I always find it sad that Cliff Huxtable is always at the top of those greatest t.v. dad's lists and Carl is usually nowhere to be found.

All Cliff did on the Cosby Show was bitch about wanting his children to move out of the house and joke about abusing and killing his kids. He was also incredibly cheap for such a rich person and would usually go off on a long tirade whenever they wanted something. Cliff also spent too much time sucking up to that idiot father of his.

I thought Carl was a far superior Dad, he was merry to be around and look at how many people he took in: Rachel, Richie, Gramma, 3J and essentially Steve. He was a father figure to Steve and put up with all his crap because Urkel was essentially neglected at home. Was a cop that cleaned up the tough streets of Chicago, helped Eddie out in many tough situations, wasn't too strict or too lenient, and was real funny and just an all around great person. Carl was the type of Dad every kid wanted to have, not Cliff Huxtable. I'd rather be middle class and happy than rich and miserable.

I totally agree with you. Carl and Harriette were so much cooler than Cliff and Claire.

I agree. I just watched the 7th episode of the Cosby Show and the 5th episode of Family Matters yesterday (I had seen the latter before). Talk about your stark contrasts. Cliff spent the whole episode bitching about not wanting any more children and not even wanting some of the ones he had. Meanwhile, on Family Matters, it was the one where Rodney gave out those fake report cards with All A's and made it look like Eddie got straight A's. When Carl found out the truth, he told his son that he was proud of him for telling the truth and still having his best report card (2 B's and 3 C's). I thought it was a great moment.

I agree. Don't get me wrong, I love Cliff but I think Carl and a lot of other TV dads are better than him. I think him and The Cosby Show in general is way overrated.

I agree, Carl was a great dad. He was always my favorite Family Matters character next to Waldo.

Yeah. I think Family Matters is far superior to the Cosby Show in every way. It had better characters, better actors, better writing, better jokes, better emotional moments.

One of my favorite Family Matters episode was an earlier one where Carl spends the whole episode bothered by something. Turns out, it was the anniversary of when he responded to a call at a convenience store robbery. And old man who was a customer at the store was shot and killed by the robber. Carl goes to the man's grave where he meets the widow. Carl states he replayed the situation many times over in his mind and wishes he could find that one moment where he could have saved him. The widow says she knows how he feels and that she wished she hadn't sent him out for ice cream that night. Eventually they both realize that it was nobody's fault but the robbers. Very touching scene.

What did the Cosby show have? An episode where Cliff gives birth to a hoagie. Ridicilous.

Indeed, while I like "The Cosby show" too, "Family Matters" is funnier, and it was better at making touching episodes, and even fantasy episodes. I don't think anybody enjoyed seeing Cliff dreaming about the men giving birth to stuff!

I liked Cosby's other show better. The one from the late 90's with Madeline Kahn and Doug E. Doug. That was way funnier than Cosby Show.

I agree. I wish THAT show would make it to DVD. I love Madeline Kahn!

I just watched the "Father's Day" episode of the Cosby Show and Cliff spent the entire episode bitching about how he didn't like the Father's Day gifts his family got him throughout the years. OMG, who does this? Talk about rude and unappreciative. He made the family get him presents because I guess being rich and getting gifts for Christmas and his birthday just wasn't *quite* enough. Carl Winslow would never do anything like that.

This was also the episode where Rudy picked her nose and wiped her boogers on her clothes.

The episode did have one thing going for it: Continunity. A few episodes previous, Cliff was talking about this very distinctive tie that Theo had gotten him. And lo and behold, it appears in this ep.

I loved that episode. It was funny seeing the men pregnant and the women enjoying it. That is the only one I'll collect. I agree that Family Matters was way supierior than The Cosby Show. The Cosby Show is one of the most overrated shows on tv. I can't stomach it today.

Was that in the script? It's been quite a few years since I've seen that episode and I don't remember that part.

I don't remember that either. But while it might be a thing, that a little kid could do, it sounds really gross.

I'm sure it wasn't in the script. Cliff was on the sofa talking while Rudy and Theo were sitting on a chair to the left of the screen. It was towards the end of the episode during the gift presentation. She picks her nose, wipes it on her clothes several times. One time she did it, she immediately put her hand on Cosby afterwards. I'm surprised nobody in editing or whatever caught this.

Maybe Rudy had been watching "The Gross Out Gang." I found the "Father's Day" episode on youtube. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_c45Pinl5o GROSS OUT ALERT starting at 20:11. Sheesh!

You're right. It was kind of subtle though. Maybe I wouldn't even have thought about it unless someone had pointed it out.

I love in the opening credits how Carl has a big smile on his face, carrying a book in his right hand. I always imagined he just got done taking a good dump in the toilet. Heck, look at the picture above this thread. Carl has the biggest smile out of anyone.
