View Full Version : Can someone help me with this person's name? Clifford Sherwood
RainMan94 07-21-2013, 11:04 PM I remember an old case I saw several years ago on UM. I can't remember if it was a Lost Loves or Missing Persons segment, but it was about a young boy who walked to school one day with another boy and never came home. Both boys were missing. It happened in the 1940s or 1950s. The thing that stood out to me is that the boy's mother went outside every day ever since her boy went missing to see if maybe one day he'd come home. I also remember that the boy's mother had a chance to identify a young boy's torso to see if it belonged to her son but declined to see it since she believed her son was still alive. I believe this may have happened either in Canada or somewhere in the northern United States. If anyone remembers what this boy's name is, could you let me know? It's the only segment that I haven't been able to get updates on since the details I remember aren't enough for me to search for on this thread or online. Thanks!

The boy's name was Clifford Sherwood. His friend's name was Georges Gumbley. I believe he lived in Quebec. He is still missing, as is Gumbley.
RainMan94 07-22-2013, 04:59 PM Thank you very much! I don't remember anything about the father in this case even though it seems to be a crucial part as to his possible whereabouts. Anyway, thanks a lot for the info!

You're welcome! Clifford's father (who either divorced or outright left his mother, Frances) was named Nephi Sherwood and it was speculated that he abducted him and took him to British Columbia, where he was living at the time. Sorry for not adding that in my first post. :)
RainMan94 07-22-2013, 11:53 PM I really hope that he did get taken by his father and not kidnapped by someone else and possibly murdered. However, I hate it for his mother. Even if she was controlling, she should have at least had the comfort of knowing he was safe. But I don't get what happened to George. Surely Clifford's father wouldn't have taken him in as well. Too many twists and unanswered questions, but a sad case nonetheless.
WishfulDreamer 07-23-2013, 01:55 AM It does seem hard to believe that Clifford's father would have offed his friend to get to him, but it is a theory that has come up. According to Clifford's mother and sister, he had a horrendous temper. I'll never forget how she said he would even smash a television set if you tried to bring Clifford up in conversation  It's really hard to swallow that he could have been brainwashed to never seek out his mother or siblings and was kept away from them without it ever being discovered that his father had done it. I think the father may, unfortunately, just be a red herring and that the boys could have met with foul play.
I sincerely hope the torso that Clifford's mother looked at has since been identified or exhumed and tested for DNA. It is important to eliminate those remains as Clifford or George (as they almost certainly belonged to a young boy who had been dead about as long as the two were missing) and even if they don't belong to either boy, whoever that poor boy is needs to be known.
RainMan94 07-24-2013, 02:03 PM I agree 100%. I just can't imagine losing someone for so long and not getting any kinds of answers or clues as to their whereabouts. There was another segment I would like to know about if you possibly know about it as well. There were these two business owners, I believe a pizza restaurant, and they were rivals. One of them ended up dead, I believe a presumed suicide. The rival was immediately suspected of having him killed or killing him himself. That's about all I can remember about it.

RainMan94 07-28-2013, 11:14 PM Thank you! Luckily, this one has been solved. I have another that I remember. There was a man who owned a house or an apartment in I believe West Virginia. He hired a black man as a farmhand and soon after, the man began living in the owner's home. Eventually, it seemed as if the black man had been taking over ownership of the house as the man who owned it was becoming more and more out of the picture. Some time later, the owner of the house was found dead. It is thought that the black man imprisoned the owner in the basement for a while before killing him and moving out of the house. I believe the man was eventually caught, but it seemed creepy to me since I live near West Virginia.

When Frances Sherwood died a couple years ago, there was a picture posted of her online, looking much older than she did in the UM segment, hugging a picture of Clifford. She looked so sad, it was one of the most heartbreaking pictures I've ever seen.

Aw, you guys crack me up. Outside of my family, I pretty much know no one who watches this show and don't have anyone to exchange awesome one-liners with. But I can come on here and tell you guys to ''look at it, Omar'' or that I gotta light the grill and you get me. :p

I saw that. Very sad. She reminds me of a family friend who passed away several years ago. She sure did age since that segment aired.
