View Full Version : Do police sketches ever help?
isotope 08-19-2013, 12:20 AM Is anyone aware of a case on UM where a police sketch has been instrumental in catching a perp?
Many of the sketches presented are VERY generic looking and cannot possibly be of any help to LE, while on a number of occasions (principally the Unabomber and the Original Night Stalker), I've found myself looking at sketches of masked/hooded/partially identified figures and asking why the police even bothered releasing them.
wiseguy182 08-19-2013, 02:37 AM I don't know, but Jeannie Boylan is a very accomplished sketch artist who has been on the show a few times.
1990 UM fan 08-19-2013, 03:18 AM Look up the name "Lois Gibson". She is a renowned forensic artist. She has drawn many sketches of suspects and unidentified victims to critical acclaim.
Jediknight1823 08-19-2013, 04:03 AM Not a sketch and not on Unsolved Mysteries, but the bust of John List is what got him recognized and caught, after 18 years on the run. The bust looked exactly like List.
WishfulDreamer 08-19-2013, 05:31 AM I believe the composite of John Burns also is what got him caught.

Yes. John Walsh was so impressed by it he even had it in his office for quite awhile.
amandab1234 08-19-2013, 04:33 PM I don’t remember but was Ann Sigmund ever found? Because those sketches were horrible and would not have helped! I don’t know why they actually showed them. They look like cartoons!
RobinW 08-19-2013, 05:59 PM While he hasn't been charged for the crime yet, Jeanne Boylan's composite sketch for Rodney Stanger, the prime suspect in Molly Bish's murder, is pretty dead-on.
SheRaaa 08-19-2013, 06:40 PM There's also the notable differences in the different police sketches of the Son of Sam that feuled the "more than one gunman" theories.
Mace Dolex 08-19-2013, 06:53 PM I don't know how accurate they can be, the sketch for the UNA bomber was a joke that anybody with a pair of sunglasses could be mistaken for him.
And someone had mentioned the Night Stalker Richard Ramirez who by police sketches made him out to look caucasian like Gene Wilder.

The Ramirez one is pretty bad, but I was referring to the ORIGINAL night stalker back in the 70s (who is simply, one of the worst, most terrifying criminals in US history - I cannot believe he isn't more notorious) - the sketch for him is literally a guy in a ski mask! It could be literally any caucasian male between about 16 and 60!
In fairness, I did find out that a police sketch was instrumental in bring Polly Klass's killer to justice
wiseguy182 08-20-2013, 12:45 AM One additional thing to consider is that a lot of times, witnesses unfortunately remember things wrong. I can't imagine that helps any.
WishfulDreamer 08-20-2013, 01:24 AM There are several sketches for the EAR/Original Night Stalker. Some of them do show his actual face (with his mouth wide open, scarily enough). I agree that just showing a guy with a hood is not going to help. That's how I feel about the sketches from the Garnier segment with the women shown from the back. That could be anyone!
nohwheregirl 08-22-2013, 12:14 AM And someone had mentioned the Night Stalker Richard Ramirez who by police sketches made him out to look caucasian like Gene Wilder.
I actually don't think the sketch is that far off, but this made me lol.
Someone posted a whole bunch of EAR/ONS composites on this board, and I remember thinking that there weren't even 2 of them that looked like the same person.
IIRC, a combination of the composite sketch and a publicized handwritten note got Oba Chandler nailed.

It's been a long time since I've commented on here, but I just watched the Sigmin segment today, and oh man, I forgot about those sketches. I was searching around the forum for any resolutions in regard to this case, and my search led me to this thread. Here's the sketches for reference.

I honestly don't know how ANYONE could see these and think they would be able to identify the person they're supposed to resemble.
Corkys-Place 02-15-2014, 02:36 AM Slightly off topic, but some of the composites for crimes committed in Australia range from the scary to the downright ridiculous. Take the below for example. What is he? Wanted in Gotham City or something!

MegtheEgg86 02-15-2014, 03:33 PM So I decided to check this thread out on my phone last night, in the dark. That was a mistake.
Tracy, that last composite is by far the funniest sketch I have ever seen.

It's not quite as refined as a Lois Gibson sketch, but it does resemble a human being.
I believe you, but HOW did that help? Sans hat, it looks like the sketch of the leprechaun that was spotted in Alabama a few years back.
MegtheEgg86 02-15-2014, 03:56 PM I believe you, but HOW did that help? Sans hat, it looks like the sketch of the leprechaun that was spotted in Alabama a few years back.
"Could be a crackhead!"
TracyLynnS 02-15-2014, 03:57 PM I guess they caught that guy because a cop recognized some similarities between the sketch and a known criminal. lol Yeah.... sure.
The article is here: http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2549158/Hilarious-childlike-police-sketch-thug-robbed-two-women-knifepoint-WORKED-is.html
It describes the amateurish looking sketch: Lamar County Sheriff's Department
released the poorly drawn composite sketch
featuring a round-faced, lipless hominid bearing
more than a passing resemblance to the plasticine character Morph.
Here's a couple more from this article http://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2543137/Is-worst-police-sketch-Police-release-likeness-armed-robbery-suspect-looks-like-CARTOON-person.html
This sketch led to capturing a perp:

But unfortunately, this suspect in the Madeline McCann case has not been found:

Steve W. 02-16-2014, 10:18 AM I guess if someone is intuitive enough to figure out who these perps are, the drawings are worth it, even if it looks like it was drawn in 10 seconds by a first grader.
Yep, you got it, Meg. They should have added this case to the Farina version. It holds its own with the fertility statues and the lady that sweats gold: http://www.dailymotion.com/video/xy19lf_leprechaun-in-mobile-alabama_news

kolson82 02-16-2014, 05:58 PM This thread is too funny! So many of these sketches look like they were drawn by, as SageSlowdive suggested, a high school art class.
The Tina Jefferson one always baffled me, and it is one of the main catalysts for me being wary of eye witness accounts, especially in regards to those accounts producing sketches of the potential kidnappers/killers.
I will say, though, that some of the sketches really creeped me out when I was younger. I'd turn off all the lights in my house and watch the episodes, and when one of those sketches came on (or a creepy mugshot), I'd get up and go to the kitchen to get something to drink, hehe.

Nope, he is not Kenneth Frank. The guy depicted in my avatar is Raymond Merrill Scoville, who is wanted for the murder of his lover and business partner Colleen Rachich. Scoville is also a suspect in the murder of two of his former girlfriends, He is known to preferred the company of "redheads". The mugshot of Scoville that I have as my avatar was not featured during the segment. The case was featured as an FBI Alert which also featured the cases of Michael Louis Cline, Michael John Lassen and Thomas Robert Geers.

Yeah, I remember that one. I also remember noticing his poor business partner also just so happened to be a "redhead". I'm sure that was entirely just a coincidence.

Probably because this guy doesn't actually exist, and Mrs Wacker made him up. ;)

Those first 3 "composites" are just ridiculous! They look like a High School student's art project or something!
Wow, I'm sending some of this weapons grade nightmare fuel to my wife.
The composites are exactly why she refuses to watch UM with me.
Some of the doenetwork is really terror inducing:

I guess you have to work with what your given and in the case of unidentified bodies that may not be very much to go on.
Janel "Jaycee" Miller 05-25-2014, 09:30 AM I guess composites can help weed out people. Like if all the witnesses help put together a composite that shows a red-head that did the crime, and then some blond comes forward and confesses and hasn't recently dyed his hair, you know the blond is lying.
I type that and am fully aware that some witnesses that for one reason or another are not reliable. Completely understandable too.
I'm very glad I read this thread at 930 in the morning and not right before going to bed - count me among those that would be freaked out by some of the composites. The composite of the man who was going into strip malls along Interstate 70 always freaked me out. Him and the Unabomber. I remember when the latter was caught, some network did a dissolve of the composite into the mugshot. Creepy but effective, if I am remembering it after all these years.

The unidentified victims section of the Doe Network is a massive source of creepy photos, not to mention the fact that these poor souls have never been missed by anyone that we're aware of. :(

I did start reading it at bedtime and had to stop. Composites have always terrified me, too. So do those sculptures they make from skulls, like the ones PKB posted.

This one from the Illinois State Police unsolved crimes page nearly made me wet myself when I first saw it. It's a sculpture of an unidentified female head that was found in the woods in Jefferson County.

I guess she had some kind of neck condition, which explains the weird head tilt and...distortion? I don't know what to call it, but it's freaky.

I've seen that one before and had a similar reaction. The sculpture looks like it's in the midst of some terrible throe. I've never seen anyone suffering from this condition, but man, does it look painful.

I think that I have an aunt with a similar condition. I understand that often you don't have much to base a face on but wow... Some look intentionally creepy. I have a hard time seeing how someone could recognize some of those as a loved one.

That's the part that really gets to me. I may have an unhealthy fascination with the doenetwork and I couldn't imagine looking for a loved one there.
I was an Army medic and during 2007 sectarian violence was hot in Iraq. We would find or respond to reports of bodies in varying degrees of dismemberment and obvious signs of torture. We took pictures as best we could of the faces and took fingerprints when we could. These images were taken to a morgue in Baghdad. That was a nasty place. Widows and mothers lined up wrapping around the building sometimes to look at photo of photo of contorted, bloody, shot, beheaded faces hoping to find a loved one that had gone missing.

Yeah. I get that the wryneck is going to give her a weird head tilt, but they could have done a better job with the eyes and mouth and skin. It's not even a natural color.

The shooting suspect in this sketch was described as being in his late teens to early twenties, overweight, with curly red hair. The actual perp turned out to be a 28 year old black/latino man of healthy weight and not a redhead.

In an amusing and interesting article by a sketch artist who was somewhat annoyed by people being overly critical of bad sketches, she drew this to make a point, because no one could possibly look like this:
