View Full Version : That '90s Show?
tlc38tlc38 05-13-2013, 07:33 PM We all know that "That '70s Show" was a huge hit and "That '80s Show" was a huge flop. Just wanted to get people's thoughts on a parody show about the '90s and if you think it would float now or maybe in the next 10 years or so. To me, the '90s was an awesome decade for TV and a parody of it would be something that could work if it was done right.

tooltime1987 05-19-2013, 01:11 PM That 70s Show was a great show for 8 seasons (1998-2006). That 80s Show was on for one season (2001-2002). I hope Fox can plan on That 90s Show.

It doesn't have to actually air during the 1990s decade. What about the upcoming FOX comedy series Surviving Jack? That is set in the 1990s and airs during the 2010s decade.

A television show set in the '90s based on the 1996 Robin Williams movie?;)

I am looking forward to that show because I like Chris Meloni.

Why not...The Goldbergs seem to be a hit. It's all in the writing and casting.
MacLeaper 02-05-2014, 01:05 PM I don't always like all the period shows that seem to just exaggerate all the stereotypes associated with a decade. I suppose that a lot of shows tend to do this, but sometimes it seems like that's almost the main draw. Of course, a lot of period shows have done well with portraying the time period, including the historical fads of the time, without making it seem too much. I don't know about The Goldbergs- that one to me seems to just draw on the 1980s stereotypes for a lot of it- I suppose it will gradually continue to build on the characters and their relationships too because I think that's what generally drives a lot of good comedies. (And it helps make them timeless, despite being a period show.)
Hopefully, a show set in the 1990s could do this without just over-emphasizing all the stereotypical fads of the 1990s and such- though I don't mind some light teasing of some of the more stupid ones- like, say- pogs and Tamagotchis (and/or Gigapets) and that annoying dancing baby CGI.

Mace Dolex 02-05-2014, 07:27 PM I'd say wait another 5 years for a sitcom set in the 90's and the reason for it is that currently in syndication you have many 90's shows still airing (Friends, Family Matters, Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air, Full House, Step By Step, Seinfeld) so the nostalgia for it isn't in demand just yet.
ThomasE 02-07-2014, 01:34 AM Mace, that's what I've thinking in my mind. Good shot.
visaman666 02-07-2014, 05:04 AM It could be set in Seattle and they could call it Lollapalooza (fill in the year)
One of the characters could discover this weird thing called "Gopher" and join this cult like thing called a "Freenet" while working at Mircosoft, and having coffee at the Cafe Nervosa.

I don't think we should wait that long. It's currently 2014, and by then it'll be 2019.
For the past few decades, there were a few television series that were set two decades before their premiere/original airing.
M*A*S*H and Happy Days were set during the 1950s and premiered/aired during the 1970s.
The Wonder Years was set during the 1960s and premiered/aired during the 1980s
That '70s Show, of course, was set during the 1970s and premiered/aired during the 1990s, though most of its run was in the 2000s.
Everybody Hates Chris was set during the 1980s and premiered/aired during the 2000s.
Surviving Jack is set in the 1990s and is to air during the 2010s.
James28 10-02-2014, 04:49 PM Well, unfortunately, Surviving Jack had already been cancelled last May after one season of eight episodes.

MacLeaper 10-06-2014, 08:14 PM Just the other day I saw that VH1 was actually continuing its decades series and airing "I Love The 2000s". Wow! It's easy to forget sometimes that the first decade of the new millennium is already over and someone could technically be making "That 2000s Show" now.
(I notice that VH1 has yet to make "I Love The '60s" or "I Love the '50s" or "I Love the '40s" or "I Love the '30s" and "I Love the '20s" and "I Love the '10s" or "I Love the 1900s", etc.) That would be particularly interesting to me since those would cover a lot more history beyond just pop culture stuff. (Though true- there would be pop culture of those times to be explored. And that could go all the way back through time- "I Love the 1800s", "I Love the 1700s", "I Love the 1400s BC", "I Love the 30s AD", etc.)
[Of course, VH1 might not be the best channel for such shows- lol. )
But to get back on topic- I would like a show that's set in the 1990s to deal with more than just the cute fads of the day- the Tamagotchi/Gigapets, Pogs, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers, fashion, etc.
It would be good to deal with some really important historical events that went on too- like say, Iraq's invasion of Kuwait and Operation: Desert Storm, Hurricane Andrew, dissolution of the Soviet Union, China reacquiring Hong Kong, President Clinton's adulterous affair with Monica Lewinsky and subsequent perjury, Y2K, etc.
(Not that every episode has to be intense and dramatic- I realize the show would primarily be a sitcom- but even sitcoms should acknowledge real life events going on- at least period shows should- and give viewers a chance to see how the characters react to them and are affected by them.)
