Ariel Castro: Convicted Cleveland kidnapper/rapist found dead in cell
Posted: Sep 03, 2013 10:57 PM EDT Updated: Sep 04, 2013 12:16 AM EDT

52-year-old convicted kidnapper and rapist Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell Tuesday.

Castro was being held at the Correction Reception Center in Orient, OH in Pickaway County.

He was sentenced August 1 to life in prison, plus 1,000 years, for kidnapping and sexually assaulting Amanda Berry, Michelle Knight and Gina DeJesus while holding them captive in his Seymour Avenue house for over a decade.

Ohio State Police and the Department of Corrections are investigating the death.

JoEllen Smith of the Ohio Department of Corrections released this statement:

Inmate Ariel Castro was found hanging in his cell this evening at 9:20 pm at the Correctional Reception Center in Orient. He was housed in protective custody which means he was in a cell by himself and rounds are required every 30 minutes at staggered intervals. Upon finding inmate Castro, prison medical staff began performing life saving measures. Shortly after he was transported to OSUMC where he was pronounced dead at 10:52 pm. A thorough review of this incident is underway and more information can be provided as it becomes available pending the status of the investigation.

Good! Now the tax payers don't have to pay for his food, clothing and shelter, for 30 or 40 years.

I can see your point, but I guess part of me is mad that he took the coward's way out.

I know what you mean, Sara - that's what my brother said when I told him.

I cannot understand, for the life me, why the far right loves politicizing this case. According to them, politics have EVERYTHING to do with whether you support criminals or not.

It's because of stereotypical assumptions like this than there will never be good relationships between liberals and conservatives.

I can only imagine how much the medical staff phoned that in. Not that there's anything wrong with that. That loser had long ago forfeited his right to breathe air.

Let his victims heal and his name pass into obscurity!

Welcome to Hell Arial Castro. Don't worry, your stay here will only be temporary. On a day to be determined by the Lord Jesus Christ, you will stand before him in judgement, I have a little advice for you Arial. Be afraid, Be VERY AFRAID, because after you are judged you will be cast into Gehenna!

I have no sympathy for him.

Prison was a luxury compared to what he put those people through for years.

Who politicized this case?

I'm glad he's dead. Something tells me this wasn't a suicide. He had a lot of enemies.

I think it could go either way. I think he was enough of a coward to do it, but I also wouldn't be surprised if other inmates made it look like a suicide. I'm sure we'll hear plenty about both theories in the days ahead.

Castro was in protective custody in a cell by himself.

That's what I thought, but wasn't positive. Thanks for the clarification.

Oh yes, and everything that he did was somebody else's fault.

Let me guess, he blamed his victims for his actions? You know how those impetuous girls are. ohno:

I'm wondering if God's having him change his tune a bit...

I think we're all in universal agreement that we're glad this MoFo is dead. But it has me wondering; Did he suddenly feel like he was nothing without having kidnapped those three girls?
