Sapphire's Mama (palyed by Amanda Randolph, who originated the role on the radio version) was mother to Sapphire, who was married to George "Kingfish" Stevens.

That's about all I have. Never saw any of the episodes, or heard the radio show.

Sorry I couldn't be more help.
You could try tracking down some episodes on video, but that might be hard to do since the show was pretty much banned all over the world.

What gave you that impression?

Actually, the above is an inaccurate statement; true, "Amos 'n' Andy" is no longer availiable on broadcast tv, but 71 of the 78 episodes made are indeed availiable on video and dvd...a good place to start would be the "Original Amos 'n' Andy Werb Page", which will direct you to a number of vendors who have A&A videos for sale. You can also go to http://disc.server.com/indices/8108.html "The Amos 'n' Andy Discussion Group", an extremely lively message board, where a number of well-informed posters can direct you to find videos...and information on all the various characters, and the actors who played them. (Tell 'em W.J. Griffin sent you!!)

Now, about Ramona Smith, aka Sapphire's Mama (as played on both the radio and televison versions by Amanda Randolph (she also played "Birdie", the maid on "The Great Gildersleeve", as well as the housekeeper {whose name escapes me at the moment} on "Make Room For Daddy/The Danny Thomas Show)...she was the typical "battle-axe" type mother-in-law character popular in sitcoms of the era. Her main goal was to annoy and aggrivate the Kingfish (played on tv by the incomparable Tim Moore), and, when Kingfish did something to make Sapphire (Ernesetine Wade) mad, Mama would come and rescue her daughter, or worse, double-team the poor Kingfish, to get their point across!

I hope this helps you a bit.
