View Full Version : It was evident that $20.00 was a lot of money in 1976 because there is no way in hell
TVFactFan 07-13-2013, 11:11 AM Three people could eat out in 2013 with only $20.00.
In the episode JJ in Trouble it was stated that $20 was left for the kids to use for emergencies but JJ wanted to use it to eat out.
Today $20 would only be enough for barely one person to eat out on. lol
Zoneboy 07-13-2013, 01:11 PM 3 people can easily eat out today on $20 although probably only at a fast-food or pizza place.

$20.00 will not allow 3 people to eat at a fast food restaurant. Maybe 2 but definitely not 3

That depends on where you go...
Pizza Hut - 2 large pizzas with any toppings = $20 (when promotion is on)
McDonalds and not just the dollar menu
Taco Bell
Subway - 3 six-inch subs and drinks
These are only examples and I'm sure that if 3 people only had $20 between them and were hungry enough that they would find a way to stretch it.

At McDonald's, you are not spending less than $7.00 per person for dinner.
Now maybe for breakfast since it's a lot cheaper at $5.00 per person

If you use the dollar* value items you could. I used to do that all the time. But I haven't been in a fast food joint for a while, so those "dollar" values are probably more like $1.50 now.
So...I think 3 people could eat for $20 (outside of Manhattan anyways) - they'd just have to be creative!

Three people with something to eat and drink not likely. Then you have to add in the tax lol

It can be done...
Each person could get 2 sandwiches an order of fries, a drink and a sundae from the dollar menu for $15 plus tax
They could get 3 #1's which is the Big Mac meal deal for less than $20
3 20-piece mcnuggets and 3 small drinks is also less than $20. This is better if McDonalds is doing their all drink sizes for a dollar promotion
More can be saved if coupons are applied

Exactly! It really isn't that hard; especially outside of NYC.
gilligan fanatic 07-14-2013, 09:14 AM It's the drinks that make it expensive, even soft drinks. Took a date out last week with tip it was $22. And we ate at a diner.

And the Taxes:lol:
In the words of roger thomas................"I don't want the tax"
Brieannas21 07-14-2013, 05:57 PM You could go to McDonald's and get 2 #2's and that could feed 3 people add an med drink and you'll still have change left out of that $20.
Zoneboy 07-14-2013, 06:14 PM If you're really desperate there's always Little Caesars. :D

I don't think JJ was talking about one meal, he was referring to breakfast, lunch and dinner which is why I said $20 was a lot in 1976

Of course it was, that is why the other day I told you that James' $15 raise was a lot of money. The dollar went a long way back in the day.
I can remember going to the store when I was little and getting a carton of Jungle Juice for 50¢, now that same juice will cost you $2.50 and it don't even taste the same.

$20 in 1976 is the equivalent to $81.88 in 2013. The cumulative rate of inflation change is 309.4%. I used this inflation calculator (http://www.usinflationcalculator.com/) to get these figures.

Even in NYC, you can eat at McDonalds with that amount for three people. you can also go to the food court over here at my local mall and eat with that along with some other fast food and Chinese food spots.
PumasNFatlaces 07-27-2016, 01:15 AM Hate to dig up old threads but TV Fact.... You in a college area and you know prices get jacked with kids and their parents disposable cash. LOL.
TVFactFan 07-27-2016, 06:42 PM My mom told me today that in 1976
prices were lower
companies paid more
pkripper001 07-27-2016, 07:32 PM $2.30 was the minimum wage in 1976.
You could of got 9 McDonald hamburgers & a complementary glass of ice water for each person with you,
for an hours work back then.
So 3 hamburgers per person.
Janice Johnson 09-23-2016, 09:05 AM I don't know why they didn't just SPLIT the $20. $10 for food, $10 for emergencies! There's a shocking idea! :p
Tap Dancer 10-08-2016, 12:53 PM At Burger King, I always order a cheeseburger and small fries (with a free cup of water because I don't drink soda). It costs $3.07 after tax. If I was with 2 other people and they ordered the same, we could all eat for less than $10. You don't have to eat like a greedy pig when you go out.

That would depend how close you are to Burger King. If you are not close then you may not be able feed 3 people for $20.00 at other places

I'm about 4 minutes away. ;) I live close to a lot of restaurants.

I was thinking about Mcdonald's because it was the place that JJ always mentioned and thinking how in 2016 I can spend $11 on dinner for just me.

I can't stomach McDonald's food. If I did eat there, I'd either get a cheeseburger or the smallest McNuggets and small fries. I'm sure it would also be under $4. Again, fast food doesn't have to be expensive unless you get large meals.
Nordy 10-08-2016, 06:02 PM Just get a Taco Grande Meal at Taco Bell for $12...lol
Janice Johnson 10-08-2016, 10:46 PM Why not do the "Buy once, eat twice thing?" You can buy a burger, fries, and a drink, and just eat half the burger, half the fries, and drink half the soda. You just ordered lunch and dinner one just one transaction. :p
ChicagoGuy 01-21-2017, 10:00 PM $20 in 1970's is about $80 today. Plenty for a poor black family to eat with.
