Movie Reviews: Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters

The tween-targeted Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters is another one of those films that reviewers have difficulty approaching with the usual critical standards in mind.

Instead, they're trying to assess the film from the viewpoint of the average young person in the audience.

Bruce Demara in the Toronto Star remarks:

"It's clearly aimed at tween and teen set and it's likely to be a crowd-pleaser among that demographic."

Gary Goldstein writes in the Los Angeles Times:

"Tweens and young teens should be sufficiently distracted by the movie's brisk pace and heroic mayhem - if they're not too unnerved by its at times nightmarish imagery."

Andy Webster in the New York Times comments:

"[Director] Thor Freudenthal is savvy with effects and keeps his young cast on point but the movie itself doesn't begin to approach the biting adolescent tension of the Harry Potter movies."

Sara Stewart in the New York Post is not willing to give the filmmakers any slack.

"The whole thing amounts of a tiresome schlep."

I'm in for it now, the Percy Jackson movies, what were they thinking? So the Percy Jackson Disney plus series is coming out, at time of writing it hasn't come out just yet. But I actually have some faith that it will be good. Not everything I've seen has left me frothing at the mouth, but I haven't seen any major red flags, and Rick Riordan (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwJEJdFNnjc) is heavily involved creatively, which is good. But no matter the quality of it, there's at least a guarantee that it will be better than the two movies that 20th Century Fox made.

Percy Jackson and the Olympians is one of the most beloved young adult book series of all time, with 180 million copies sold and a fanbase that thrives to this day. The Percy Jackson and the Olympians film series tanked after just two installments. How did this happen (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=taVVmba762w)? Well, maybe counting up the differences between the first movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uUOpGWMSWuo) and the books it was based on will give us some answers... We may be here for a while.

You asked, I delivered. While the first Percy Jackson movie (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GXzV81fbxZ4) bored general audiences and enraged fans (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=741bJ7aIa0g) of the books, it managed to rake in enough money to warrant a sequel (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XKfHNqwwopI). Which meant they had a second chance to make a faithful adaptation of the books. Did they learn their lesson? Well, let's just say there's a reason this video is even longer than the last one.
