I grew up watching Capt.Kangaroo in the 1960's...my earliest memories being the old black & white TV in the dining room...
Now what years was the Captain on and is any on DVD besides the latter ones...I am wanting just the black & white years....

A fond part of my childhood too, watched it in the early 70's, myself. And I'd love to get some old episodes to show my kids. But I am not aware of any, thus far.

I think it ran from about 1957 to around 1980 or so. I may be off by a year or to on either side.

Thank you book and film for the info...not being from the '50's or earlier I wasn't aware of anything but the late'60's - early '70's....i just WISH they would put the Capt's seasons on DVD...they have a lot on DVD...don't know why not the Capt.....at least i know now the approx.time....

There are a handful of episodes out there in the trading circle,less than a dozen I think from the 60s-70s.

Just wondering why so scarce...is it because no one will release the archives or was it ever on VHS and they are rare???...but thank you for info...maybe eventually.....

Wait -- I've tried to read all I can about "wiping" practices, but I don't recall Captain Kangaroo being discussed. As far as the wiping of U.S. children's programming, even the most notorious case of Paul Winchell's programs had to do with a particular legal issue -- otherwise more of his stuff would have remained extant. There may be more of the Captain that's survived than the scant few examples available.

That would be a travesty if CBS destroyed the Captain Kangaroo episodes. I realize times are different now and a childrens show like this isn't in vogue anymore, but it was still a successful long running show and a part of American TV history, the episodes should have been preserved. CBS destroying Captain Kangaroo is just as bad as NBC destroying the Hollywood Squares shows with Peter Marshall, along with other morning game shows they used to air.

I remember seeing Captain Kangeroo. As I recall in my area, it was on in the mornings. Somewhere in 7am to 9 am time frame. Then again was in on weekends. I think it was a weekly show. Boy does time goes fast. Now all there is, is Today shows, Good Morning America on the network slots.

I correct myself on the dates - according to Wikipedia, it ran from 1955 to 1984 - almost 30 years of entertaining youngsters!

I don't remember it much in the mid 70's and beyond. Probably by then I was too old for the show. I do recall a show in this area called Good Day America with host John and Janet Langhart. She married a Maine congressman, representive of some sort.

I recall seeing Captain Kangaroo in the early 70s from 8-9 AM ET on CBS, following (where I lived) a local program hosted by someone called Commander Ralph [Vartigian]. I also remember the original theme song, "Puffin' Billy", prior to the last theme song, "Good Morning, Captain". Sometime before I watched it, Bob Keeshan also hosted a Saturday edition.

I remember watching CK back in the mid 60's...In black and white....Come go with me in the "wayback machine":

Another cartoon I remember from Captain Kangaroo was Lariat Sam, who with his horse Tippy Toes battled Badlands Meeney and Bushwhack.
