Seattle removes offensive words 'citizen,' 'brown bag' from vocabulary3 hrs ago

Sorry Seattle residents, but citizens are no longer allowed to brown bag it, because city officials have decided that the words "citizen" and "brown bag" are offensive. The Office for Civil Rights has circulated a memo encouraging government employees to stop using those terms. Memo author Elliott Bronstein suggests using "residents," "sack lunch" or "lunch and learn" instead. (Because everyone will start asking co-workers "Are we hitting Subway or did you lunch and learn it today?") Bronstein says that brown bag could be misinterpreted as a reference to skin color, while citizen isn't inclusive enough. "A lot of people who live in Seattle aren't citizens but they are residents," he said. "[Citizens] doesn't include a lot of folks." [Source] [Source]

ohno: I never thought that a "brnwn bag" used for school/work lunch would apply to anyone. Does it really matter what color the bag is? A bag is just a bag. It doesn't represent who someone is. What's next, they're going to ban the "brown bag" simply because it's brown and might offend someone? Some people are so desperate to read race into something that isn't there. Lunch learn? Really? That doesn't even make sense, imo. Sack lunch is fine.

I'm sure when most people use the word citizen they aren't trying to offend anyone. A citizen is someone who was born in the USA. There's nothing wrong with that.

I don't think I've ever used the term "brown bag." It seems kind of old-fashioned.

I saw this on Facebook today but I hadn't read the article yet. OMG, I love my Emerald City but this is beyond stupid! There is a restaurant near Seattle called the Brown Bag Cafe, so I'm wondering if they are going to be stupid enough to change the name of it too. They've been using that term forever, so why all of a sudden is it offensive? OMG....

   Oh no! That would be horrible, Marv! If you've ever been to "Beth's Cafe in Seattle, they have AWESOME ones and they are all you can eat! I can't even imagine what else they could call them!

Now, I wonder why things with "white" in the title aren't offensive? I'm sure it's just a matter of time!

Back in the late 70's/early 80's, Eddie Van Halen used a Marshall amp which gave him a distinctive tone he called "the Brown Sound" .

I wonder if the PC Thought Police might like to erase musical history they might consider objectionable. ohno:
