Even though you may disagree, and some of you most definitely will, there doesn't seem to be much debate over what have been the three best television shows of the past decade, The Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad.

The three fit together in a seamless fashion: Two from HBO that are now redundant, and one from AMC that is very much alive. All of the three excellent options use nonlinear narratives with minimal experimentation. Undeniably, there have been moments of pure quality television during the past 10 years, step forward Entourage and Caifornication, but these three shows have been the greatest(and by a considerably large margin).

We all agree that taste is subjective, but the considerable harmony surrounding these three gems is so prevalent that it feels like an objective fact. I am aware that this entire opening paragraph is an amazingly monotonous argument to make publicly. However, there’s nothing wrong with feeling the need to praise something that truly deserves praise, until, not surprisingly, you imply that one of these shows is superior to the other two. Then, my friends, furious fists begin to fly.

TV has always been a deeply personal experience, existing inside your home, a source of tailored comfort. It is also entirely universal, existing inside everyone’s home; viewers depend on its service with an abnormal variety of ferocity. Whether it is Tony Soprano or Walter White, we all develop loyalties to certain characters and feel offended when those loyalties are criticized. Although most serious TV viewers take pleasure in (or at least value) all three shows, they normally feel a genuine obligation to promote the superiority of whichever show they appreciate the most.

This undeniable truth is extremely strong among advocates of The Wire. Never has there been a more tenacious fan base than that of the hit HBO show. We are talking about a secular cult that simply refuses to entertain any argument that doesn't accept The Wire as the greatest creative undertaking in television history. I firmly believe that some of these people secretly believe this show really happened, and that questioning the story-line is like questioning the authenticity of a CNN report. Newsflash, you are not qualified to lecture on urban-city education because you happen to own the box-set. As a member of society, you must learn to accept this, move on, it’s over.

Now, hold on, I am not saying that The Wire wasn't exceptional, because it was. Of the three shows I've mentioned, The Wire clearly had the finest writing. But, after much deliberation, I've reached the conclusion that Breaking Bad is the best TV show I have ever seen. What are the reasons for feeling this way?
