"Hot in Cleveland" To Get Russian Adaptation
7/22/2013
by Nick Holdsworth
Three years after its TV Land launch in the U.S., "Hot in Cleveland" is to debut in adaptation on Russia’s leading national broadcaster Channel One.
The multi-episode prime-time comedy produced by Endemol-owned WeiT Media is the first scripted adaptation deal for the hugely successful show, which sees a group of women of a certain age moving to a provincial city (Cleveland) and deciding to stay -- after they find they are "hot" there.
It stars Valerie Bertinelli, Wendie Malick, Jane Leeves and Betty White.
The Russian version of the show, which airs starting July 29, will likewise see the lives of a group of best friends from Moscow change forever when they unexpectedly find themselves in a small town and decide to stay.
Russia, like America, covers a huge swathe of territory with very clear town and country attitudes and cultural differences, making the show easily adaptable.
Other U.S. shows that have been ratings hits in Russian adaptations include "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "The Nanny".
After "Hot in Cleveland" launched in the U.S. in 2010, it quickly became a ratings success. Endemol Worldwide Distribution (EWD) has already sold the U.S. series to more than 200 territories.
