I just burnt my hand on a iron last week by a accident and I pulled it back so fast because of how hot it was. So how the hell could a 10 year old girl deal with the pain of burning on her back from a iron?

In my line of work, I have heard from therapists and other professionals about children being burned with curling irons, steamed irons and other items such as cigarettes and scalding hot water as forms of punishment which is really abuse.

As for the Penny storyline, I suppose to make the mother look real bad, they went with the iron as a tool of abuse. Also, I think by using a belt, some viewers would probably see nothing wrong with Penny's mother hitting her a belt since a lot of people associate using a belt on a child as an acceptable form of punishment as well as spanking. No one associates using an iron - except those who are child abusers - as an acceptable form of punishment.

Penny was shown to be a liar in order to cover up for her mother and also to live in some sort of fantasy, to get away from the realities of her life. It is possible she could have been taken to a clinic outside of the city and her mother told her to lie about how she got burnt. It is possible to have an iron fall on you accidently. I know, I had one fall on me when I was a little girl. I was messing around near my mom's ironing board while the iron was still on. My friends and I were chasing each other on the ground when I hit the ironing board and the iron fell on the back of my leg. I was taken to the ER. The doctor there mentioned how he had seen several children get burned by an iron. I thought I was the only one to ever get hurt that way.

A lot of parents used a belt back then. I knew a lot of kids who had it used on them. It wasn't really considered abuse at that time. I never had one used on me but I was threatened with it a few times. A belt wouldn't have gotten the point across that this was abuse.

People have starved their children to death. So I think penny being burned with an iron was realistic. When I was little my uncle left me unattendent with a hot iron left on and I accidentally burned my with the iron and till this day I still have the iron burn mark on my leg. I Literally have the shape of the top part of the iron on my thigh LOL.

Those parents were horrible. I think it's great that you try to protect the kids that can't protect themselves from the ones who supposed to love and protect them not hurt them.

Neither one of my parents ever hit me with a belt, but there were a few times that my mother dug her nails into my skin. That was bad. She had long nails back then.

My scar is still there too. It is not as visible as it was when I was younger, but it is there. And yes, it hurt like a muther!

When I saw that situation with Penny when I was a child, it was traumatic for me. She was a kid like myself and that scared the living crap out of me. I took comfort in J.J. being nice to her. It was just a messed up situation.

I have to watch the true hollywood story of good times again so I can see if they mentioned why they felt the need to add a child to the show

Sadly, it's not unrealistic. :( Children get abused that way (and sometimes worse) all the time. I remember reading about a man who put his baby daughter in the microwave. Cruel, heartless monsters have always been around.
