View Full Version : Are all Polish people Catholic?
simonfuetes 09-12-2013, 08:37 PM The only time I remember the Kaniskys' religion being shown was in the episode "Your Prisoner is Dead" where the Chief goes to talk with the priest. That is how I knew they were Catholic. I don't remember any other time where religion/denomination was mentioned. Are all Polish people Catholic? Also, was Nell Protestant? It never showed the Kaniskys going to church, but I know Nell went a few times. I always thought she was Protestant.

In the first place, historically, Poland is a Catholic country. Most people who have emmigrated from Poland to the United States or any other country have brought their Catholicism with them. Just like most people of Irish or Italian backgrounds are Roman Catholic. However, there are few if any nationalities anywhere in the world in which a hundred percent of the population are the same religion. So in answer to your question, no, not all Polish people are Catholic. Just like not all Arabs are Muslim. However, the fact that the chief went to a priest for confession proves that he is Catholic. In answer to your second question, yes, for the sake of the show, Nell was Protestant. At one point, she went to see a Baptist minister. And, last but not least, you mentioned the first season episode "Your Prisoner is Dead". The thing that I liked most about this episode is a line delivered by Julie. She said to Katie "it is just like you to put your own personal lust ahead of Nell's pantyhose"! Hearing a cutie pie like Julie talk about pantyhose was just too much!
MrCleveland 09-14-2013, 09:01 AM Only around 90% Polish people are Catholic. There's also a big Jewish community in Poland.

Yes, mostly all are Catholic. I went to Holy Trinity School in Lawrence, Mass, many who attended were from Polish families who immigrated to Lawrence in the early 1900s and then got the money to build the Holy Trinity Church.
The Kanisky's were obviously Catholic. Carl visited the priest in "Your Prisoner Is Dead", that same Priest he had Julie find to marry Katie's friend in "An Unmarried Couple,", and Samantha even made a comment about going to Sunday School. Sunday School is CCD, which is Catholic kids who go to public schools and take religion classes on either Saturday or Sunday. When I was a kid, I went to public school for my first 6 years, then middle school, I went to Holy Trinity, so once there, I didn't have to go to CCD classes anymore because we were both taught AND graded on religion classes in Catholic School...I was mostly a B+/A- student in it there.
Prince Michael 10-28-2014, 02:19 AM It's funny you should ask this question . I don't remember what he said, but there was one episode of Barney Miller, where Stan "Wojo" Wojciehowicz ( Max Gail ) made a remark that only a Catholic might say . I said to my mom "Wojo's Catholic !", and she asked me "Aren't most poles ?" . Pope John Paul II ( Karol Józef Wojtyła ) was Polish, and he was the first non -- Italian pope since the sixteenth century .
Bonniegirl 10-28-2014, 04:08 AM I am mostly of Polish decent and I am Catholic.;)

No there isn't. The vast majority of Polish Jews were murdered by the Nazi's. Most of the rest of them left after the war. Poland's Jewish population now is only about 1% of what it was before WWII. That's why Poland has accomplished almost nothing of significance since then.

But there are a lot of modern day Jewish people who are in the United States and trace their heritage back to having Polish roots and that is awesome!:) ;)
