View Full Version : Mama's Family -- New DVD Releases JWLJN 10-07-2013, 04:25 PM Was it always (and I mean ALWAYS) like that? Yes, the dubbed Vicki line has always been in the Courteous Crook ep. -J\/\/ tlc38tlc38 10-07-2013, 09:17 PM "Singin' in the Rain" is on season 2 of The Muppet Show so it has been cleared before. I'm not sure why TL couldn't get it for this set. '80sSitcoms 10-07-2013, 10:40 PM Maybe TL could but the holders didn't want it to be affiliated with Mama's Family. Sometimes it's just personal taste with the holders to whether they allow it or not. stevea 10-08-2013, 02:39 PM I've discovered another music edit. The song in part 2 of the Hawaii episode when Mama goes searching for her Aloha Hula Lamp (the one that "winds down" to show how exhausted she is) has been replaced. Everybody hang onto your TBS copies! I have 'em S3-S6--now that I have the S1 and S2 sets, I wish I had TBS for those, too! justegofficial 10-08-2013, 09:10 PM Unfortunately, I've discovered some more edits/missing footage. On my website, I listed 9 episodes from Season 2 that didn't include Harvey Korman/Alistair Quince introductions, but I assumed since they had the original NBC openings, those episodes just must have not included any (originally). Well, upon rewatching those 9 episodes, I've discovered if you pause the DVD right after an episode starts playing and go frame-by-frame, you can see - in 5 of the 9 episodes - a glimpse of Harvey Korman/Alistair Quince from an introduction that used to be there but isn't now. The 9 episodes without introductions are: Mama Learns to Drive, Black Belt Mama, Mama Buys a Car, Supermarket, No Room At the Inn, Mama for Mayor (1), Mama for Mayor (2), Mama's Birthday and Mama Cries Uncle. The 5 episodes where you can see a glimpse of the tail end of an introduction that isn't there anymore are: Mama Learns to Drive, Supermarket, Mama for Mayor (1), Mama for Mayor (2) and Mama's Birthday. I don't know about the other 4 episodes, though. If you go frame by frame on those, there aren't any remnants of a cut introduction, but it could have just been edited better than the other 5. I wonder why the introductions were cut and what happened to them. It wouldn't have been on Time Life/StarVista's end, I wouldn't think. Vahan 10-08-2013, 10:44 PM Those cuts must have been from when NBC reaired the episodes in 1985, which resulted in the series coming back to Syndication. ahafan02 10-09-2013, 09:42 PM I had a sad feeling watching the very last two episodes...it's a shame the show ended...can u imagine 2-3 more seasons raising little Tiffany Thelma. tlc38tlc38 10-12-2013, 10:04 AM "I Feel Pretty" was cleared for the 4th season of Ellen. It's in the episode "Give Me Equity or Give Me Death". I'm thinking the reason some of these songs have been cleared in the past is because the rights holders weren't as picky a few years back when TV on DVD began. Now that it's more popular, they demand more money or they just don't want it in anything. justegofficial 10-12-2013, 10:55 PM "I Feel Pretty" was cleared for the 4th season of Ellen. I'm thinking the reason some of these songs have been cleared in the past is because the rights holders weren't as picky a few years back when TV on DVD began. Now that it's more popular, they demand more money or they just don't want it in anything. It was also cleared for the Friends episode "The One With Chandler's Dad." Kathleen Turner who plays Chandler's dad, sings it in his Las Vegas drag show. I wonder if older shows didn't pay the rights holders as much to license a song for an episode a long time ago? This was the time when variety shows were on and music was used A LOT in TV shows (WKRP was in the early 80's, The Wonder Years was in the later 80's). If that's the case, maybe they're trying to make up for not getting paid by those shows as much then as they would have gotten upfront nowadays by charging more for them now for use on their DVDs? tlc38tlc38 10-31-2013, 09:33 PM The song "Happy Days Are Here Again" was cleared for the recently released season 4 of "Alice" in the episode Carrie Sharples Strikes Again. ahafan02 10-31-2013, 09:43 PM The song "Happy Days Are Here Again" was cleared for the recently released season 4 of "Alice" in the episode Carrie Sharples Strikes Again. Different publishers charge different fees for various songs...some are more expensive than others...it's highly possible StarVista couldn't afford some of these songs. Penny Lane 11-14-2013, 03:33 PM I just today received Mama's Family season 2 and I am happy to report that "Gert Rides Again" is included! I never knew that TBS skipped it. tlc38tlc38 01-20-2014, 12:31 AM I'm beginning to wonder if the reason they couldn't get the rights to "Happy Days Are Here Again" is because they changed the words and title to "Harper Days Are Here Again". The reason I think this is because I've seen this song on lots of other TV shows on DVD. Most recently it was released on the season 3 set of "Family Matters"---it was in the episode "Woman of the People". quincywagstaff 01-27-2014, 07:59 PM I'm beginning to wonder if the reason they couldn't get the rights to "Happy Days Are Here Again" is because they changed the words and title to "Harper Days Are Here Again". The rights holders may not have approved of changing the lyrics at any price. stevea 02-11-2014, 03:40 PM It was reported today on TVShowsOnDVD.com that Star-Vista is going to release a Wonder Years DVD set, painstakingly seeing that virtually all original music is licensed (and with this show there was a LOT of original music...Beatles, etc.!), so that the series can be released as originally shown. Hey guys...why didn't you do that with Mama? If you can license the Beatles, surely you can clear Mama singing Harper Days are Here Again! Boy, I wish I had taped season 2 off TBS! MikeLutton 02-11-2014, 04:03 PM bit off topic but to a point can u imagine if Happy days cut blueberry hill song off its dvds due to license one of it top songs. Chocolate Moose 02-11-2014, 04:30 PM Look at this nice long thread! Just sharing that I got Season 1 from the library today! wiseguy182 03-10-2014, 12:52 AM One reason I believe the lost episodes exist is the because the episode titles sound like ones they would come up with. "Snow Job", "Play Ball!", "Wedding Presence", "Raytown Without Pity" and "Bubba's Photo Class" all sound like episode titles the writers would actually come up with. It's very common for them to use catchy titles, play on words, etc., which is what these are. The post on here from somebody who was describing an episode where it snowed sounds like it could be "Snow Job" quincywagstaff 03-10-2014, 07:28 PM Before they released the DVDs, Time-Life was asked the question about the existence of these 5 phantom episodes; they checked with Warner and the Joe Hamilton estate and the answer they were given was that there are no missing episodes. I'm sure this won't change anyone's mind on this subject if they really want to believe they exist, but those are the facts. If only he would have the decency to take me off of his ignore list, I would be able to tell him how I can prove to him, beyond a shadow of a doubt, that there were no episodes of Mama's Family that were taped but never shown, and that yeahyadda was not telling the truth at all. Come on, Wiseguy182. Please, take me off your ignore list. I apologize for everything I have sad to you. wiseguy182 03-15-2014, 12:50 AM It should be noted that the only episode of Soul Man (the late 90s Dan Aykroyd sitcom) is also entitled "Play Ball!" How ironic that 2 episodes of 2 different shows I need would have the same title! Vahan 03-15-2014, 01:19 AM It should be noted that the only episode of Soul Man (the late 90s Dan Aykroyd sitcom) is also entitled "Play Ball!" How ironic that 2 episodes of 2 different shows I need would have the same title! Sigh. You don't need the MF episode of "Play Ball!", because there is no episode like that! It is not uncommon for TV shows to have scripted but unfilmed episodes. Those five episodes that you claim exist may have been scripted, but I doubt they were ever filmed. You are doing nothing but deluding yourself in believing the people who said that there were five taped-but-never-shown episodes. Folks, I have had it up to here with him. It seems like nothing I say or do is gonna convince him otherwise. And he had the audacity, the nerve, to put me on his ignore list. wiseguy182 04-27-2014, 01:10 AM It should be noted that the only episode of Soul Man (the late 90s Dan Aykroyd sitcom) is also entitled "Play Ball!" Very strange and it makes me wonder if there is a small chance that these lost episodes of Mama's Family don't exist after all. Fin-freakin-ly, you're starting to admit that these so-called "taped but never shown episodes" of MF do not really exist, at all. Now will you please take me off of ignore? tlc38tlc38 04-14-2015, 04:09 PM I'm thankful to Time-Life for releasing the complete series set but in a way I wish Shout! Factory would've released it. I've noticed several songs that Time-Life couldn't secure the rights to, Shout! Factory has been able to in some of their recent sets. "I Feel Pretty" was cut from a "Mama's Family" episode but it is intact in an episode of "Maude". stevea 01-26-2016, 03:59 PM I watched the 2 part Mama becoming mayor episodes on DVD, and the missing "Harper Days Are Here Again" really ruins it for me! They couldn't license that old music? Come on...that's 5 minutes of the first episode! Question (since I don't have a computer at home): Is there a way to combine the MeTV episodes with the DVD episodes to get complete episodes? Has anyone tried that? Vahan 01-26-2016, 04:08 PM Currently, the only trace of the original broadcast of "Cellmates" is the commercial for it. iWWs_0Avi6I '80sSitcoms 01-26-2016, 05:05 PM Currently, the only trace of the original broadcast of "Cellmates" is the commercial for it. But there's nothing "new" in the preview; that brief footage is already in the syndicated cut. I thought from your post there was a sliver of the "lost" footage in the show. However, Mama talking right to the viewer at the end is cute worth the watch. Thanks for the share. likewow 01-27-2016, 06:15 PM I remember editing together the syndicated reruns of shows like Mary Tyler Moore and Designing Women with the cable versions, ala Nick at Nite and Lifetime, to get full episodes. It's possible to combine reruns and DVD footage, except most DVDs are copy protected. MC 10-24-2017, 07:01 PM Last week at Walmart, I found "Mama's Family-The Complete Series" for $39.96, which I thought was a good deal... All of the other episodes are in intact as far as I can see. Again, I'm wondering if that scene was cut because of the song.(copyright , royalties etc.)? The "Singing in the Rain" cut was indeed due to rights issues, as were the "Harper Days are Here Again" montage from "Mama for Mayor", and the "Ain't Misbehaving" number that Vicky Lawrence and Imogene Coca sing in "Aunt Gert". There are also about 7 other very minor cuts made in other episodes. When the box sets first came out about five years ago, Time-Life gave a list of all the cuts made because they couldn't clear all of the 100+ pieces of music that were used in MF. I just found Mama's Family The Complete Collection on ebay new for less than $40. I just received it in the mail today and I'm wondering if it's counterfeit. This is the version with just the 6 individual seasons, no extras. But the Mama's Family logo on the front of the box looks kinda blurry. Does anyone have this set and can confirm if this is normal? I have't removed the shrinkwrap yet. Thanks! DakotaAtokad 10-04-2019, 10:59 AM I can confirm that the set is legit from WB. It's rather cheap, and kind of sloppy. It spans 15 discs. Season 1 is literally a copy and paste of the 2006 release, while seasons 3-6 seem to be mastered from the same source as iTunes. My only complaint (aside from the horrible packaging) is that it does indeed seem like they've converted the original 30fps to 24fps resulting in some jittery motion. |
