But right now, the Batman/Dark Knight sequel continues.

If the Joker is still alive and Heath is dead, then we may need to let Dustin Diamond to return to his acting career and play the future Joker.

6. Gentleman Thief

Which is the polar opposite of his characterization in Batman’s first TV appearance. The sixties Adam West series broke away from the standard depictions of basically everyone involved with the character, with Bruce Wayne and Robin a fun-loving pair of pals fighting crime, instead of a Gloomy Gus and his orphaned ward.

All of the rogues gallery got a more friendly, prime time, family-friendly look as well. Two-Face made no appearance, King Tut was a recurring bad guy, and The Joker was changed from a murderous psychopath to Caesar Romero, who is not that.

Romero had the hysterical laughter down, the classic purple-suited outfit, and the familiar make up (albeit painted over his moustache, which he refused to shave for the role). He was similar to the Silver Age trickster, but more robbing banks, less hand buzzers.

Heath was the best and Jack is a close second.

Gotta go with the original...Cesar Romero. He had the best "joker" laugh and was so entertaining to watch!

Why not kick things off with the first screen iteration of the iconic villain, played superbly by Cesaro Romero in both 1966’s Batman: The Movie and in 22 episodes of the iconic Batman TV series between 1966 and 1968? In this extremely rare image taken as a promotional photo for the role, Romero’s white pancake make-up is being finished off by a deeply amused assistant, as he pulls his ever-terrifying signature Joker expression while holding a frame.

Behind-the-scenes pictures of Romero during the make-up process are like gold dust, and yet here’s a glimpse at the tail-end of the make-up job which does absolutely nothing to diminish how the actor managed to scare an entire generation of kids with his unique interpretation.

Even though the Adam West-starring Batman series was notoriously goofy and The Joker character had his sadism toned down significantly during this period (largely due to the Comics Code Authority ruling, before he got his edge back in the early 1970s), that didn’t stop Romero from burning that creepy-as-hell face into the nightmares of kids the world over.

8. Cesar Romero’s Joker

Yes, Cesar Romero’s portrayal of the Clown Prince of Crime is classic. It’s iconic. It’s the first live action Joker seen on television. It’s also…not great by today’s standards. The way-too-campy tone of the series notwithstanding, Romero’s Joker lacked in some key areas. First off, let’s address the white elephant…or more accurately, the white mustache.

The greatest Joker performances were done by those who really lost themselves in the role (Ledger and Hamill immediately come to mind). Romero couldn’t be bothered to shave off his mustache. Try as they may, white greasepaint just doesn’t have enough oomph to camouflage that dashing upper lip hair.

Overall, his look wasn’t bad and credit has to be given to Romero’s memorable laugh, but there was zero about his Joker that made him any more interesting, menacing or even funnier than the other villains on the show. Frank Gorshin, who played the Riddler in the ’66 series, could have easily been cast as the Joker and done the role equal justice. Romero’s performance fit the tone of the show, but when you are the Joker, you need to take a look at what the other rogues are doing, then crank it up to eleven.

It depends on what you mean as the best Joker.

Cesar Romero was just plain funny and fun.

Jack Nicholson was crazy and funny.

Heath Ledger was just plain Dark and evil.

I didn't like jack. I did love Cesar. But IMHO Heath did it best. The joker was supposed to be dark and totally cold and self serving. That was the way Heath played him.

Cesar and Jack's joker didn't kill their own men the way Heath's joker did. He was truly the darkest joker.

The original Cesar Romero. He will always be "The Joker" in my book!
