Why don't you hear much about this guy after Full House? Bob Saget and (to a lesser extent) John Stamos were both able to reinvent themselves, but it seems like Dave just fell off the face of the earth.

I do agree w/ the notion that part of the reason why Dave perhaps didn't have a longer live-action acting career (and maybe gotten his own sitcom) is because people more than likely figured out the redundancy of his schtick (i.e. cute little impressions/old and classic cartoon voices). Maybe had Dave evolved his humor so to speak, he would've had more longevity (assuming of course, he wanted to go down that path).

You can also make the argument that Dave's stand-up comedic style and/or persona may come across as a bit too "nice" (it didn't help due to Full House's reputation of being a very cheesy, cornball TGIF show) in today's environment.

It wasn't too long ago when a comedian had to work clean to make his or her way to Johnny Carson's couch on "The Tonight Show" set. Dave Coulier's act is Carson clean, and he says audiences hunger for jokes the whole family can hear. It's why the "Full House" star is behind "Clean Guys of Comedy," a new, one-night special coming to more than 660 theaters Sept. 19 and 26.

I applaud Dave Coulier for making an effort to keep his comedy clean- there are some comedians out there in this category (Sinbad and Mark Curry also come to mind)- and I definitely appreciate it. Good for Dave on getting his "Clean Guys of Comedy" special to theaters.:) :cool:
(And of course, I love "Full House" too- he'll always be known for that.)

Who's going to shell out money to see Coulier do standup when they could just watch reruns of Full House where he basically does his schtick on there?

It's kind of ironic that he chose to keep his act clean while Bob Sagat's act relies on filth and trash. I have more respect for Dave now as well.

I think that I said a long time ago, that I don't think that Bob Saget when you get right down to it, is really that good or impressive of a comedian. It's not just because of or necessarily due to his association w/ Full House. Bob Saget's whole stand-up act seems constitute him trying to be as vulgar and profane as possible. If you had no pretext of his more raunchy persona (and all you recognize him from is from a cornball family sitcom like FH), then that sort of humor is really only funny once (just for shock and absurdity value alone). Unfortunately, after a while, you actually have to tell jokes, if that makes enough sense.

While this may be true, the same can be said for Dave. Yeah, he keeps his comedy clean, but at the same time it is called comedy so it should also be funny. I went to see him several years back, basically for nostalgic reasons, and his entire set was just ridiculous. I tried really hard to like it but it was just bad.

Unfortunately, comedy is subjective. There is no hard and fast rule for what is objectively funny or else everyone would be a popular comedian.

Full House was a cheesy enough show as it was—the last thing the show’s creators needed was to cast somebody who added even more cheese. And yet that’s just what happened, with standup comedian (or rather, “standup comedian”) Dave Coulier playing standup comedian (once again, “standup comedian”), Uncle Joey. Tragically, Joey’s sense of humor was Coulier’s: cheesy, corny, and designed to be as light-PG as humanly possible. There were tons of other comedians who could’ve re-written Joey’s jokes as better, funnier, more interesting, and still clean enough to keep the show family-friendly, but nobody figured that out in time. There’s a very good reason Coulier’s done virtually nothing since Full House ended, but John Stamos and Bob Saget keep getting work.

P.S. I always loved it when he laughed at Jesse. I love when he tried to teach Jesse how to play golf in season three and he was like, "Jess? Elvis never made one golf movie." :D :D :D
