View Full Version : Your favorite one season series
Yong Fang 05-13-2013, 03:51 AM Which is your favorite series that was a "one and done".
My vote is the 2010 show "The Good Guys" (on FOX) with Bradley Whitford and Colin Hanks (son of Tom Hanks). Frankly, this show was funny as s**t. Whitford's character Dan Stark especially was absolutely hilarious in this.
It was basically the story of police partners who every week solve a different crime, usually with dimwitted, stupid, and usually funny bad guys with hilarious results. It was also filmed in and around Dallas, Texas, and they tried to get a feel of Dallas and of Texas in the show. It made the year, but I knew it was on the block, but I hated it going off.
I have read from a lot of people here that FOX's Back To You is another show that should have had a second season, and I agree. But, Patricia Heaton is on a better show in my opinion, and Ty Burrell is playing Phil on Modern Family (which is much better than the stuffy weather guy he was on Back To You).
From 1981, the ABC sitcom Best of The West. It was a show set in the old west with Joel Higgins (I think) playing a sheriff, with his son, and the weird townspeople. I was a kid when it was on, but I remember it being absolutely, screamingly hilarious. I guess I was the only one who thought so.

tlc38tlc38 05-13-2013, 02:43 PM There are tons of shows that fall in this category.
Just to name a few:
666 Park Avenue (2012) (the name killed this show)
Missing (2010) with Ashley Judd (the ending of season 1 left a lot to be desired and it could've went for at least one more season)
Aliens in the Family (1996) (just a fun family show. Reminds me of a combo of "Dinosaurs" and "The Neighbors".)
The Gates (2010) (I loved this show and hated that it ended after only 1 season especially the way it ended.)
Life on a Stick (2005) (I know it was cheesy but I love cheese.)
Thea (1993)
bookandfilmnut 05-13-2013, 03:54 PM I think my favorite American single season program would be Tales of the Gold Monkey from the early 80's.
A lot of good British shows were not produced for more than a single season, like The Prisoner, for example.

treky 05-13-2013, 11:37 PM "BRET MAVERICK" from NBC in 1980. It was a revival of the old ABC western "MAVERICK"from the late 50s-early 60s, but was just about Bret (played again by James Garner) in retirement and trying to live a quiet life in Sweetwater, Arizona. I read that a lot of people didn't like it, but I did. I thought it was a little bit like "THE ROCKFORD FILES" set in the old west. I remember Jack Kelly (Bart Maverick on "MAVERICK") made a cameo as Bart in the last scene of the last episode.
70s show watcher 05-14-2013, 12:37 AM I don't know if it is necessarily my favorite "one and done" series, but the first one that came to mind that I really enjoyed was the 2010/11 JoAnna Garcia/Jennifer Finnigan ABC sitcom, "Better With You".i really enjoyed that show too

Yong Fang 05-19-2013, 01:54 AM Does anyone remember "Twenty Good Years" with John Lithgow and Jeffrey Tambor? That show went off so fast that I never got a chance to see it. I cannot believe and really think it is an impossibility to have a show with both Lithgow and Tambor and have it suck.
Then there is "George and Leo" with Judd Hirsch and Bob Newhart. Again, how and why did this fail? This was another show that came and went before I had a chance to watch.
These are two short term series that I would like to see no matter how bad they are.
Mr. Drucker 05-20-2013, 09:26 AM I liked "George and Leo" very much.Always a big fan of Hirsch and of course the legendary Mr. Newhart.HAven't heard of that other one,but I like many of the things I've seen Jeffrey Tambor do,from his stint on the "Ropers" to the absolute sleazebags he played in both "Mr. Mom" and Mel Brooks' "Life Stinks".And of course, everyone here remembers his appearance as a rather lecherous reptilian expert on an episode of "New Adventures of Old Christine".Wonderful actor.

I remember it! It was paired with 30 Rock on Wednesdays at 8, but they both tanked. Then NBC moved 30 Rock to Thursdays to give it another chance and axed 20 Good Years.
You could try searching for it online somewhere, since it's a fairly recent show.

bencasey 07-18-2013, 10:59 AM Reading some of the shows listed makes me wonder if some people mistook the thread for a worst shows of all-time thread.
mr awesome 07-18-2013, 07:07 PM George and Leo - Bob Newhart and Judd Hirsch were a hoot together. My fave episode is the one where that guest starred a bunch of Bob and Judd's former cast-mates from their previous shows. The show should'e been renewed for a second year.
Payne - I didn't expect this show to last and it didn't, but it was good. It was the second American adaptation of 'Fawlty Towers' starring the once-great John Larroquette.
The Pursuit of Happiness - I didn't see too much of this show but it seemed good and looked great on paper. It was by some of the 'Frasier' people and had a similar quality and feel. I think the show had on-screen episode titles, as an answer to the scene titles on 'Frasier.'
