View Full Version : Did anyone else hate Bonnie?
wiseguy182 07-15-2013, 07:57 AM I hated that woman. I hate how she casually mentions that she and her husband held up a liquor store. If one my friends said that, I would disassociate with them right on the spot and tell them to get out of my house. And since Bonnie didn't elaborate, I have to assume that they went unpunished for the crime and the victim may have been scarred for life.
She practically made Roseanne look thin. That isn't easy to do.

I don't know if I hated her, but I didn't see any reason for her other than to give Rosanne another friend. I liked her better than that idiot gay friend of hers that was married to Arnie. I can't recall her name off hand, but she was a real piece of crap - and NO, not because she was gay either so no one needs to jump my crap for it. She was just an idiot.
gidgetgrape 07-15-2013, 04:54 PM "Bonnie" came across as a laid-back, seen everything kind of person. Between her and Roseanne, I don't know how anyone got served in that diner.
During the original broadcast, I was a teenager and really into rock music. Bonnie Bramlett's daughter, Bekka, was dating Bon Jovi's Richie Sambora. I don't think they dated long, but I remember seeing a photo of Bonnie and Bekka with Richie in Metal Edge Magazine. I also remember the accompanying article stated that Bonnie was considered a special guest on "Roseanne" because of her musical background.

I wouldn't want to be friends with a criminal who holds up liquor stores. And you're right, she did just casually mention it as if she was describing what she had for dinner.
The only Bonnie moment that I enjoyed was when she sang "You Really Got A Hold On Me" at the mother's day picnic. But it was really the ACTRESS that enjoyed and not the character. Bonnie is trash.
Sean Conner 07-18-2013, 02:51 AM Well I don't see how Bonnie's weight has anything to do with her character...
But I liked her and would've rather she stuck around than turning Nancy into Roseanne's full-time new best friend (replacing Crystal).
One of my favorite episodes is the Mother's Day episode where Bonnie sings at the end.

I agree.
I liked Bonnie way more than Crystal. Crystal was too much of a pushover.
damon strong 07-20-2013, 05:14 AM The actress who played her wasn't even an actress, she was known for being a singer, and I think she did a competent job considering her lack of acting experience. Roseanne wanted her on the show because she was a fan of hers during her music heyday in the late 1960s.
skrink 07-23-2013, 04:35 PM Her character was too rough for my liking. However - much better than Crystal!!! Geez!
Corkys-Place 05-22-2014, 12:03 AM Does anyone here know why Natalie West (Crystal) was phased out of the show? She was pretty much a full time character in the beginning and even had her name in the opening credits at one stage.

Found this explanation:
Natalie West was cast as Roseanne's best friend and co-worker, Crystal Anderson. Crystal was consistently unlucky in love (with several failed marriages in her past) and her character alternated between naïve and just plain goofy. The character of Crystal was conceived during the original "pitch" meetings before the Roseanne show was sold " after all, it's a golden rule of sitcoms that every main character needed a wacky friend or neighbor to "bounce" off. However, as the series progressed, it became evident that not only did Laurie Metcalf ("Jackie") and Roseanne Barr have better chemistry, it was also easier for the writers to concoct situations involving Roseanne and her sister than Roseanne and her best friend (especially since Crystal had a young son to care for). When Roseanne married Tom Arnold and he joined the cast as Arnie, Sandra Bernhard was brought aboard as Arnie's free-wheeling love interest (Nancy) in order to provide story lines for Roseanne's new hubby. With Jackie acting as Roseanne's best friend and Nancy providing the wackiness quotient, there wasn't much left for Crystal to do, so Natalie West was eliminated from the opening credits after Season Four and reduced to "recurring character" status.

mets82 05-22-2014, 04:22 PM Its too bad because I liked Chrystal. I think her last show was the first episode 7 I think although I'm not sure.

First episode of Season 8, when Roseanne has a baby shower (and Lecy Goranson returns as Becky).
But after that, she disappears. I don't even think she's ever mentioned again.

Ah thanks for posting that info for me. Clears things up a bit.
Funny Crystal moment from early Season 2. Dan plans a surprise party for Roseanne thinking she got that new job - which she didn't get after all due to lack of computer experience. Roseanne pulls up in the driveway and everyone is trying to hide. Crystal freaks out and is standing in the middle of the Conner living room with her hands in the air when Roseanne walks in.
principehomura 05-25-2014, 02:37 PM I liked Crystal too.
Not that I hate Nancy, but I'd take Crystal over her any time.
While Nancy is a light-version of Roseanne (sometimes not light), strong and self-confident, Crystal was fragile and insicure, a character that really fit in the show's environment.
mets82 05-29-2014, 05:40 PM I think the best Crystal scene is when she comes over to check on Jackie to see if she's doing a good job when Roseanne's away. I think it was season 2 and in the end Roseanne was sporting that very short hairdo in which Dan responded "Ah, Dorothy Hamill."
Anyway, Chrystal comes in and then Jackie goes "Chrystal, whats with the accent? You came from Lanford just like all of us" and then Chrystal and Jackie go
"My father came from Arkansas." Then Jackie touched did that thing with her nose. That was laugh out funny.

LOL, I remember that. Was that when Jackie said something to Crystal about her "Little Cosmetic Bag and Pink Kitchen Chairs". :p
Bonniegirl 08-30-2014, 07:58 PM I loved Bonnie (and I'm not just being partial because of her name) LOL!:D She was cool, very down to earth, and she could sing! And her hubby Duke was David Crosby!! I think she was an awesome , believable addition to the cast. I liked Crystal too a lot. After Bonnie and Crystal left, and Roseanne got to be friends with Nancy, it was very unbelievable. That character really didn't seem like a person that would live in Lanford, small town middle America. She was OK for 5 or 10 minutes when she was Arnie's G/f . After Arnie left the show, Nancy should have left as well.
Back to Bonnie, yes Duke and her held up a liquor store back in the day when they were drinking heavily . But people rehabilitate and they became good citizens. And she wasn't bragging about it, she matter of factly told about it because it happened. why lie or keep secrets from your friends? Bonnie is definitely a person I would be friends with! Crystal too, she was a bit dingy , but she was really sweet! :)
Kasey 10-12-2014, 03:56 PM Agreed Bonniegirl. I loved her character and was sorry when she more or less disappeared after they closed the diner.
IIRC, wasn't the liquor store thing part of a conversation where she and Roseanne were discussing regrets? I haven't watched the episodes for around 7-8 years when they first came out on DVD.

I think you are right. That might have been the ep where Jackie wakes up in bed with Arnie, and she is mortified! She was depressed over a breakup or something and had too much to drink and wound up sleeping with Arnie!
Than the girls, Roseanne, Jackie, Crystal, Bonnie and Anne Marie all went out for the evening, and ended up sneaking into the diner after it was closed. I think the night guard knew they were there and it was cool. ;)
Anyway Jackie started talking about how she did something really , really bad and regretful referring to the Arnie incident. So they were all like, we all have done things we regret in our life, it can't be that bad! so to cheer Jackie up they all told of a regret in their past, and that is when Bonnie said about her and Duke holding up the liquor store!
It was funny because out of all of their stories, they were all in agreement that sleeping with Arnie was far worse!!! My Gosh, Arnie really was considered a creep. I didn't think he was that bad! :D
Kasey 10-13-2014, 10:18 AM Thanks Bonniegirl for jogging my memory. I now recall them all laughing about their confessions but then the tone turned momentarily serious once Bonnie admitted to the hold-up.
chantingbuddha 10-23-2014, 07:53 PM I'm a huge fan of Bonnie Bramlett's music and I enjoyed her on Roseanne. She even made an appearance on "Roseanne's Nuts." I think her friendship with Roseanne on the show was very believable as well. I wished she had stayed on the show longer.
Crystal, on the other hand was very annoying. From some articles I have read, she was very difficult to work with at times. If you watch the bonus features on the Mill Creek DVDs, she is even blurred out! lol....For some reason she would not allow her image to be used in those.
wiseguy182 03-29-2015, 01:12 PM What I don't understand is how Jackie, a former cop, wouldn't have an issue with Bonnie holding up a liquor store. Even though the statute of limitations probably passed, Jackie would have frowned upon it, but instead she acts like it is no big deal.

Well Jackie also got high with Dan and Roseanne in the bathroom once.
I don't think her once being a cop means much - especially in a situation like that where you're among friends.
