I heard George mention it a couple of times in the later episodes. But I had a hard time believing that. George was straight up nasty and racist towards Tom and didn't treat him with any respect. Some best friend.

It's true that in the early seasons, George treated Tom pretty rotten and he called him some racist names. But in the later seasons, George realized that he was wrong and he truly respected Tom. They did become best friends later on. It was very obvious to me that they were good friends who relied on each other for a lot. It went both ways and it wasn't one sided.
