Matt Smith Exiting "Doctor Who"
Jun 1, 2013
by Robyn Ross
The Doctor is out on "Doctor Who".
Matt Smith, who plays the title role in the BBC series, will make his exit at the end of the year after starring in the show's 50th anniversary 3D special on Nov. 23 and the annual Christmas special, when he will regenerate.
"Doctor Who has been the most brilliant experience for me as an actor and a bloke, and that largely is down to the cast, crew and fans of the show," Smith said in a statement. "I'm incredibly grateful to all the cast and crew who work tirelessly every day, to realise all the elements of the show and deliver Doctor Who to the audience.
It's been an honour to play this part, to follow the legacy of brilliant actors, and helm the TARDIS for a spell with 'the ginger, the nose and the impossible one.' But when ya gotta go, ya gotta go and Trenzalore calls. Thank you guys. Matt."
Added executive producer Steven Moffat:
"This isn't the end of the story, because now the search begins. Somewhere out there right now - all unknowing, just going about their business - is someone who's about to become The Doctor. A life is going to change, and Doctor Who will be born all over again! After 50 years, that's still so exciting!"
Last month, "Doctor Who" was renewed for an eighth season.

This recast will be pivotal to the show's future more than most if not all others. A bad choice could be disastrous.

Matt Smith will be departing Doctor Who in this year’s Christmas Special. Quite frankly I’m gutted.
Of course I get that Doctor Who is always about change. Feeling this way about a departing Doctor is something all fans should feel. I was also gutted when David Tennant announced that he was leaving after the 2009 specials. And even though it was (rather stupidly) announced that Christopher Ecclestone was leaving at the start of his one and only series, by the time Bad Wolf and Parting Of The Ways came on our screens, I was sad to see him go. I can only imagine how fans of Classic Who felt with the passing of each Doctor, something I have only experienced through an immensely enjoyable three years retrospective viewing of all the old doctors.
But you know what, Matt Smith’s departure is worse for me than David Tennant’s. Both were excellent Doctors with some amazing stories, who had/have the capacity to make even the weaker ones light up with their presence. But looking back over David Tennant’s story arc, I can now say that I think he achieved everything he needed to do as the Doctor. His rebirth from the battle-scarred Ninth Doctor. The expansion of his companion ‘family’ culminating in that great scene of them all flying the Tardis in Journey’s End. His eventual steps towards isolation and the fateful confrontation with John Simm’s Master and the Time Lord legacy he destroyed in The End Of Time. As sad as it was to see him go, the Tenth’s Doctor story had reached its conclusion.
Now for me, the Eleventh Doctor has so much more to give. He wiped any feeling of loss over David Tennant in the opening moments of his first story, The Eleventh Hour with the excellent fish custard scene. He has had great chemistry with all his companions and recurring cast members. And some cracking story arcs. I’ve loved every appearance of him on screen.
Also, maybe it’s just me, but I don’t want a regeneration in the Christmas Special. For me, the grimness of the Tenth’s oncoming regeneration made The End Of Time the most depressing of the Christmas specials…something I’m not looking for over the Christmas holidays. I would much have preferred if Matt Smith has announced he would be in series 8 and then regenerated two or three episodes in. THAT would have knocked it out of the park. And maybe, there are still some surprises in store for us. And maybe, there will be a scene ten minutes into the opening of series 8 where we think Matt Smith who?
But that doesn’t take away from the fact that I’m gutted about his departure. This article looks at why I feel Matt Smith’s eleventh doctor has been an amazing Doctor (my favourite of them all) and why his departure will be a great loss to Doctor Who. Feel free to comment below. That’s the great thing about Doctor Who. Everyone has his or her favourites. Maybe you’re as gutted about his departure as I am. Or maybe you’re ready for change? Let me know!

Matt Smith is my favorite Doctor and I am sad to see him go, I still haven't even gotten over them killing off Amy Pond yet. I think that they have just had too much transition in too short a time.
