Growing up in the 80's, if you would have told me that the star of Bosom Buddies, the Dragnet remake, Splash, and Turner and Hooch would end up being a multiple Oscar award winner I would have recommended a stay in the looney bin. I just wonder who will be the next "surprise".

Yeah that's a bit of a toughey, there are many more people in the entertainment industry now than in the 1980's and many more growing each year that there currently isn't a stand out actor in the likes of a Tom Hanks.
