"24" Eyes Return as Limited Series On Fox, Howard Gordon To EP, Kiefer Sutherland In Talks To Star

The clock may start ticking again on Fox. I’ve learned that the network is looking to bring back its signature real-time drama "24" as a limited series.

Kiefer Sutherland is in talks to reprise his Emmy-winning role as Agent Jack Bauer. No deals are in place, but Fox is eying "24" as part of its recent push in limited event series.





Since "24" ended its eight-season run on Fox in 2010, there have been efforts to continue the story as a feature, which ultimately didn’t take off.

I hear the idea to do another "24" chapter on TV came from longtime "24" showrunner Howard Gordon, now executive producer on Showtime’s "Homeland". I hear he pitched the plan, which would start from scratch with a new story arc, to "24" producers 20th Century Fox TV and studio-based Imagine TV as well as Fox, which all jumped on board.

Gordon will likely executive produce through his 20th TV-based company Teakwood Lane.






Sutherland most recently starred on the Fox/20th TV drama "Touch", which is being cancelled after two seasons.

The original "24" was created by Joel Surnow and Bob Cochran, who executive produced with Gordon, Brian Grazer, Sutherland, Evan Katz and Tony Krantz.

At the 2006 Emmys, the show won five Emmys, including best drama series and best actor in a drama series for Sutherland.

This could either be very good or very bad.

In any case, I'll definitely watch any new "24" material should it ever happen.

Weren't they going to give 24 the big-screen treatment? Are there still plans to make a movie?

It's been "in the works" since 2011. The cast and producers want to do it, but Fox wouldn't officially sign off on it and get the budget together.

Then most of the cast got other projects and had to arrange it around their scheduling. I'm hopeful but doubtful about the movie happening.

With Kiefer Sutherland and Fox plotting the return of Jack Bauer, we’re hearing some additional details about the plan.

You already figured this out, but now we can say with certainty: "Touch" isn’t coming back for a third season. The mystical drama was shifted to Friday nights this season where it struggled in the ratings. Even without a "24" revival, it was considered pretty much dead in the water.





For the "24" miniseries/limited series, we’re hearing Fox is actually currently looking at a 13-episode order for the show. For a cable series, that’s actually a full season (heck, for HBO’s "Game of Thrones", it’s more than a full season).

So that would be a pretty significant potential order to bring back Bauer.

Fox had no comment. Hopefully there will be clarity at the network’s upfront presentation Monday.





Of course, a 13-episode order does raise the question: Will "24" continue in its real-time format, but just follow Bauer over the course of 13 hours? That would sort of botch the title, though, right?

Or will Bauer face another 24-hour adventure, but the narrative will skip time? It would be great to see Bauer get on L.A.’s 405 freeway at the end of one episode and arrive at his destination two hours later at the start of the next episode — now that would be realistic action!

"24" Reboot Eyes May 2014 Launch

Jack Bauer is back! I’ve learned that, after marathon negotiations, Kiefer Sutherland has closed a deal for a new installment of "24" on Fox. With him on board, I hear Fox has greenlighted the real-time drama as a limited series and will announce it during its upfront presentation today.

The continuation is a brain child of longtime "24" showrunner Howard Gordon, now executive producer of Showtime’s "Homeland". His 20th Century Fox TV-based Teakwood Lane will co-produce the new "24" alongside original series producers Imagine TV and 20th TV, with Imagine’s Brian Grazer returning as executive producer.

This will mark Fox’s second event series under the network’s push into that arena, joining the just-greenlighted M. Night Shyamalan’s "Wayward Pines" starring Matt Dillon.

The new 12-episode "24" event series, titled "24: Live Another Day", will likely launch in early May 2014 running into the summer, Fox‘s entertainment chairman Kevin Reilly said during an upfront conference call this morning.

The original idea to continue "24" was as a feature, which died after "24" showrunner Howard Gordon and his team concluded that "24 being compressed into two hours is not 24", Reilly said. But after Fox announced its event series push six months ago, Gordon sparked to the idea of resurrecting 24 that way.



The 12-hour version will keep the real-time nature of the original series, skipping some hours in the 24-hour period it covers. That would actually benefit the show, Reilly said, noting that "24" producers always felt that the spine of each season of "24" were 12 episodes containing major events, with the other 12 providing connective tissue.

“Now we’ll get the best part,” Reilly said. While Fox envisions its limited series as stand-alone, one-time events, some, including "24", could become franchises with multiple installments though it is unlikely to have a new "24" every year.
