Amanda Bynes is currently hospitalized on a 5150 hold ... after starting a small fire in the driveway of some random person's house Monday night, TMZ has learned.

Law enforcement sources tell us, the fire department responded to the home in Thousand Oaks, CA around 9pm -- near where Amanda was just accused of trespassing -- after someone noticed the small blaze in the driveway. The sheriff's department was subsequently called when Amanda was found standing near the campfire.



When sheriff's deputies arrived, they questioned Amanda about what she was doing, and why she was doing it -- and based on her answers, they determined she needed to be hospitalized on a 5150 hold. Translation: her answers were really wacky.

A 5150 hold is an involuntary hospitalization for mental evaluation. Amanda can only be held for 72 hours though.

TMZ just spoke to the woman whose driveway Amanda built the fire on, and she tells us, she had no idea what was going on until cops knocked on her front door. She says cops asked her, "Do you know anyone by the name of Amanda Bynes, or why she would have some vendetta against you?" She said no ... not surprising because the woman is elderly.

Cops then described to her that there was a young lady in her driveway, who had lit a fire and was carrying a "little red gas tank." The homeowner says cops told her Amanda had burned part of her clothing.

Amanda Bynes is in for a tough road ahead -- dealing with what looks like a serious mental illness and a conservatorship -- but she's not going to be charged with another crime ... TMZ has learned.



Law enforcement sources tell TMZ ... prosecutors will NOT charge Amanda with trespass, arson or any other criminal offense in connection with Monday's bizarre driveway blaze. We're told cops and prosecutors view her conduct as non-criminal and rooted in mental illness. We're told the cops almost immediately decided Amanda needed professional help -- not punishment.



But the troubled star is not out of the woods. She faces DUI charges in L.A. and reckless endangerment and pot charges in NYC.

Amanda Bynes is exhibiting signs of schizophrenia ... and medical professionals and others WILL seek a 2-week extension on her 5150 psychiatric hold so doctors can properly diagnose her ... sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ.

We're told ... ever since Amanda was taken into custody Monday night -- after she lit a fire on an elderly woman's driveway in Thousand Oaks, CA -- people close to Bynes are convinced she's suffering from mental illness, specifically schizophrenia.

Sources tell us ... Amanda's parents will now ask a judge to put the 27-year-old in a conservatorship, a la Britney Spears, because they believe she is unable to care for herself and could be a danger to others.

Amanda's parents have wanted to take action for the past couple of months -- but they didn't have the goods because Amanda's conduct was not so over the line that a judge would take away her freedom.

Now, after the driveway fire incident ... the circumstances may have changed enough to convince a judge Amanda needs help and supervision.

It looks to me like the disease is just now finally starting to manifest. I honestly believe Amanda has very serious mental illness. I hope she finally gets the help she needs.

A judge has ruled to keep Amanda Bynes on psychiatric hold for another two weeks, TMZ.com reports.

Bynes was present for a hearing at the psychiatric hospital where she has been under a 5150 hold since Monday night. Even though Bynes had her lawyer present to argue her case, a judge granted doctors' request to keep her for two weeks so they can properly diagnose her, arguing that she could pose a danger to herself.





On Monday, the fire department responded to the home in the actress' hometown of Thousand Oaks, Calif., and found Bynes standing in the driveway next to a fire. The sheriff's department arrived on scene and questioned the actress about her actions and intentions.

Based on her answers, they decided she needed to be hospitalized on a 5150 hold, which allows for involuntary hospitalization for mental evaluation for up to 72 hours.





According to reports, Bynes may be suffering from a mental illness with schizophrenic tendencies, which is why her parents have reportedly filed for a conservatorship. The conservatorship would give them the authority to make decisions in the best interests of their daughter.

Bynes' parents are expected in court Friday, but even if a judge declines the conservatorship, Bynes will still be under psychiatric hold for the remainder of the two weeks.

The news is the latest in Bynes' erratic behavior.

Judge Delays Ruling in Amanda Bynes' Conservatorship Case

Amanda Bynes' parents attempt to gain temporary conservatorship of their daughter has been denied — for now.

Ventura County Superior Court Judge Glen M. Reiser ruled Friday that because the actress is currently being held on a two-week psychiatric hold, there's no need to rush the decision, according to People.

Rick and Lynn Bynes attended the hearingalong with their lawyer Tamar Arminak, who explained that the parents sought an immediate ruling on Thursday out of fear that their daughter would be released after the original three-day 5150 hold expired.





Instead, Reiser set a new hearing for Aug. 9, which he hoped the actress would attend. "I need to have a dialogue with her to gauge the propriety of a conservatorship to move forward," he said. "There are issues of liberty and property."

Reiser has ordered a routine court investigation into Amanda's case, which will include a formal report from the actress' doctors.





Amanda's parents have limited access to the actress in the hospital, but in their filing for conservatorship, obtained by TMZ, they said that she has become "extremely paranoid about being watched" and obscures smoke alarms and windows to prevent unseen cameras from shooting her.

They also say that Amanda is unable to take care of her finances. According to the filing, Amanda had $4 million in the bank, but $1.2 million of it disappeared very quickly, including $100,000 on June 4 and another $100,000 on July 2.

While Rick and Lynn don't know the details of the transactions, the documents say that they believe she spends "a substantial amount" of money on weed and other illegal substances.





Amanda's parents also suspect their daughter is homeless and has lost touch with reality, claiming that she "cabbed it" from New York to Los Angeles. Rick and Lynn believe Amanda's suffering from schizophrenia and are worried that she'll harm herself unless they're able to provide round-the-clock care.

Amanda Bynes is doing remarkably better ... she's stabilized, not hearing voices and it's all because of a cocktail ... TMZ has learned.

Sources familiar with the situation tell TMZ ... doctors at the psychiatric hospital where she's being held have given her a combination of meds -- referred to as a cocktail -- to control what appears to be schizophrenia.

Our sources say Amanda responded quickly and dramatically. We're told in the last 3 days, Amanda has stopped talking to herself and stopped insulting people. To the contrary, we're told she's become downright polite, even saying "please" and "thank you." She has shown no signs of violence.

The progress is all the more stunning because these cocktails are notoriously difficult to gauge -- getting the right combination of meds with the right doses is something of a crap shoot. Our sources say the meds take 7 to 10 days to fully kick in, so they're not declaring victory yet, but they're optimistic.

But there's an ironic twist. Amanda is scheduled to have a court hearing today ... where she's trying to get out of the psych hospital. The fact that she's doing better can actually help her case, but we're told doctors are confident the judge will not let her out for several reasons. First, it's unclear if the meds will work long-term. Also, it's highly uncertain she'll voluntarily take the drugs.

One more thing. There are reports Amanda's parents may back off the conservatorship if she does better in the psych ward. Our sources say that is "absolutely untrue." Amanda's parents feel it's essential for her to get long-term care and supervision.

It's a good thing that she's feeling better and that the medicine is working, but medication isn't the be all end all. She needs to be carefully watched and monitored to make sure that she keeps taking the medication as prescribed, and basically to give her a sense of security and peace of mind.

You just restated what you said in your last post. I get it, you don't like Amanda's acting. But, it's a freaking TV show. Who cares?! We are talking about a real person who is experiencing real suffering. Being a bad actor is no reason to wish suffering on anyone. OMG, am I in the Twilight Zone?!

Amanda Bynes' doctors have extended the actress' psychiatric hold for another 30 days, TMZ reports.

Bynes was due in court today where her parents are requesting a temporary conservatorship, but her doctors determined she was not well enough to leave the hospital.



Instead, a judge visited Bynes at the hospital and extended her psych hold for another 30 days. A judge can only give such an order if the patient is "gravely disabled as a result of a mental disorder."

Bynes' parents are still pursuing temporary conservatorship, which will also give them control of the actress' finances.

Amanda Bynes is going to remain under medical care as legal control over her person and estate is temporarily handed to her mother, Lynn.

Bynes, 27, was placed under an involuntary psychiatric hold in late July after she was "involved in a disturbance in a residential neighborhood" in Thousand Oaks, California. According to People magazine, the hold was initially for 72 hours, but on July 25, a judge ordered Bynes to be held for an additional two weeks.

At the same time, Bynes' parents, Rick and Lynn, filed for conservatorship of their daughter, who has been exhibiting increasingly bizarre behavior in recent months.





In a hearing Friday, Judge Glen Reiser with the Superior Court of California in Ventura County granted her parents' request for conservatorship, noting that Bynes is under a "continued ... hold in a psychiatric facility."

Bynes' mom, Lynn, now has the ability to decide her daughter's basic needs, including where she should reside. Additionally, People notes, she now has control over her daughter's estimated savings of $3 million, for the time being.





The actress, who got her start on Nickelodeon with programs "All That" and "The Amanda Show", faces three misdemeanor charges relating to an incident involving a bong allegedly tossed from her Manhattan apartment in May.

In addition, she also has a DUI case pending in Southern California, while a pair of separate hit-and-run charges against her were dismissed last year.

This is so sad. I know that someone needs to be appointed as her conservator, but I hope that there are some sort of safeguards in place to make sure that her mother does not mishandle Amanda's funds. If Amanda had been exhibiting strange and escalating behaviors over the years, why didn't her family try to get her some help while she was still a minor? My gut feeling is that as long as she was being the family cash cow, they were willing to overlook things. I hope I am wrong.

It is indeed a very sad story. I hope and pray Amanda gets well and has a good support system around to take care of her.
