View Full Version : NBA vs. NHL
irehtman 08-23-2013, 07:37 AM NBA has these conferences "Northwest, Pacific, Southwest, Central, Atlantic and Southeast".
NHL has these conferences "Northwest, Pacific, Central, Northeast, Atlantic and Southeast".
Similarities: Both have "Northwest, Pacific, Central, Atlantic and Southeast".
Differences: NBA has "Southwest" only and NHL has "Northeast" only.
robyrob 08-23-2013, 09:52 AM the NHL has gone through a complete realignment and is no longer split into 6 divisions, it is now 4 divisions split into 2 conferences:
Western Conference - Pacific Division and Central Division
Eastern Conference - Atlantic Division and Metropolitan Division
and the two conferences are uneven:
Pacific Division
Anaheim Ducks
Calgary Flames
Edmonton Oilers
Los Angeles Kings
Phoenix Coyotes
San Jose Sharks
Vancouver Canucks
Central Division
Chicago Blackhawks
Colorado Avalanche
Dallas Stars
Minnesota Wild
Nashville Predators
St. Louis Blues
Winnipeg Jets
Atlantic Division
Boston Bruins
Buffalo Sabres
Detroit Red Wings
Florida Panthers
Montreal Canadiens
Ottawa Senators
Tampa Bay Lightning
Toronto Maple Leafs
Metropolitan Division
Carolina Hurricanes
Columbus Blue Jackets
New Jersey Devils
New York Islanders
New York Rangers
Philadelphia Flyers
Pittsburgh Penguins
Washington Capitals
- to be honest I preferred the Smyth, Norris, Adams and Patrick division names and match- ups.
irehtman 08-23-2013, 10:46 AM They should do the same thing for NBA.

That...and the Blackhawks are the only team of The Original 6 to be in the Western Conference, they should be with the others.
KurtfromPitts 08-28-2013, 11:11 AM I'd prefer Detroit in the Central division.
Gary Bettman used to work for the NBA and he's been trying to copy them ever since!
There's a couple of things I don't like about the new realignment. One is the fact that the NHL now has a "Metropolitan" Division which is just a very dumb name. The other is that Tampa Bay and Florida are in the same division as Toronto, Boston, and Montreal. That makes no sense to me at all.
I also loved the old division names (Smythe, Norris, Adams, Patrick) but they were changed because the average US hockey fan has no idea who they were. I had heard a suggestion that maybe the divisions should have been named after great players of the past as in: Gretzky, Howe, Orr, Lemieux. I would have been happy with that.
I saw on this page earlier today that this site is taking part in a Yahoo NFL Fantasy League, If anyone wants to join a Yahoo NHL team I'd love to sign up!

I think TJ sometimes runs a NHL fantasy league - I really don't know anything about it though (or fantasy leagues in general)
KurtfromPitts 09-04-2013, 11:04 AM Metropolitan does sound like a dumb name, but then again from 1967-69 the NFL had a division called "Century".

True...
The Metropolitan Division SHOULD be like this....
Boston Bruins
New York Rangers
New York (Maybe one day Brooklyn) Islanders
Philadelphia Flyers
New Jersey Devils
Washington capitals
Carolina Hurricanes
Florida Panthers
Since most of these teams are in the Megalopolis Region of the United States!
James 09-20-2013, 01:50 PM I'd put Columbus in the Pacific division.
robyrob 09-20-2013, 05:00 PM I'd put Columbus in the Pacific division.
i like that idea - then I'd get to see the Canucks and Kings play more often
