Watching these episodes lately on TV One. Nell and Chief both do a great job being parental figures. Even though, Nell is just a housekeeper, she's a mother figure as well. When the problem are solved at the closing of each episode, Nell and Chief seem like they could make a couple with the girls bringing them together. You could tell the Chief really respects Nell and Nell really cares for the Chief. Call me crazy, but I see this! lol

You have made a lot of interesting points in your thread. Now, as far as being a couple, a lot of people have offered the same idea with Tony and Angela from "Who's the Boss". How do you think that one would have worked out?

I think Tony and Angela should have gotten together. Didn't Tony say "I love you" to Angela

They should have married them off in the last episode but the writers blew it. They were a couple during the last season though.

I am so happy to finally see some conversation being stimulated after all of this time!

Gimmie a Breaks been on TV One. A show being aired generates conversation. I didn't come here to this board because I hadn't seen the show in ages

I still wonder if the director pulled a Darrin (Having someone else play the chief while Dolph Sweet was undergoing treatment) and the Chief would marry Nell in a proper finale?

That may be some good fan fiction here.

That would have never happened. The Chief was years older than Nell. He wasn't her type. They argued a lot. But they did love each other as friends.

Remember in season 3 "Grandpa's Rebellion" when Nell got the Chief and Grandpa to like one another.

"I love you, Nell." "I'm gonna hug you, Nell"

"Get away from me!"

Then she tried setting him up with Melissa.

So no, Nell and the Chief would have never been more than friends. I think eventually, had he never passed, they could have had a different season 5 and 6 and even 7/8. The show was very good in season 3/4. I bet it would not have gone totally downhill had he never gotten cancer.

I think had he lived, he would have gotten a steady girlfriend in season 5. We never saw him with anyone EXCEPT Marion in season 1, and a date he had for Valentine's in season 3 and Melissa in season 3 (who was a guy who had a sex change). Season 4 he was alone. I think had he lived the series would have done this:

Season 5:

The Chief finds out about Julie/Jonathan
The Chief meetts new girlfriend
The Chief goes on dates throughout the season
New stories/maybe some same from season 5 originally but w Chief, too
The show pulls the same thing Mr. Drummond did when he married Maggie
The Chief marries his girlfriend
Julie gets pregnant (at the end of this season)

THE SHOW JUMPS THE SHARK

Season 6:

Sam goes to Glenlawn Community College
Episodes focusing on Julie being pregnant all season
New stories that wouldn't have happened originally as the show went to NY
Most likely Katie getting married this season
Julie giving birth to a baby. Maybe not even Baby Nell.

Season 7:

Stories that center around Julie's baby
Nell and Addy finally getting married to boyfriends of theirs
Sam gets a steady boyfriend, maybe marries as well

I don't think the show would have gone past a 7th/8th season had the Chief still been alive. I think it would have lasted into 1987-1988 and latest 1988-1989. The show would not have lasted to see 1989-1990 season. The 80s were over at this point. I think 1988-1989 would have been good because Diff'rent Strokes went off in 1986, Facts Of life in 1988, and GAB was the youngest show, it should have gotten a 7th or even 8th season had the Chief lived.

I think the show would have been a mix of Diff'rent Strokes/Full House in their later seasons, had the Chief lived. I really think he would have been paired with someone at some point and they would have totally done a "Mr. Drummond" treatment on him, but I doubt the girlfriend would have had kids. The show had enough people, and Joey was only 9/10 in seasons 5 and 6. Had the show gone on 4 seasons more after season 4, Joey would have been 12. He would have still been young, the age Sam was at first when the show started.

I recently discovered this wonderful show was playing on TV1 where i live and I'm loving it! I agree on your points and I wouldn't have seen the harm in having them at least explore their feelings for each other. They did a great job at co-parenting, even though Nell isn't their biological mother. If anythig they seem to be darn good friends.

90% of the time marrying characters on a show - unless they are married from the start- is a sign of a show in trouble. They could have done it with Tony and Angela since it was known the show was cancelled but with Dolph Sweet's health issues it would have been tougher here. The "Moonlighting" curse is very much alive in the minds of TV producers. The old "Jump the Shark" site used to list get married and or "do it" as shark jump.

Even though I really have nothing to add to this particular conversation, I am very happy to see things starting up again after this page seemed like a dead zone for so long! I wish that I could think of a topic that other posters would think was worthy of a reply!

I am not sure what exactly you are saying is too bad. Are you saying that it is too bad that I have not been successful in stimulating any conversation? In any event, I see that today is your first day as a member of this community. Welcome aboard! i Hope you enjoy it!

Just thought I asked...but I feel that Nell Carter was good friends with the cast...or so it seemed (I also felt that when Dolph Sweet died, a piece of Nell carter died and she took cocaine to relieve the pain at the time).

And funny you said "Full House", Kari Michaelsen DID make a cameo as Stacie in the episode "Joey, Stacie, and...oh yeah...Jesse".

It's a good ep.
