Martin: Hey, hey, Niles, let me ask you something. Do you ever feel
like you'd just like to go straight?

Did Martin really say that? Did the writers actually sneak this one in?

Yes, he did and yes, they did.

This was the episode High Holidays (season 11 episode 11 of that season)

Martin had eaten a marijuana brownie Niles bought (for Niles to prove he could be a rebel). Here's the scene where Martin couldn't resist the brownie Roz gave him. He felt guilty and bought Niles a new brownie:

I think the writers knew that they could do absolutely anything with the dialog with Martin being high and wanted to sneak that line in. What do you think?

That's funny. Since writers are obviously aware of every word that comes out of the characters' mouths (minus that rare moment of actor adlibbing), there's little chance of freudian slips or unintended double entendre, so I'm sure it's there intentionally. It's interesting though, because usually the actors or the audience or the crew give some sort of subtle signal that it's an inside joke, the kind of thing you only notice after you get the joke (like that moment in My Coffee with Niles when DHP shoots that look into the camera after that line about being a gay man) and I don't really see that in this scene. But then since they are acting "high" it might be hard to tell. Either way it's a funny observation. Thanks for pointing it out!

That's funny. I remember that line but I never thought about that before. I'm sure that the cast knew about the lines ahead of time and I guess they were okay with it. I thought it was funny though. Bigbangbaby, I'm going to have to watch "My Coffee With Niles" again. I think that line is funny but I never noticed DHP's expression.
