Its a 1969 news broadcast out of WBAL-TV channel 11 in Baltimore. Watching the tape, interesting that with so much bad stuff going on in the world back in 1969 ( Sharon Tate's murder, Vietnam, riots, the 1968 murders of Kennedy and Dr. King, protests, drugs, ect...) WBAL still managed to put a comedy twist on their nightly news by using a puppet ( JP ) to do the weather and have some of their reporters tell jokes. I was told at that time many local stations tried hard to put smiles on peoples faces from kids shows like Phoenix's Wallace & Ladmo to Denver's Blinky and Baltimore's Captian Chesapeake to local stalk shows ( many did a "house party" kind of show ) to even the local news. Somewhere in Virginia back in the 60s-70s, one of their local ABC stations had their weathergirl take out her banjo and strum and sing the weather!! Today's local tv is pretty much the same across the country. Interesting fact about WBAL. For a real life tv station they appeared in more tv shows and movies than any other local tv station in America. Many movies are shot in Baltimore and for some reason WBAL makes it in them. |
