9 Foods You're Totally Eating Wrong

Sushi, chicken wings, even cupcakes. We all love them. And we're all eating them in the worst way possible.

Most of us are guilty of a stubborn mindset and and overwhelming desire to scarf down food the second it becomes visible. As a result, we never get to appreciate the full potential of what we're served. It's our loss.

Fortunately, YouTube has come to our rescue. Here are several videos that teach us the proper way to consume some of our absolute favorite foods.

1. Cupcakes

The right way to eat a cupcake is to remove the bottom layer, place it upside-down on the frosting, and creating a nice, mouth-friendly sandwich.

2. Bananas

The right way to peel a banana is to actually start from the other side.

The skin will cleanly and effortlessly peel right off, leaving you an intact fruit to enjoy.

3. Chicken Wings

The right way to eat a chicken wing is not to gnaw endlessly at the bone.

Instead, work the bone loose before eating. This leaves you with a boneless, bite-sized piece of meat that is still perfect for dipping.

4. Peas

The right way to eat peas is to first mash them down with a fork or spoon.

Their round, rollable shape now eliminated, you can scoop a nice hearty handful onto your utensil of choice.

5. Crabs

The right way to eat crabs is not by violently breaking them open with a mallet but by simply breaking it open. You will get the largest amount of meat this way.

Additionally, break off the claw portion of each crab leg, peel off the shell, and use the claw to dig out the maximum amount of leg meat.

6. Chinese Take-Out

The right way to eat Chinese take-out is to break down the box around the food, effectively transforming it into a properly sized plate.

7. Ketchup

The right way to use a ketchup cup is to tug on the cup's lip, effectively fanning it out into a far wider serving device—and thus affording you more ketchup.

8. Apples

The right way to eat apples is to actually start at the bottom and gradually work your way to the top.

In doing this, you get the absolute most for your money, ingesting everything—yes, even the core—and leaving behind nothing to clean up.

9. Sushi

The correct way to eat sushi could not be any further from the standard method. It's even made incorrectly!

Instead, you sit at the sushi bar, receive a bite-sized unwrapped bit of fish, and eat it with your fingers, applying sauces sparingly and using ginger as a palate cleanser.

Whenever you are eating a lobster don't forget to open the spot just behind it's head, it's a dice throw, but every now and then you'll find a bite-sized piece of meat there! :D

The ones I have been eating wrong all this time are 1 and 7. Although to be honest, whenever I have fries at my favorite fast food places, like In-N-Out for example, I always have multiple fries with them. As for 2, I always peel a banana from the largest point.

I seem to be getting better at eating Sushi whenever I eat at a Japanese restaurant with chop-sticks.

I went out for sushi tonight and I decided to investigate this by asking the chefs. There are two Japanese restaurants near me that I frequent.

One place has a staff of mostly younger people (20s-30s) and I asked the sushi chefs about eating it w/ your fingers. They looked at me like they never heard of it before and had to ask one of the other chefs. That guy told me that some people do eat sushi w/ their fingers, but that it is not traditional.

Ironically there was a guy eating sushi at the bar next to me who was eating it the way the guy in the YouTube video tells you not to eat it. He was using chopsticks and dunking it in the sauce and trying to put the whole thing in his mouth fast before it fell off.

The head sushi chef at the place 3 blocks away is an older man. He doesn't speak English so I had one of the servers translate my questions. He told me that eating sushi w/ your fingers is the traditional way to eat sushi in Japanese culture.

So it could be that younger Japanese-Americans who did not grow up in Japan don't know about their culture. The guy in the video said that even if Japanese people tell you otherwise that they are wrong.

Luckily for me, in all the Japanese restaurants I've went to here in the Los Angeles area, the chefs all spoke English.

I've even been to a teppanyaki several times. They're the best when it comes to Japanese cuisine.
