Just got finished watching this on the re-runs yesterday. It still baffles me that this is still unsolved after all this time. To me the Sam Batel guy seems pretty guility.

For one, there are some inconsitencies in his story. He claims he took 250,000 dollars in life insurance on key employees so it could survive without them. But as her son described she was on a secretary. Not only that later on in the segment, he claims that she and him compromised that she could work partime intill she felt more comfortable. If she truely was that valuable, why would you just bring some part time temp into fill her shoes?
Also, his ex-girlfriend, stated that he came in the house that night, without a t-shirt. That t-shirt was never saw again. And up to this point never was turned into the police. That to me is key.
This answer to this question on the segment was so smug. He claims he was sweating hard. But it was a cold night. He stated that he was sweating so much because he hadn't wrote a bike in a very long time. But you don't really sweat that much riding a bike outside, esp. on a cold night. Maybe if you were biking for hours. I assume he was riding the trails/streets so its not as if he could build up speed as you can on a stationary.

Also, if she was such a key employee why hadn't she been paid after seven months? Why didn't she quit? If she was a key employee she would have skills, if she was working seven months for free it just doesn't make sense.

Then lets get to the last night. She according to her family, which i trust their take. They have no reason to lie about this. Was going to quit that night. And the life insurance policy would become void.

I just hated how on the segment he smiled, and laughed and said in a smug voice' if they would send me a very nice note maybe i would send it to the police department' when talking about the t-shirt. Well he didn't.

I am not sure if he ever did start a charity or give the insurance money to the family. He claimed the board of directors made this choice. But he is the business owner. Again, if he was taking out this money for key employees, why would they just up and give it to charity and the family?
Then her family claims she was going to quit that night.

Sam Patel is guilty as hell. Didn't the killer vomit after shooting Joan and the vomit contained what Patel had for dinner that night? What more evidence do they need?!

I'll just restate some of what I mentioned in the old thread:


Was Joan Jeffries Samir Patel's employee, or was she his business partner? It's very odd that he would have a $250,000 life insurance policy on a mere employee.

If she was a business partner, then she should have also had a $250,000 life insurance policy on Mr. Patel. If not, there's more reason for him to be the primary suspect.

The website calls them business partners but the tv show said she was his employee. The website also says that she was essentially a secretary and that in seven months he had paid her one check that bounced. In that 7 months, he owed her $4,000 in back pay. Why insure a secretary making less than $10,000 a year, for $250,000?

IMO Patel planned it from the very beginning. He said he was insuring the "key employees" of Best Aviation. It would be interesting to see just how many key employees his company had.

That quarter of a million dollars is the enormous motive. He was out to dinner with her the night she was killed, there's the opportunity. Did he have access to a gun?

Joan's family needs to call police on a weekly basis, to the point that the investigators expect to hear from them. It would be nice to drag this guy out of his hidey hole and get this case closed.

You know, I've never actually seen this case, but I just read the summary at the UM website. Man, this quote from Sam Patel about his refusal to give the police the shirt he wore on the night of the murder may be the most arrogant, condescending thing ever said during an UM interview:

"And if whoever wants it, if the Webster Police Department would send me a real nice note saying, ‘Please, could we have the shirt,’ I would be glad to hand over the shirt to them."

Talk about a guy who believes he's gotten away with murder and is openly flaunting it!

Oh man whenever I see the segment this guy gets my blood boiling when he says that. He comes off like such a tool.

The only "Unsolved Mystery" here is why that guy isn't in jail.

None of what you said make any sense. So him stalling her backpay is why you think he wouldn't kill her? But wouldn't that be motive for murder? He couldn't pay her, and she threatens to sue/report him so he kills her before she gets the chance.

Patel seems to be a scam artist. Or at least he attempted to be. The entire business situation seemed shady. He constantly said the "investors". Who were these mysterious investors?? Business meetings take place at his girlfriends house even though he is married?? One question Ive always had regarding this case is why Joan stayed connected to this without getting a paycheck. 6 months and the only paycheck she got bounced. I hate to say it but I think the police dropped the ball on this one. Who were these "investors"? Did they actually exist?? How was Patel getting paid? Where did his money come from but yet he was unable to pay Joan?? Tons of questions remain on this case in my opinion.
