"Singin' in the Rain" is on season 2 of The Muppet Show so it has been cleared before. I'm not sure why TL couldn't get it for this set.

Maybe TL could but the holders didn't want it to be affiliated with Mama's Family. Sometimes it's just personal taste with the holders to whether they allow it or not.

I've discovered another music edit. The song in part 2 of the Hawaii episode when Mama goes searching for her Aloha Hula Lamp (the one that "winds down" to show how exhausted she is) has been replaced.

Unfortunately, I've discovered some more edits/missing footage.

On my website, I listed 9 episodes from Season 2 that didn't include Harvey Korman/Alistair Quince introductions, but I assumed since they had the original NBC openings, those episodes just must have not included any (originally).

Well, upon rewatching those 9 episodes, I've discovered if you pause the DVD right after an episode starts playing and go frame-by-frame, you can see - in 5 of the 9 episodes - a glimpse of Harvey Korman/Alistair Quince from an introduction that used to be there but isn't now.

The 9 episodes without introductions are: Mama Learns to Drive, Black Belt Mama, Mama Buys a Car, Supermarket, No Room At the Inn, Mama for Mayor (1), Mama for Mayor (2), Mama's Birthday and Mama Cries Uncle.

The 5 episodes where you can see a glimpse of the tail end of an introduction that isn't there anymore are: Mama Learns to Drive, Supermarket, Mama for Mayor (1), Mama for Mayor (2) and Mama's Birthday. I don't know about the other 4 episodes, though. If you go frame by frame on those, there aren't any remnants of a cut introduction, but it could have just been edited better than the other 5.

I wonder why the introductions were cut and what happened to them. It wouldn't have been on Time Life/StarVista's end, I wouldn't think.

Those cuts must have been from when NBC reaired the episodes in 1985, which resulted in the series coming back to Syndication.

I had a sad feeling watching the very last two episodes...it's a shame the show ended...can u imagine 2-3 more seasons raising little Tiffany Thelma.

I wonder if older shows didn't pay the rights holders as much to license a song for an episode a long time ago? This was the time when variety shows were on and music was used A LOT in TV shows (WKRP was in the early 80's, The Wonder Years was in the later 80's). If that's the case, maybe they're trying to make up for not getting paid by those shows as much then as they would have gotten upfront nowadays by charging more for them now for use on their DVDs?

Different publishers charge different fees for various songs...some are more expensive than others...it's highly possible StarVista couldn't afford some of these songs.

This episode was not shown by TBS, but was shown on ION. With the copy ION had, I think there were slight problems with the quality, as I recall. So if the syndication print was defective, TBS probably elected to just skip it.

It was reported today on TVShowsOnDVD.com that Star-Vista is going to release a Wonder Years DVD set, painstakingly seeing that virtually all original music is licensed (and with this show there was a LOT of original music...Beatles, etc.!), so that the series can be released as originally shown. Hey guys...why didn't you do that with Mama? If you can license the Beatles, surely you can clear Mama singing Harper Days are Here Again! Boy, I wish I had taped season 2 off TBS!

Just sharing that I got Season 1 from the library today!

One reason I believe the lost episodes exist is the because the episode titles sound like ones they would come up with. "Snow Job", "Play Ball!", "Wedding Presence", "Raytown Without Pity" and "Bubba's Photo Class" all sound like episode titles the writers would actually come up with. It's very common for them to use catchy titles, play on words, etc., which is what these are. The post on here from somebody who was describing an episode where it snowed sounds like it could be "Snow Job"

Before they released the DVDs, Time-Life was asked the question about the existence of these 5 phantom episodes; they checked with Warner and the Joe Hamilton estate and the answer they were given was that there are no missing episodes. I'm sure this won't change anyone's mind on this subject if they really want to believe they exist, but those are the facts.

It is not uncommon for TV shows to have scripted but unfilmed episodes. Those five episodes that you claim exist may have been scripted, but I doubt they were ever filmed.

I'm thankful to Time-Life for releasing the complete series set but in a way I wish Shout! Factory would've released it. I've noticed several songs that Time-Life couldn't secure the rights to, Shout! Factory has been able to in some of their recent sets.

I watched the 2 part Mama becoming mayor episodes on DVD, and the missing "Harper Days Are Here Again" really ruins it for me! They couldn't license that old music? Come on...that's 5 minutes of the first episode!

But there's nothing "new" in the preview; that brief footage is already in the syndicated cut. I thought from your post there was a sliver of the "lost" footage in the show.

I remember editing together the syndicated reruns of shows like Mary Tyler Moore and Designing Women with the cable versions, ala Nick at Nite and Lifetime, to get full episodes. It's possible to combine reruns and DVD footage, except most DVDs are copy protected.

Since it's the Star Vista/Time-Life version of the set, I'm guessing everything mentioned in this thread as far as music rights/missing scenes, etc. applies to the set I bought. Still I thought it was a good price so I thought I'd pass it along...

My only complaint is that in the episode "Mama In One" (season 5) the scene where Mama is on the porch with an umbrella singing "Singing In The Rain" has been cut out. All of the other episodes are in intact as far as I can see. Again, I'm wondering if that scene was cut because of the song.(copyright , royalties etc.)? But" Gert Rides Again" is included in the set. Now why would they cut out the above mentioned scene? It was funny and that is one of my favorite episodes because of the song scene.

The "Singing in the Rain" cut was indeed due to rights issues, as were the "Harper Days are Here Again" montage from "Mama for Mayor", and the "Ain't Misbehaving" number that Vicky Lawrence and Imogene Coca sing in "Aunt Gert". There are also about 7 other very minor cuts made in other episodes.

When the box sets first came out about five years ago, Time-Life gave a list of all the cuts made because they couldn't clear all of the 100+ pieces of music that were used in MF. Not sure if it's still listed on there web site.

Yes, I'm not a fan of the edits either especially considering MF is my all-time favorite show but I am still thankful Time Life released the show in some form.

The picture quality is top notch. My only other complaint is the music on the menus is extremely loud.

To me, the cuts in “Mama for Mayor” and “Mama in One” are the most disturbing. It still amazes me that Time-Life couldn’t get the rights to all the songs to make this an epic set. If WB/Warner Archive can release “Step by Step” completely intact, I’m not sure why a HUGE company like TL can’t do the same.

Hello, i know this is super old thread, but I'm hoping maybe someone will see it. I just found Mama's Family The Complete Collection on ebay new for less than $40. I just received it in the mail today and I'm wondering if it's counterfeit. This is the version with just the 6 individual seasons, no extras. But the Mama's Family logo on the front of the box looks kinda blurry. Does anyone have this set and can confirm if this is normal? I have't removed the shrinkwrap yet.

I can confirm that the set is legit from WB. It's rather cheap, and kind of sloppy. It spans 15 discs. Season 1 is literally a copy and paste of the 2006 release, while seasons 3-6 seem to be mastered from the same source as iTunes. My only complaint (aside from the horrible packaging) is that it does indeed seem like they've converted the original 30fps to 24fps resulting in some jittery motion.
