TV spinoffs offer ample evidence that original thinking is a rare trait among TV network executives. Whenever a TV series becomes a ratings success, it is almost inevitable that its parent network will try to create one or more spinoffs built around characters from the original series. The logic is that since the original series is a hit, the spinoffs will also be hits. It is flawed thinking at its best. This group of failed TV spinoffs offers proof that audiences are more inclined to embrace original shows rather than ones riding the coat tails of a more successful series that brought them into the world.

That's a pic from The Brady Girls Get Married, not The Bradys.

The show was The Brady Brides. The Lone Gunman could have been better.

There was a movie called The Brady Girls Get Married that came before The Brady Brides.

It lasted a full season.
And it was in the top 20 when it was canceled.

The Tortellis deserves a spot on the list.

I actually enjoyed the many Brady spin-offs.
I also thought The Ropers was a great show.

Yes, I purchased Brady Brides off of iOffer and thought it was so cute. Wish it lasted. I used to see reruns of The Ropers after Three's Company- they don't seem to do that anymore. Really, networks like Nick at Nite and TV Land should occasionally run spinoffs of series that were successful- there's plenty of us fans out there who would tune in to the nostalgia!
I forgot about Gloria and The Tortellis until now- I was practically a baby- but I'd sure like to see them now, having seen reruns of AITF and cheers.

The Ropers is definitely worth watching! The Brady Brides as well.

Anyway, despite what they claim, these guys offer "proof" of nothing. TV history is filled with many long-running and successful spinoffs...

Brady Brides get married was on today actually and it wasnt bad. The Brady Brides, from what I remember, was ok. I really didnt find Joey on Friends all that funny so it doesnt surprise me about his show Joey.

Btw, if you look on youtube, there were people that used to post videos of intros from different years. And there were A LOT of tv spinoffs, one hit wonders etc. on that list. I dont know if people still post videos of different tv intros from different years on youtube.

I didn't know The Brady Brides was on TV today!! Darn, I missed it!!

Joey was just plain unfunny. I gave it a try after Friends ended, but without the five other "Friends," the magic was gone.

I don't watch "Three's a Crowd," nor do I watch any of the episodes of TC with Vicky...actually I don't like series finales in general, but that's another story...lol. Anyway, I like to think of the roommates as still living together up to the same antics ever after and that Vicky or the spin-off never happened. Philip was okay...they just got married too soon and I wish we'd gotten a chance to know him better. Again, I still wish the show would've gone off into the sunset with the roommates actually still roommates lol. That's just my way of "pretending" it ended the way I wanted it to by avoiding the spin-off and not watching the last few TC episodes!!

Did we even like the Brady's? Their original show lasted five years but it never cracked the top thirty, and this was the early 1970's when there were only three networks. The show was also on Fridays. Probably what kept it going for so long was that it probably attracted a lot of young and teen viewers.

None of the other Brady shows lasted one season. The variety show was dreck. Then there were the other two Brady shows that did not last either, including a "dramedy".

For a culture who knows this show so well, we did not support it that much.

I was thinking of "The Brady Bunch" last night and the fact that it's still popular in reruns. The thing however is that "The Brady Bunch" has lasted this long is because of it's popularity with children who enjoy watching it after school.

The "Saved By The Bell: New Class" was considerably reasonable, especially when bringing Screech back for completing his teen popularity. I don't understand why it became messed up for no reason at all.

Good point, and one I've thought about myself. Vince Vaughn was in talks about making another reboot with Bobby's character being a divorced dad, who marries a divorced mom. Hope it sees the light of of day. Haven't heard anything about it recently.

True, amd this is where I started watching the show in reruns.

I once read that ABC had a early 1970's version of TGIF. I never knew this until now, but The Partridge Family came on after The Brady Bunch, then Room 222 (which I have never seen) The Odd Couple and the Love American Style. Pretty good lineup.

Last I heard any talk of it was last August. There were a couple press releases. I think if you go to IMDB's Brady Bunch page- they may have it listed under articles.
i haven't heard anything since last summer, but these things take time to be made. Hopefully, it will actually become a series! I'd watch, I'd be curious to see what those characters are up to in the 2000's!

What would they do about Mr. Brady? Also would Alice be a part of the cast in the new version?

The Brady Bunch was a show very much "of its time". We did love it, as children, at least, but it's really a case of not being able to capture lightning in a bottle twice. Once those kids (and we) had grown, something was lost forever.

That's one thing that came to mind as well. That would be difficult to address. :(

I wouldn't consider The Ropers or Joey to have failed terribly each ran two seasons. They weren't hits and they weren't bombs either.

I agree, spinoffs that last 1 or 2 seasons are not failures

Well, Sanford had 26 episodes and The Ropers had 28, so there's really not much difference there.

Television history is chock full of spin-offs that completely flunked.

Last month, we took a look at some of the best spin-off shows of all time (http://www.businessinsider.com/best-spinoff-shows-of-all-time-2013-11#saved-by-the-bell-1989-1993-1) — but let's face it, not all spinoffs are met with success.

After all, who can forget "Joey," the heavily promoted yet unsuccessful NBC show that followed Matt LeBlanc's character in a post-"Friends" world?

With networks gearing up for a bunch of new spinoffs, here are the shows that had a brief shelf life.
