskins wide receiver Alvin Garrett, "That little monkey gets loose, doesn't he?"[16] The Rev. Joseph Lowery, then-president of the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, denounced Cosell's comment as racist and demanded a public apology, but Cosell refused, citing his past support for black athletes and stating that "little monkey" was an affectionate term he had used in the past for diminutive white athletes (including Mike Adamle, for whom Cosell was on record using the term 11 years prior), as well as for his own grandson. Cosell left the Monday Night Football booth following the 1983 season, citing his waning interest in professional football.

I do agree that MNF ultimately "boned" when it moved to cable in 2006. MNF is no longer that big of a deal anymore (it feels like an afterthought) because it's no longer on broadcast television, ESPN doesn't have the luxury of flex scheduling like NBC thus on sunday nights, and there's now prime time cable-casts (on the NFL Network) on Thursdays too.
