As many of us have long since suspected over decades after comparing athletes of recent generations the temptation to enhance one's performance on the track or athletics field with illegal substances has become too hard to resist with the millions of dollars available to those who manage to attain the pinnacle of their chosen sport. It is in this light that I report that Tyson Gay has been discovered to have taken such illicit products no doubt to increase performance over rivals in the forthcoming World Athletics Championships to be held in Moscow next month.

It is high time for a complete overhaul of this sport, with all world records achieved in the 21st century expunged from the record books. Let's not busy ourselves with the blame game of the individual athletes, the coaches or the drug pushers, but just try to revert back to a time when taking part in sport was just as important as winning at all cost.http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/othersports/athletics/10178657/Tyson-Gay-tests-positive-for-banned-substance.html

One would like to believe 100m world record holder Usain Bolt's pronouncement that he hopes to restore the tarnished reputation of track and field, but there have been so many doping scandals from a host of athletes over the years that I don't hold out much hope. The recent death of Italian sprinter Pietro Mennea at the premature age of 60 reminds me of Flo-Jo's demise, and one has to ask oneself whether it's worth it to claim a medal to which you're not entitled and store up health problems waiting for you down the line.http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2013/mar/22/pietro-mennea
