Cory Monteith, a Canadian actor best known for playing Finn Hudson on the hit show "Glee", was found dead Saturday in a Vancouver hotel room, police announced on Saturday. Monteith was 31 years old.

The Hollywood Reporter reports that he was found at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel.

Vancouver Police say they believe he was alone at the time of his death, and do not suspect foul play:





Shortly after noon today, the Vancouver Police received a call from the BC Ambulance Service regarding a sudden death in a room on the 21st floor of the Fairmont Pacific Rim Hotel at 1038 Canada Place in downtown Vancouver.

Police attended within minutes of the call and paramedics advised the man in the room was clearly deceased. Coroner’s staff did attend the scene.

The deceased has been identified as 31-year-old actor Cory Monteith, who achieved great fame on the popular TV series "Glee".



Before I give further information, on behalf of the Vancouver Police, I want to pass on our condolences to the family, friends, castmates and millions of fans of Mr. Monteith. As was the case in countless homes, I watched "Glee" regularly with my daughters, and I know there will be shock and sadness in many households with the news of his tragic death.

Mr. Monteith checked into the hotel in July 6th and was due to check out of the room today. There were others with Mr. Monteith in his room earlier last night, but video and fob key entries show him returning to his room by himself in the early morning hours and we believe he was alone when he died.

When he missed his check-out time, staff went to the room at noon and found his body.



We know there will be considerable interest in this case, and we have detectives assigned to the case who attended with our Forensic Identification Unit to examine the scene, to ensure to the extent possible that there are no unanswered questions.

Hotel video has been secured as well as room access records. Our investigators have spoken with hotel staff, who are providing the utmost in cooperation.

An autopsy is schduled for Monday. The Coroner will be determining the next steps with respect to establishing cause of death, but all indications are that there was no foul play.

Family, Vancouver police said, have just been informed. He had been deceased for several hours when his body was discovered.

"We are so saddened to confirm that the reports on the death of Cory Monteith are accurate. We are in shock and mourning this tragic loss," representatives for the actor told THR in a statement.


Glee executive producers, producers 20th Century Fox Television and Fox Broadcasting Co. said in a statement: "We are deeply saddened by this tragic news. Cory was an exceptional talent and an even more exceptional person. He was a true joy to work with and we will all miss him tremendously. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones."

Monteith has played Finn Hudson, the lovable boy next door, on Glee since it debuted in 2009. He also has a role in the upcoming indie All the Wrong Reasons. It's unclear how Monteith's sudden passing would impact production on Glee, which is poised to premiere its fifth season on Sept. 19.


Glee music supervisor Alex Anders said of Monteith, with whom she frequently worked in the recording studio: "Heartbroken by the loss of my friend @CoryMonteith Praying for his family and loved ones. Such a good hearted man that will be sorely missed."

Monteith's Glee co-star Mark Salling, who played Finn's best friend, Puck, took to Twitter on Saturday as news of his friend's death had spread with a poignant, "no." Castmate Dot-Marie Jones used all caps to convey her grief.


Added Adam Shankman, who directed Monteith in Glee's Rocky Horror Picture Show-themed episode: "I will always cherish you in my heart. Thank you for so many wonderful days. I love you," he tweeted along with a picture of the late actor with Michele on-set.

Said castmember Dot-Marie Jones, who played Finn's former football coach, on Twitter: "I have no words! My heart is broken Cory was not only a hell of a friend he was one amazing men [sic] that I will hold close to my heart forever."

Monteith became a face for the Fox musical when the series premiered in 2009, rocketing to fame as the first hit from the series, a Monteith-led cover of Journey's "Don't Stop Believin'" turned the series into a worldwide phenomenon. The series airs all over the world and has spawned scores of gold records on the Billboard charts for its ever-growing list of singles and soundtracks.


Monteith voluntarily admitted himself to a treatment facility in late March for substance addiction, receiving support from Glee producers and Michele as well as the network. His character, who was slated to return for a handful of episodes of Glee's fourth season, was reduced to accommodate the young actor.

After Monteith's character graduated from the high school-set series, Monteith continued to have a major presence on the series. His character spent the bulk of season four searching for an identity and finally settled on studying to become a teacher after returning to co-coach his former glee club. He was slated to be a series regular for season five, one of only a handful of original stars to still be featured in that capacity.

Fox and the Glee creators briefly considered doing a New York-set spinoff featuring Monteith, Michele (Finn's on-screen love, Rachel) and Chris Colfer (Kurt) before opting instead to do a split-location format in season four.

It is sad. I saw him in the show up to the second season. He was so talented. RIP Corey.

This is really sad and shocking. RIP.

This is so sad. Mr. Monteith was a superb performer, but the thing that impressed me most about him was how candid he was regarding his struggles with addiction. He stated in an interview something to the effect of, "I deal with my addiction every day and it's hard work. I never want someone to look at me and think that getting on TV is your next logical step after leaving rehab."

I wish that I had the link to the article. I admire that he was trying to live his life in a way that was an inspiration to others without making excuses about his past. RIP.

I am not surprised to be honest with you, he started doing drugs since he was 13 years ago and went to rehab for the first time at age 19 so I knew it was coming that he would die of a drug overdose, I did not think he would overcome his addiction to drugs and I was right

Most everyone woke up to the sad news Sunday morning that “Glee” star Cory Monteith was found dead at the of age of 31. Monteith became an overnight sensation in 2009 on Fox’s musical-comedy series as Finn Hudson, a high school football star who becomes an integral member of the school’s glee club.

Over the decades, other regulars on TV series have also died suddenly. Here is a look at a few:

Larry Hagman

The actor was in his second season reprising his signature role of the ruthless J.R. Ewing on TNT’s reboot of “Dallas” when he died Nov. 23, 2012, of complications from cancer at the age of 81. The producers came up with a clever way for J.R.’s character to die in the series this past spring, which involved J.R. hatching a “beyond the grave” plan to implicate his nemesis Cliff Barnes.

Hagman’s death was not the only one that rocked the series. When it was enjoying enormous success on CBS more than 30 years ago, Jim Davis, who played J.R.’s dad, Jock, died of cancer on April 26, 1981, at the age of 71. Instead of killing off the character immediately, the producers had him away from the Southfork ranch, drilling for oil in South America. Finally in January 1982, Jock was declared dead in a helicopter crash.

Jon-Erik Hexum

The strapping, good-looking, 26-year-old actor was starring in the CBS detective series “Cover Up,” with Jennifer O’Neill. It had been on the air less than a month when, on Oct. 12, 1984, Hexum became bored during a long day of filming and, as a joke, put a .44 magnum prop gun to his temple and pulled the trigger. Tragically, the gun fired and the plastic wadding from the blank cartridge shattered his skull. Five hours of surgery ensued, but there was too much damage. He was taken off life support on Oct. 18.

Antony Hamilton was hired to replace Hexum and his first episode debuted a month later. The series, though, was history after one season.

Nicholas Colasanto

The character actor and TV director played the kind, sometimes forgetful bartender Ernie “Coach" Pantusso on the Emmy Award-winning NBC comedy series “Cheers.”

Colasanto died of a heart attack during the third season on Feb. 12, 1985, at the age of 61. The character’s death was addressed in the fourth season premiere, which also marked the debut of Woody Harrelson as his replacement, Woody Boyd, a naive young farm boy from Indiana who had been taking mail-order courses in bartending from Coach.

John Ritter

The popular actor, who shot to fame in ABC’s “Three’s Company,” was rehearsing an episode on Sept. 11, 2003, for the second season of his ABC sitcom “8 Simple Rules for Dating My Teenager Daughter” when he fell ill on the set. He died that evening of aortic dissection at the age of 54.

ABC aired the three episodes Ritter had already done. After a hiatus, James Garner and David Spade joined the cast and the show was retitled “8 Simple Rules.” It was canceled in 2005.

Phil Hartman

The former “Saturday Night Live” regular was starring as a pompous on-air anchor working at a news radio station on NBC’s sitcom “NewsRadio," when on May 28, 1998, his third wife, Brynn, shot and killed him while he was sleeping, then committed suicide. He was 49.

His character, Bill McNeal, was said to have died of a heart attack while watching TV. Another "SNL” regular, Jon Lovitz was brought in to play an on-air personality who had an insecurity problem. The series ended the following year.

Freddie Prinze

The popular Hungarian/Puerto Rican comic was starring with Jack Albertson on the hit NBC comedy series “Chico and the Man.” Battling susbstance abuse and severely depressed after the collapse of his marriage, Prinze put a pistol to his temple in front of his manager and pulled the trigger on Jan. 28, 1977. He was rushed to the hospital with a massive head wound, but was taken off of life support the following day. He was 22.

A reworked version of the series, “Chico,” began that fall with Albertson and Gabriel Melgar as a young boy named Raul joining Albertson. The series was history by 1978.

Peter Duel

The affable, handsome actor was starring with Ben Murphy in the lighthearted “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”-style ABC western “Alias Smith and Jones," which began in January 1971 as a midseason replacement. Duel was just 31 when on Dec. 31, 1971, he died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. Roger Davis, who was providing the opening and closing narration, was chosen to replace Duel. The series continued through January 1973.

Among other regulars who died during production were Nancy Marchand (“The Sopranos”); Alice Pearce and Marion Lorne (“Bewitched”); Redd Foxx (“The Royal Family”); John Spencer (“The West Wing”); Michael Conrad (“Hill Street Blues”); Jerry Orbach (“Law & Order”); Jack Soo (“Barney Miller”); Bea Benadaret and Smiley Burnett (“Petticoat Junction"); Will Geer (“The Waltons”); Diana Hyland (“Eight Is Enough”); Florence Halop and Selma Diamond (“Night Court"), and Will Lee (“Sesame Street”).

This may not be Finn-ished at all. We have no choice but to find a new actor/singer, who is born in 1985 or early 1986, to play Finn Hudson immediately.

Whoever those three people, that approached to Cory, were acting cooperative, but they did not tell him that they were considered drug-dealers. They may have tricked him putting heroin in either his food or drink because they know that Cory has extreme weaknesses in himself.

We need to go after those three and investigate deeper in them, quickly.

Coroner: Cory Monteith Died of Intravenous Heroin Use and Alcohol

The late "Glee" star Cory Monteith died of a mixed drug cocktail involving "intravenous heroin use combined with the ingestion of alcohol."

That finding was part of the final B.C. Coroner's report on the July 13 death of the Hollywood actor in Vancouver that had previously been ruled accidental.





The final report, made public Wednesday, goes into additional detail, including indicating Monteith was found dead in his room at the Fairmont Pacific Rim hotel shortly after noon on July 13. He was 31.

"He had checked in to the hotel on July 6 and had been expected to check out on the 13th. When he had not done so, hotel staff checked his room and found him unresponsive on the floor. Investigators on the scene found drug paraphernalia in Monteith's presence, including a spoon with drug residue and a used hypodermic needle, along with two empty champagne bottles and glasses. At the time of his death, Monteith had an alcohol level of 0.13 percent, with a moderate level of intoxication."

The report also pointed to the presence of morphine, codeine and "6-monoacetylmorphine," a metabolite of heroin.





The coroner's investigation added the hotel video captured Monteith returning alone to his room at 2:16 a.m. on July 13, which marked the final time the actor was seen alive.

The coroner's report also confirmed that Monteith had a "history of illicit drug use," with periodic stints in rehab, followed by staying off drugs for periods years or months in duration.

The report also confirmed what others had speculated previously, that abstinence from using opioids, including heroin, for a period of time lessens tolerance to the toxicity of the deadly drug.
