It was real. He trimmed and thinned it out in later episodes.

He should have shaved it off completely fred makes jokes about throughout the series run.

Yeah,the moustache thing was pretty big in the '70's.Nowadays,it's this "Van Dyke",goatee and moustache thing or just sideburns.I was so accustomed to spotting facial hair on Demond Wilson,when I saw him on "The New Odd Couple" in 1982,I was a little surprised to see him without one.But then,Oscar Madison on film or tv was never "moustache guy".That is,of course,except for the time Felix hired him for some photography sessions and Oscar had to pose as Spanish conquistador!OLE!!

Looking back at it now, him and Ron Glass was an odd pairing.
