"It's sort of sad to see the show just drifting listlessly from shocking event to shocking event," says Ta-Nehisi Coates. "It points to a lack of actual things to say about actual human beings." He adds: "Increasingly the magical '60s and a crumbling New York have become a crutch for 'Mad Men.'"

I think the show jumped ship when Don and Betty separated. Since then, it has just been slowly spiraling out of control, but the spiral has picked up speed since the middle of last season. It feels as though the show has written itself into a box, like they don't know where to go next. This season has been painfully dull. I really can't imagine another season of the same thing.

Maybe so, but even since Don and Betty split up, the show has had some of its best episodes since then. This season is pretty slow and definately different, but this is a still a great show in my book and i'm always anxious to see what each episode brings. I love watching an episode and being able to think about it for days after on everything it was trying to say. :)
Maybe they think we need a free history lesson. ;)

"Among the signs of artistic growth that mark the show's sixth season as its best to date," he says, "is that it is has stopped using the past as a crutch to prop up its scenarios."
