Do you think the character lamont could have made this show sanford and son last a few years longer if lets say the character fred sanford was written out of the show like fred and donna get married and they move to another state and they brought back grady to watch lamont, i thought some of the most classic episodes revolved around lamont and grady.

I don't think the show had a chance without Fred Sanford. After all, the show was called Sanford and Son.

Desmond Wilson did have the opportunity to take over the show when Redd Foxx quit. But he asked for more money than the producers were willing to pay him so he walked. So the producers made Grady the star and renamed the show Sanford Arms with Grady managing the boarding house next door to the junkyard.

Fred and Lamont are needed together, that's why the spin-offs were mediocre or a flop. One of the greatest partners in show biz, IMHO. :D

Grady and lamont seemed to have more chemistry then fred and lamont

because Lamont couldn't cook - he woulda starved there all by hisself

I don't think the show would have lasted without Fred.
And obviously Redd Foxx was the star.

But, whereas a lot of people didn't care for the episodes where Grady took over for the missing Fred, I liked them.

I just don't think an entire season of that would have worked though.

Sanford Arms was owned & managed by Phil Wheeler, played by Theodore Wilson, who converted the Sanford living room into a lobby for the hotel. Grady, Bubba, and Esther (from S&S) continued as characters in Sanford Arms.

There are Redd Foxx t-shirts available today. He (and his character) were that popular. The audience wanted Redd. Demond was great as the exasperated son but was not going to be able to carry that show. Also, Demond admits he was on drugs during much of the show's run and is alleged to have gotten hostile with Norman Lear which was a big "no-no" in the TV business.

Yeah i heard Demond wilason was on drugs for most of the sanford and son series i guess he was just doing the show to make quick cash which is what alot of actors nowadays are doing by being a celebrity.

In my opinion, the only way it would have worked with Demond Wilson without Redd Foxx is to have a funny second banana character playing off Demond Wilson. Not nessacarily a star, but a comic relief character.

The show could have made it a few years without the character fred, lamont was not that dull of a character on sanford and son they could have brought in some new people on the show that could be friends with lamont, people will watch anything as long as they are entertained for 30 minutes.
